Plan on buy one for my children at Christmas. Three children age 11, 12 and 14. I want games they can all play together and know nothing about games consoles, we've never had one before. Where best to buy, what to buy and which games would people recommend?
Thanks in advance.

The only game my 3 play together is Mario Kart, it’s a great game - make sure you buy an extra set of controllers.

Doobydoo · 18/11/2019 18:51

Look on Nintendos website for game ideas. DS12 likes Mario ones and Donkey Kong and a cooking ine which is rather good fun..I play that with him.

Nix32 · 18/11/2019 18:52

My two play minecraft together. Definitely get extra controllers.

feelingsinister · 18/11/2019 19:01

Donkey Kong is two player and really good fun but also one of the most frustrating games I've ever played.

MarioKart is a brilliant multiplayer game.

I've heard good things about Breath of the Wild if they're into fantasy games.

Super Mario Odyssey is amazing, I love it.

Thanks

If it says on the game multiple players online, I'm guessing that also means three can play together in the livingroom?

There are early Black Friday deals running at Currys at the moment - they're currently selling it as a package deal with Pokemon Sword which would probably suit their age range.

I love Breath of the Wild but would be impressed if they could get through it at their age, especially the youngest.

Agree Mario Kart 8 is easily the best game to play as a group.

crustycrab · 18/11/2019 19:50

@Nix32 for them to play minecraft together as a two player do I need an extra set of controllers?

StudentHelp · 18/11/2019 19:53

I'd recommend Mario party, Mario kart, New super mario bros U deluxe

KenDodd · 18/11/2019 19:54

With Pokemon Sword do they need the extra set of controllers? So that three of them would be playing, each holding a control or do they play one at a time, passing the control between them?

It comes with 2 controllers so 2 players can play.

You'll need to get an extra set of controllers (about €85, so will be a bit less in £) for all 3 to play.

Not all games will work for 3 eg my 2 boys play FIFA all the time, so that's 2 only.

But this year they've asked for extra controllers so they can play other games with 3 or more eg Mario.

EarringsandLipstick · 18/11/2019 19:56

@KenDodd

I don't know about Pokemon but they each need a controller. Not passing between them.

Of course at other times just one person can play, if they want.

EarringsandLipstick · 18/11/2019 19:58

@KenDodd the link you posted is what you get when you buy it. So 2 controllers come as standard.

For all 3 to play selected games together you need to buy 2 more controllers. Definitely worth it. I've 3 kids too. And for play dates etc

KenDodd · 18/11/2019 20:01

Thank you.

So if I get the package of the console, set of extra controllers (so I would have four controls in total) plus one game, Pokemon Sword, that would all work? Is one game enough? Should I buy more games?

YES to all the Mario games - Mario Kart/Mario Party especially are great multiplayers for up to 4. Breath of the Wild is a great solo game.

4 "half" controllers will be fine but you might want to eventually invest in more, as 2 "halves" can come together to make 1 full controller when they slot into a little plastic thing - I find that much easier to use. i.ebayimg.com/images/g/1OoAAOSwjXNa8r9m/s-l300.jpg

goodwinter · 18/11/2019 20:12

I haven't played Pokemon Sword OP but I've googled and the main game is single player only, although there does seem to be mini-game options for multiplayer. If you're looking for a party game you can play as a family - Mario Kart or Party as above! But the Pokemon games are consistently great as a single-player option, if your kids are into Pokemon.

goodwinter · 18/11/2019 20:13

No, online means connecting with other people who have Switches. You want to look for "local multiplayer" :)

KenDodd · 18/11/2019 20:14

Right, thank you. I might just get the four 'half' controllers for now as it's adding up to quite a lot already. The Pokemon Sword game seems to be thrown in as part of the package. Anyone think the price might come down a bit before Christmas?

BarbedBloom · 18/11/2019 20:16

What good winter said. You need local coop or multiplayer as some games can only be played online with other switch owners

KenDodd · 18/11/2019 20:17

goodwinter thanks.

Hmm, maybe I need to get something other than Pokemon then. The last thing I want is a great big argument on Christmas day over who's playing with it.

Littlebelina · 18/11/2019 20:18

Some games require both controllers for a single player (I think Minecraft is one but not sure. Supersmash bros does) so extra controllers are essential if you want to multiplayer on those. Mario cart is a great multiplayer game and you only need one of the "half" controllers per person. Would recommend you get at least two games to start incase they don't like one.

BarbedBloom · 18/11/2019 20:20

Just looked online and it says Pokemon Sword only has online multiplayer, no local multiplayer, just so you know. I am looking for one too at the moment but may wait for next week as I got a good deal on PS4 VR on Amazon last year

Littlebelina · 18/11/2019 20:20

Pokémon let's go (last year's Pokémon game) can be played with two players. Look out for black Friday deals, Amazon sometimes do a bundle with a couple of games.

ALemonyPea · 18/11/2019 20:21

You get two half controllers with any switch, you need an extra set if there are more than two players.

Mario and sonic Olympics 2020 is a good multi player game.

emmxO · 18/11/2019 20:22

Personally think you should get mario kart or party it's a fantastic family game!
