Pre-Christmas freezer surprise dinner...

wellthatwasthat · 18/12/2019 16:26

Today I had to clear out the freezer to make space for the turkey.

Trouble is, that dinner for 4 adults this evening is:

2 individual pepperoni pizzas
Nine pigs in blankets left over from last Christmas
One beefburger
Two elderly part-baked baguettes
One Linda McCartney cheese and leek plait
One small bag of microwavable frozen rice

Please tell me I'm not alone in this madness Grin

Definitely cook and eat. There’s no need to throw them out IMO.

ApplePlumPie · 29/10/2020 16:03

We are also on freezer teas this week in preparation for the Christmas stock up! We’ve had sausage casserole accompanied by onion rings, garlic mushrooms and spicy wedges, chicken in mushroom sauce with carrot and swede mash and meatballs in sauce (I forgot it was a spicey sauce !) and the obligatory chill and spag Bol. It’s pizzas and fishfingers and peas tonight and that’s us with a lovely cleared out freezer ready for payday!

InDreamland · 29/10/2020 16:26

@Ninkanink I am a little worried they'll be off now and not safe to eat. You reckon they're still safe?

Ninkanink · 29/10/2020 16:31

Yes I would eat them. I’m fairly relaxed about food in general and especially frozen food - it’s extremely unlikely they’ll be spoiled as far as safety is concerned. The quality will maybe have deteriorated a little but I’d at least cook them and see if I could do something with them. I hate food waste and would want to avoid throwing it out unless I was sure it wasn’t any good.

But I expect a lot of people would say to throw it out.

InDreamland · 29/10/2020 16:38

I'll chuck 'em in the oven tomorrow and see how they are. Last thing DH and I need though is food poisoning with an 8 month old to look after.

wellthatwasthat · 19/10/2021 16:49

Bumping the thread - 2021 edition!!

And so it begins again. Having thrown out several dodgy-looking articles that didn't bear further inspection, tonight we are having individual portions of lamb curry, chicken casserole, and a thing with tomatoes and beans in it which could, quite frankly, be anything. We will find out once it's defrosted. Confused

Haha we call it freezer tapas in this house too. I've just peered in the freezer and I have two spinach and goats cheese lattices, a pack of fruit scones and various UFOs from meals I've made but not bothered to label!

Christmas1988 · 19/10/2021 19:20

I had three McCain smiles for my lunch, my youngest had the last few peas with his sandwich 😂

MeatyRvita · 19/10/2021 19:39

We did this last week, we had 4 fish fingers, a small bag of Mediterranean vegetables with rice, 2 Linda McCartney mozzarella burgers and some chicken dippers and then I did a can of baked beans too. It was random but I’ve now emptied it out and have room for my lamb and other Christmas bits!

Cindi85 · 19/10/2021 19:44

I really need to do this, you have inspired me. Want to get my turkey on pay day.

didireallysaythat · 19/10/2021 20:31

I got what I thought was chilli out of the freezer. Made the rice to go with it. Turned out to be stewed rhubarb.....

Squirrelblanket · 19/10/2021 20:36

I'm on it again too! This week we've used up the fries, bagels, lentil dahl and a beef and red wine stew. In the next week we're working through the frozen soup stash, the bags of frozen fruit and the curries. (Not all together😂)

Mojoj · 19/10/2021 20:40

Ha ha we do this whenever the freezer needs a clearout. Kids love it as it's usually all the food they like!

My freezer is full of frozen vegetables and blackberries. I should rectify that Grin

MrsMiddleMother · 21/10/2021 21:25

Yes currently on this mission! Luckily no weird concoctions yet but really need to defrost the freezer before we stock up for Christmas (and new baby) so using up what we have

wellthatwasthat · 21/12/2022 19:48

Hello everybody, here we are again, delving into the freezer and coming up with unlikely dinners. Grin

Tonight for 2 it was:

One portion of chicken tikka masala I made about 6 months ago
One chicken Kyiv
A random collection of three different sorts of chips
Some slightly shrivelled sweetcorn

I'm going to have to delve again tomorrow I think, the freezer is full of random nonsense and there's no room for festive treats.

What's your freezer like - a picture of organised excellence, or a frosty skip?

Freezer cleaner dinner, we regularly have these.

wellthatwasthat · 21/12/2022 21:34

I know we have at least a pound of blackberries in there, not sure what I could do with all of those at short notice.

Ours is a model of chaos theory in frozen action.

Frozen finds this week I've managed :

  • salmon ends turned into with packet sauce and spaghetti
  • 3 skimmed rock salmon - shallow fried and eaten with celeriac mash and Fri random sauerkraut
  • battered scallops and chips, which also used up fridge mushrooms and a leek!

I have got the goose in, and will use a big bag of frozen cherries in Christmas day trifle.

I have a couple of UFOs, they may end up as my lunch at work.

Also some hard to use....got a goat curry for two, but it was flipping HOT when I made it, so not sure how to rescue it after 11 months of freezer time.

Best of luck to all freezer warriors!

wellthatwasthat · 26/11/2023 10:36

It's that time of year again folks, so here we are once more.😂

I've got ahead of myself this year and the freezer is half-empty - what about yours?

OP posts:
BiddyPop · 26/11/2023 11:13

DH has the pleasure this year (I was trying to get it sorted before I left but...)

It got harder as we were back in the habit of eating together and not being out on different nights (which meant I would use up single portions of leftovers very regularly).

But he is also happy to have weird and wonderful combinations. - but does draw the line at "useful" things, I get questions like "what do I use stock for, should I just throw it out?".
