What can I get my dog mad nearly 6yo? She wants a dog...but that's not happening. I thought a dog robot maybe?? She has dog soft toys galore... Help!

this?

Booboostwo · 02/12/2019 21:33

Tickets to Cruft’s?

Some dog training clubs have getting to know dogs classes for people who don’t have dogs but want yo learn more about their body language and behaviour as well as people who want to get over their fear of dogs. Might that be fun?

A year long commitment to volunteer at the local shelter to take dogs for a walk (confirm with the shelter first that they would be OK for a young child to be involved in this)?

Sponsorship of a dog at a rescue/charity?

Thebookswereherfriends · 02/12/2019 21:34

Have a look at Furreal Ricky- I’ve just bought one for my dd. I imagine it might satisfy a dog mad child.

Booboostwo · 02/12/2019 21:36

WTF Fake? That poor dog has a serious thyroid condition that will need medication for life and has dangerous complications.

Fakeflowersaremynewnormal · 02/12/2019 21:41

Ok maybe a full size German Shepherd puppy would be more ethical.

Bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 02/12/2019 21:43

What about accessories for dog teddies- carry case, basket, dog toy, poo bags etc. My niece is obsessed with dogs and she has tons of stuff for a dog- even a ball thrower thing! No actual dog!!
Vet set?
Playmobil have some animal/vet sets if she is into that? Or sylvanian families dog family with a house? Our generation dolls have a doll with dog and accessories? Or Barbie I think has a vet/dog walker set if she is into those.

Misty9 · 02/12/2019 22:00

Fake Shock Grin no, we're not getting an actual dog as I'm not home during the day. And we rent at the moment.

I've considered the furreal toys before... But she's asked santa for a dog with puppies in its tummy Hmm so that's probably too similar (they get one present and a stocking from santa).

Accessories for her existing dogs is a good shout. I'll definitely get some collars etc for her stocking. I just need a big present as her brother is getting a kano build your own computer...

She has a vet set and never that bothered about playmobil or small world play it seems. She can spend hours pretending with whatever is to hand. It's amazing, but makes buying stuff for her a bit tricky!

Not something you can open, but adults who volunteer at animal shelters to walk dogs can take children with them (we do this) or you could sign up with Borrow My Doggy?

DamsonOnThisDress · 02/12/2019 22:04

A Build a Bear dog. You can get all manner of outfits, leads, dog bowls, kennels. Lots of accessories.

A vet role play set and dress up.

Sponsor a dog at a rescue. Most send you a photo and updates of your sponsored dog. My daughter loved this when she was younger.

A children's book about dogs/encyclopedia of dogs.

A Barbie (or similar) vet or dog grooming playset.

Charm bracelet with paw print / dog charms, dog themed kids dvds.

Not a substitute for the real thing I know but hey...good luck!

SouthWestmom · 02/12/2019 22:05

Sponsor a guide dog? I'm doing this for one of mine. You get pupdates etc

Misty9 · 02/12/2019 22:13

I like the sponsor a guide dog.... I signed up to borrow my doggy but nobody wants a 5 year old to walk their dog it seems (with me obviously). I might pursue that a bit more though. Build a bear dog...interesting. Does that mean I have to go into that shop though?! Shock Grin

I've looked at the furreal dog. It's freaky!

You can get build a bear online! They have a pet type one which has the stance of a dog rather than a teddy and you can get accessories. My dd is still obsessed with her build a bear (rabbit) the she got 2 years ago. You can personalise a birth certificate with a name and dob (Same as dds) and it says from santa! She loves it!!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 02/12/2019 22:38

My dd was the same at 5yo, she has had to wait until she was 13yo before she finally got a real one!!

She had a build a bear bull dog called buster when she was younger that she absolutely loved, it came with a few accessories and a proper collar and lead.

Misty9 · 02/12/2019 22:43

I've had a look at the build a bear dogs, there's a beagle she might like but they're a bit of an odd shape and she's not interested in dressing them up or anything, more treating them like real dogs. I think I'll have to go to a big toy shop and just see what there is. I have no idea where I'm going to get a dog with puppies inside it either! That's OK though as according to dd, santa makes all the toys that the shops don't sell... that bloody man

This might work?

Dog mad 5yo
Misty9 · 02/12/2019 22:49

Thank you! God it's hideous though isn't it?! She'll love it...

There are toys that look just like a sleeping dog. Precious Pets I think? They “breathe” and make slight snoring noises but nothing else. Very realistic, much more than any child aimed toy, they’re really intended for elderly people who can’t have a real pet I think?

minipie · 02/12/2019 22:55

precious petzzz

I was tempted to get one for similarly dog mad DDs but we are going to get cats instead... (I’m a cat person)

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 02/12/2019 22:56

Both Steiff and Hansa make beautiful realistic looking stuffed toys. Hansa are a lot cheaper than Steiff but look gorgeous.

camelandsushi · 02/12/2019 23:01

The size always made a huge difference to me, ok I may have been older than 6 but a tiny realistic lab wouldn't cut it. I need a big lab or a realistic chihuahua.

Misty9 · 02/12/2019 23:03

I do feel bad that she can't have a pet. We were supposed to be moving into our own house and getting a cat (I prefer them) but it fell through Sad

I saw those dementia pets when I was looking the other day. That might be an option although the breathing bit sounded a bit freaky! I might do a bundle of dog bed, bowl, collars and some dog jewellery or something. Poor kid!
