Pre-Christmas freezer surprise dinner...

wellthatwasthat · 18/12/2019 16:26

Today I had to clear out the freezer to make space for the turkey.

Trouble is, that dinner for 4 adults this evening is:

2 individual pepperoni pizzas
Nine pigs in blankets left over from last Christmas
One beefburger
Two elderly part-baked baguettes
One Linda McCartney cheese and leek plait
One small bag of microwavable frozen rice

Please tell me I'm not alone in this madness Grin

Freezer Bingo here.....my peak was when no one could decide who wanted bolognese, chilli, mince or pork casserole and then someone suggested to put them all in together and have baked potatoes

Reader, it was bloody lovely!

I am ruthless about labelling since dh moaned for a week about taking what he thought was soup and it turned out to be beef gravy....even so I do have a tub of Unidentified Brown in there...so that'll be a nice surprise for someone.

I am very impressed that so many of you are able to actually identify the things in your freezer

The UFOs are in the bin.

I have a UFO that looks like it might be quite nice. I might be tempted to get it out tomorrow!

FusionChefGeoff · 18/12/2019 18:01

DH is due freezer harvest tonight and I've just had leftover bean chilli to make sure it didn't end up in the freezer!

My worst was when I was younger and at home and made my Dad a freezer dinner - rounded off with apple lattice and custard.

Except it was a cheese pasty EnvyGrin

wellthatwasthat · 18/12/2019 18:10

Fusion Ugh! Reminds me of the time MIL put mayonnaise on her apple crumble.

The TBS soup could charitably be described as dark orange with lumps. Still none the wiser. Dh has dug the snails out for tonight. He's on his own with those I think.

AdaColeman · 18/12/2019 18:49

Crown Smile I'm having risotto with prawns & courgette and ice cream with chocolate sauce tonight, to make room in the freezer. It's really too summery a meal on a night when the rain and sleet are lashing down!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 18/12/2019 18:53

I've just unearthed the last Doughnut Ice-Cream Sandwiches for my boys to eat after a curry supper from the freezer. Love freezer tapas!!

wellthatwasthat · 18/12/2019 19:00

@katmarie TBS = Tomato and Butternut Squash???

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/12/2019 19:16

Last night dh and I had a pre-Christmas-clearout UFO that turned out to be a lamb stew that must date from last winter.
I added quite a bit of curry powder and we had it with rice.
It was surprisingly OK.

Squirrelblanket · 18/12/2019 19:18

This has basically been us all week too!

wellthatwasthat · 18/12/2019 19:24

What worries me is that tonight's feast is the best of what was available.

The other thing that's worrying me is that dinner will be ready in 5 minutes and my entire family seems to have gone AWOL.

katmarie · 18/12/2019 19:39

Tomato and butternut squash soup sounds nice, but I've never made it so sadly not. Waiting for it to defrost in the microwave now to figure it out lol!

wellthatwasthat · 18/12/2019 20:16

Well I never.

DH said "Thanks, I enjoyed that, I like Hodge Podge".

Confused

Oh next time don’t throw away the UFOs! Half the fun is figuring out what to do with all the random bits once they’ve thawed out and you can identify them...

wellthatwasthat · 21/12/2019 15:38

Whatever the UFOs were, they'd been in there a long time and were freeze-dried lumps covered in ice crystals so I don't think they'd have been tasty...

OP posts:
Cineraria · 21/12/2019 15:50

TBS soup might be To Be Speculated soup, a dinner party guessing game.

wellthatwasthat · 28/10/2020 17:37

Time is getting on, and my freezer is full to bursting with odds and ends, so I'm bumping last year's thread in readiness for this year's onslaught of UFO's over the coming weeks...

I love the name freezer tapas and going to steal it from now on!

Iseeyoulookingatme · 29/10/2020 12:46

I'm doing the same but in preparation for a move and I have had some pretty interesting meals lol. We call them leftover meals and sometimes they are the best. I cant wait to go shopping for a few Christmas bits once I'm in the new house.
Good luck with your freezer emptying op.

Ninkanink · 29/10/2020 12:55

Heh I opened this thread all excited and realised i’d posted on it the first time around as well! Grin Grin

Sadly we don’t have any random things in our freezer (moved recently and we have strictly curated freezer contents now), so I won’t be joining you in cooking up lovely meals from various UFOs. Sad Sad

Spam88 · 29/10/2020 13:33

We've started the freezer clear out (I've already managed to fit my turkey crown in!) but there's a ways to go yet. We did bin some suspect looking meat, the origins of which were unknown.

My biggest challenge actually is just not creating more things to go in the freezer... we're having stew for tea today and it seems a waste only making two portions, so I've made loads and we'll just have to eat it for lunch until it runs out.

LindaEllen · 29/10/2020 14:07

I love doing this! We have quite a big freezer and I hate it when there are just certain things that get left lurking in there for ages, so I won't do another massive freezer restock until everything has gone. We'll gradually use up the things in there over the course of perhaps a month, then I'll decide that I'm doing the restock the week after and everything has to go .. so we will have some odd meals at that point! Not too odd as I'm quite good at freezer planning, but there are some interesting choices!

nightshade1 · 29/10/2020 14:49

We've just started the big freezer clear out- it desperately needs defrosting but is packed with UFO's tonight's offering is cod with what I hope is ratatouille (although could be minestrone soup)

InDreamland · 29/10/2020 15:53

Love this thread! Made me lol at the UFO.

I've got 2 packs of cocktail sausages (uncooked) which have been in my freezer for about 3 years I think. Chuck them or cook and eat?
