DD has just turned 12, moved up to High School this year. She’s developmentally delayed with learning disabilities but is desperate to be like her peers and has asked for ‘things that 12 year olds want’

She has asked for a bean bag and a new iPad case but nothing else.

She doesn’t like / can’t sit still to do puzzles or craft activities, likes some family games but nothing that involves doing something against the clock. She loves films but we already have Netflix etc.

I’m so stuck! Would be very grateful for any ideas.

My 12 yr old is getting stuff to do with her hobby horse riding. Does she have a hobby at all? Also she is getting Vans trainers (yellow!), GHD straightners, some sports gear from JD sports, Toiletries, books about horses, she also likes Friends & Stranger things so picked her some bits from Amazon. I still get her a board game - Stranger Things Monopoly. Also jammies, housecoat slippers etc. What about tech would she like a fit bit , watch or something like that? Games? that kind of thing x

Howmanysleepsnow · 04/12/2019 14:27

Does she have an Alexa?
Alternatively, my dd and her friends are doing secret Santa and all seem to want bath bombs, BTS merchandise, face masks and in some cases makeup. BTS are the big thing in her year!

artisanparsnips · 04/12/2019 14:29

Exploding Kittens is a funky but not against the clock card game that DD who is 13 still likes.

SweetAsSpice · 04/12/2019 14:33

Bath bombs/Luxury bath goodies. They start taking more of an interest in treatin’ yo’ self at this age.

Although you say you have Netflix, is there a particular genre etc she is interested in? Perhaps find a ‘new’ film/series she’s not seen before and get her that?

iwantavuvezela · 04/12/2019 14:35

Would clothes work - my DD and friends seem very taken with brandy Melville or a hoodie (nypd seems popular!)

I am getting dd a bubble tea box so she can make her own as she loves

Earphones to listen to music on phone

Body shop stuff - lip balms

Friends themed gifts

converseandjeans · 04/12/2019 14:37

Nice toiletries
PJs or onesie
Fluffy socks
Converse/Vans
Rucksack/backpack
Cinema vouchers
Sharpies/nice stationery
Light box thing where you put words in
Drone
Clothes or nice hoody

BabbleBee · 04/12/2019 16:35

Some good ideas, thank you.

She loves horses, so anything with that theme is great but what I’ve seen so far is all pink glittery unicorns rather than horses so I’ll keep trying.

I forgot to say, she’s only just recently had a birthday... we got her wireless headphones and a LOT of Simple face care products, and a couple of bits of natural collection make up.

PJs - always a winner, and the trainers like Vans is a great idea for a girl who wants to fit in.

Thanks all!

Nail varnish
Overnight bag

Lava lamp and fairy lights for bedroom
Chilly’s water bottle
Cookery book
Instax camera

Ricekrispie22 · 04/12/2019 17:16

BabbleBee · 04/12/2019 17:20

Oh the camera is a brilliant idea. We give her ours when she’s feeling really anxious about being somewhere and looking at it through a lens helps that.... I’m off to search!!

Does she have her ears pierced? Getting her seconds done would be considered "cool"?

New phone case? My dd has used Casetify throughout secondary school which is practical and stylish. But watch out for customs charges as they come from overseas.

BabbleBee · 04/12/2019 19:01

Ears not pierced (never will be - sensory issues prevent) shame as she’d love to be sparkly!

Horse phone case was for her birthday but I might get another so she can swap them about.

Thanks so much, I was really overthinking it!

My dd got a breville waffle maker last year when she was 12 and it was a big hit. And we've been having waffles for breakfast that she's proudly made for a year.

AnneOfCleavage · 04/12/2019 19:14

My DD loves her HP Sprocket - gadget that prints out pics from your phone on zink paper (zero ink). They've been very popular with the pre-teens and teens. Friends get an instant pic which they can put behind their clear phone cases.

We've got a stranger things poster for DD's bedroom wall - £3.99 from HMV so when she's bored of it she can change it without me feeling it's a waste of money (just a waste of paper 😕).

Also how about a funky bag for going out, or a purse.

tinyvulture · 04/12/2019 19:54

The girls that age I teach love Tyebo (tie-dye kit) - and my dd loves it too age 7, so it might be something your daughter could do?
Fun makeup like scented nail varnish? Nice necklace? Stationary bits? The girls I teach love all that......

tinyvulture · 04/12/2019 19:55

Oh, had missed she doesn’t like craft. It’s not like normal craft tho - it’s fucking quick and easy.

PositiveLife · 04/12/2019 19:57

I've got my 12 year old a heated blanket that she can snuggle under while watching netflix, a notebook, some leggings, some gym stuff, bath stuff and perfume

gerbo · 04/12/2019 20:09

My dd, 12, is getting an Instax Polaroid camera, dressing gown, books, few crafty bits (decoupage, pens), perfume, Harry Potter socks, HPotter notebook, chocolate and sweetie bits and bobs. Also clothes from grandparents.

BabbleBee · 04/12/2019 20:28

Heated blanket is genius, that is so her!

Like the Sprocket idea, will look at that too. I’m going to end up with too much choice aren’t I?! Grin

Sprocket and paper ordered, that wins the day!

Plenty of other ideas for little bits too, thank you all so much. Nest of vipers...

Have a similar age DC so following with interest. Currently looking at headphones and a board game but like the sprocket idea

Pinkbonbon · 05/12/2019 00:43

Is she into any actors/boy bands ect? If so then some posters of cute fellas maybe? Even better if you can get them signed.

Does she play video games at all?

Cute handbags maybe?

Slinkymalinky1 · 05/12/2019 01:08

My 10 yr old is getting a sprocket, baking stuff, charm for her charm bracelet and trainers. Got her stocking bits as well, including diary, calligraphy set, book, craft/stationery bits etc

Slinkymalinky1 · 05/12/2019 01:09

Just added heated blanket to the list Grin
