Lighthearted thread, as I’m sure everyone is grateful for any gift they receive.

Just with Christmas coming up I’m wondering which gifts you are dreading getting (but know you’ll probably get)

Mine are the Lynx women gifts sets (hate it but seem to get it every year!)
Any Poundland creams as they seem to make my skin itchy and red
Anything Bayliss & Harding (I know there is another thread about that)
Cheap perfume that smells like paint stripper
Obvious second had gifts that the giver didn’t want for themselves (it’s usually something totally unrelated to the things you’re interested in)

One year my friend got me some unwrapped Poundland glitter body spray, not sure why as I’ve never worn the stuff and it was clear that it was in the back of her wardrobe from a while ago

Bath and body sets, never ever use them. Might use bubble bath twice a year, never use body creams.
Jumpers - every year i get at least 1, i have loads and i don't like wearing them so i offer some to my mum, same with the bath sets.
Decorative scarfs - again have loads.
Ornaments - people keep buying my 3 year old little ornaments, why?! They are put up high away from little hands that could break them.

Love the scented candles though :-)

timeforawine · 05/11/2019 15:21

Feel free to send mint chocs and chocolate oranges my way :-D

SapphireSeptember · 05/11/2019 15:22

Cheap and nasty make up sets that I will never use. Yes I know it's huge and cost £20, but I could buy something I actually like and will use for that (you can even buy some Revolution gift sets for that.) But it's not Revolution, it's something like Tecnic, which is shite. Make up is rather personal, so just give me the moolah (which is what my mum does.)

Agree RE toiletries gift sets. They ALWAYS have body lotion, which I never use, or the kind of handcream that's like actual cream and not the good stuff (like Nivea hand cream which I love.)

CoffeeChocolateWine · 05/11/2019 15:35

I’m another who doesn’t like gift sets of toiletries. I don’t use them. They just live in my bathroom cabinet not being used.
Same with bubble bath. I don’t really have baths often so it doesn’t get too used.
Scarves. I just have too many of them where my Mum basically can’t think what to get me so thinks a scarf is a safe bet. She does this EVERY YEAR. And one year I got three scarves...all from my Mum because she’d forgotten she’d already bought a scarf! We had quite a laugh about it on Christmas Day though!
Last Christmas the Mum of a girl I tutor asked me what I drink, to which I said I enjoyed wine. Red or white, she asked. I said either really. I prefer white, DH prefers red, but we both drink either. So she bought me a bottle of rose as if this was a compromise between the two! Neither of us drink rose so it’s still in our wine rack!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 05/11/2019 15:44

Ferraro Rocher. Work of the devil, ruins two perfectly good individual ingredients by combining them.

StarlingsInSummer · 05/11/2019 15:48

Any kind of toiletries (except from my MIL as she always gets me stuff she knows I use).
Charity goats/chickens.
Wine/prosecco.
Clothes.
Scarves/gloves.

thegreatestgiftthatipossess · 05/11/2019 15:53

I'm in the minority! I like scented candles, toiletries and food because they can be used up. I don't want stuff cluttering up my house. I find it depressing opening up a present and finding it's a thing that I have to keep and can't use up within a few weeks.

KitKat1985 · 05/11/2019 15:56

Bath sets (I never get time to bath, I only ever really shower, so it either ends up cluttering up the house or being regifted).
Chocolate (usually ends up being given away in my January health kick).
Scarfs (nothing wrong with them per se, but honest to God I get 1-2 every Christmas and I've literally now got a box full of them).

shumway · 05/11/2019 16:02

I'm impossible to buy for because I'm a miseryguts who hates everything. I always say thank you though.

OverthinkingThis · 05/11/2019 16:03

Toiletry sets as they're very impersonal.

Lovemusic33 · 05/11/2019 16:07

I don’t like getting toiletries, I love smelly things but I have sensitive skin so can’t use most products.

Don’t mind the female lynx as I use the spray (but not the shower gel).

I don’t like food gifts as I’m often dieting and don’t want loads of food hanging around until mid January, the exception being hotel chocolate 😁

HappyDinosaur · 05/11/2019 16:09

Wine, I don't drink and never have so it's sort of a nothing present for me.

StarlingsInSummer · 05/11/2019 16:20

Every year I get a can of coke off my mum. When I was little this was a real treat as it wasn't so widely available as it is now. But 50 years on it is a bit weird.

Ah, I think this is really sweet!

NerrSnerr · 05/11/2019 16:22

I like toiletries, candles, alcohol and food because they get used (I don't have sensitive skin though). I'm not keen on scarves as I now have loads (I have spent a number of years breastfeeding so people have been very thoughtful thinking I may use them as a cover). I also find it hard to use experience days, especially 'couple' ones as we don't have anyone to do childcare so a babysitter would be as much as the experience!

iklboo · 05/11/2019 16:23

Bath sets - I hate baths
Umbrellas - never use them
Hat / scarf sets - I'm fussy about the style
Rose wine - can't stand the stuff
Praline chocolates - bleurgh

Lsquiggles · 05/11/2019 16:23

My SIL regifted me something I bought her for her birthday then made a big song and dance about how much effort she'd put in getting it for me... Blush

Barbarara · 05/11/2019 16:24

@Time40 good question. It made me realise just how controlling and overbearing some of my relatives are. Thank you for the head wobble.

Northernsoullover · 05/11/2019 16:24

I love toiletry sets Blush unless its Dove. I don't drink anymore but when I did I used to hate those sets with the teeny bottle of wine and a glass. You could buy a whole bottle for six quid!

MamaWeasel · 05/11/2019 16:26

Alcohol, ornaments/china/glasses. All toiletries go straight to the local women's refuge so they are welcomed! Clothes that i haven't chosen. Novels.

ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave · 05/11/2019 16:38

I get what you mean about "sets" but I love to receive something nice in the "smelly" category. I get very sad if I get nothing smelly at all for xmas. Body scrubs are, however, the most useless things I have had in the past, always get passed to school for their Secret Santa stall, so some other poor parent gets them from their DC Grin.

Also love a candle, and hampers, although I do still have a xmas pudding in the cupboard from last year, we got three !

What I get sad about is the amount of alcohol we have always been gifted. DH is very happy, me less so, I don't drink, and everyone knows I don't drink, but they still often get us a selection of alcohol. Great. DH passes the cheap stuff to me for cooking Hmm.

I particularly dislike/am pissed off about:
A Saucepan Stand from some crap craft fair
Table Mats from some other crap craft fair
Jewellery which looks like turds on chains, you guessed it, from another crap craft fair
Tea Towels, Toilet Towels, with xmas trees on
Charity Gift Cards

All of which I get every bloody year from my SIL's. EVERY YEAR!!!!!!

Leflic · 05/11/2019 16:44

I love wine, chocolate and bubble bath. Definitely get used however cheap.

Not keen on socks. They have to be cotton and the right thickness. Anything else sets my teeth on edge.
Calendars without room to write on.
Vouchers. I get stressed about using them, checking the balance etc.
Anything with Christmas on. Usually too late to be of any use on the actual day.A week later it’s January and I’m counting days to spring.

wildhairdontcare · 05/11/2019 16:46

Perfume- it's a personal thing/my tastes have changed in 25yrs mum!

Anything boots 3for2.

Nail polish. I have a manicure every two weeks and have done since 2002.

PumpkinKing · 05/11/2019 16:50

Toiletries. I have really sensitive skin so they're wasted on me.

Mugs. DP seems to get me mugs all the time! They're always to do with something I love eg cats, so I get the thought behind it, but I have no more cupboard space for mugs!

Hats/scarves. I only like particular styles and colours.

And yes to anything regifted. I have a summer birthday, and a friend who I didn't hear from on the day made a big deal in front of people a week later about some gifts she'd got me. I opened it when I got home and it was a toiletries bag without the toiletries it would have come with and a Christmas-themed planner for that year that we were already half way through Hmm

Stressystressstress · 05/11/2019 16:53

Bath stuff. Especially ones with moisturiser as I can’t use it.

I don’t really like stuff anymore. It’s bad for the planet and I’ve only got a small house. I have no room for anything.

I’d rather get something useful (I need more sauce pans!) or something edible or a meal voucher

Gingerkittykat · 05/11/2019 17:01

Another vote for Bayliss and Harding, they sell the stuff individually in Poundland then add on a huge premium to sell their crap in supermarkets.

Chocolates of any description, I'm diabetic and have told people not to buy me them but they still arrive.

The cat shaped tea pot I got last year. I hate tea and don't need more crap cluttering my house up.

I'm awkward to buy for, just get me Lush goodies or look on my Amazon wishlist for loads of cheap and cheerful ideas.
