Stained Glass Biscuit

Has anyone made these successfully? I mean the ones where you cut out a hole in the middle of the biscuit, fill hole with crushed boiled sweets and bake. Then you hang them on the tree where they are much admired.

I had a go last year, but DH has kindly reminded me that I said "Never again" .

Fiddly to make, the crushed sweets melted unevenly, and not much admiration.

Any hints other than 'Don't bother" ?

I made them once years ago. They were not a success, if I make biscuits now I make ginger bread ones.

I've made them a few times. They look amazing but i hate how sticky the stained glass is on your teeth. My kids are too small for them still as I think I'd want to take them straight to a dental hygienist after Xmas Wink

Made some today! Tunnock’s recipe, Lucysmam’s advice on adding crushed sweets a few minutes into the bake. Thanks!

Tried a few on the tree then removed them for keeping until nearer Christmas.
Very erratic icing but ok at a distance.

TrickyD, they look pretty! I should invest in a big-ish star cutter I think before next Christmas comes around.

Made another batch following the tips from all the lovely bakers on this thread and getting inspiration on the icing from TrickyD. They look great on my rosemary tree and my five year old niece is suitably impressed Grin. Ran out of sweets so made some snowflakes as well.

Sorry if this has already been said (I've only read to the gorgeous pictures on page 2) - we used the sugar free boiled sweets at the till in Aldi!! Only because we couldn't find any others. We also went to Poundland and found a bag there. We crushed the sweets - that was the hardest bit actually. They turned out fine.

Candles, I am in awe of your brilliant icing technique! I especially like the large inner stars.

Mumdiva99 we used Poundland Glacier fruits full sugar sort, as it was mentioned upthread that sugar free might not melt properly, but you have disproved this theory.

Moving on now to the annual marzipan fruits creation.
