Stained Glass Biscuit

Has anyone made these successfully? I mean the ones where you cut out a hole in the middle of the biscuit, fill hole with crushed boiled sweets and bake. Then you hang them on the tree where they are much admired.

I had a go last year, but DH has kindly reminded me that I said "Never again" .

Fiddly to make, the crushed sweets melted unevenly, and not much admiration.

Any hints other than 'Don't bother" ?

Reporting back, with a special message from OH who did all the driving because my left hand is having a ridiculous arthritic episode:

HOW HARD CAN IT BLOODY BE TO FIND BOILED SWEETS??!

We tried Aldi, Lidl, HB, Iceland, Asda, and I vaguely remember being in Tesco at one point; although I picked up a bottle of white rum at Aldi and cans of Ting at Asda, so all was not lost Grin

Anyway I ended up with a packet of Foxes Glacier Fruits at around 3pm today. They're in the fruit bowl.

We live the high life here.

Disclaimer: we did actually buy and eat vegetables and nuts as well.

TrickyD · 27/10/2019 20:23

AutumnCrow , I have a horrible feeling that those were the sweets we crushed and unsuccessfully used last year, probably because they were the only ones DH could find.

Poor show, Baroness. Cruelly choosing to wait until it is too late for the rest of us to copy your method.

Yes, whatever happened to value flat boiled sweets?

iknowimcoming · 27/10/2019 20:46

I've used fox's fruits before in biscuits and they were fine, normally use waitrose own brand boils sweets - I never crush the sweets either just bake the biscuits for 5 mins then add the sweets and put back in oven - dead easy! Oh and don't forget to make holes for the string/ribbon!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 28/10/2019 09:34

i am not sure, but I think they have to be old stylee packed full of sugar boiled sweets, anything that's too modern and sugar free and good for your teeth doesn't melt properly

I did some once but they were absolute bastards to get off the tray, I had to keep the tray warm on the top of the oven, like when you make brandy snaps and the twats won't roll if they are less than a degree under lava hot.

So it's not really a child friendly baking process, is it, if we're talking about exploding rivers of molten sugar lava? I was going to make them with OH's DGC tomorrow but I'm scared now.

drspouse · 28/10/2019 17:28

I wouldn't, I used melted sugar to stick a gingerbread house together and sent all the children (even the 12 year old) out of the room.

AutumnCrow · 28/10/2019 17:54

Yes, I think that was wise. I'll have to make them solo, while actually concentrating, wearing gauntlets and a welding mask.

I'm losing the festive vibe, if I'm honest.

Barbarara · 28/10/2019 21:53

I’ve used polo fruits successfully before do they still make them? I think they are supposed to smash better if you put them in the freezer first though I can’t really fathom what the difference would be. I just sorted the colours into ziplock bags and channelled my frustrations with a hammer.
I used baking paper (not greaseproof paper or the brown stuff) and had no sticking problems.
It’s fine to do with children. They can do all the usual mixing, rolling and sprinkling. They only become a hazard when you’re taking them out of the oven by which time the dc have wandered off to watch tv and smear their floury fingers on the curtains.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 28/10/2019 21:55

Ooh I made these with rather too many kids in my kitchen last year. Great fun though and they loved them! Foxes Glacier Fruits are just the thing. Let me find a pic.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 28/10/2019 21:58

I used a gingerbread dough

About 10-15 mins cooking time. I put the sweet in the middle at the start of baking

That’s a tiny tree, not massive biscuits!

AutumnCrow · 28/10/2019 22:00

They're so pretty!

tunnocksreturns2019 · 28/10/2019 22:01

Glacier fruits are quite big. I did try fancier biscuits with smaller cut-out sections and crushed glacier fruits, but it ended badly.

Shout if you want my gingerbread recipe. I’m away from home at the moment but can send it when I get back. Good Food magazine Dec 2012 I think!! The dough is so nice I could eat it all raw Blush

tunnocksreturns2019 · 28/10/2019 22:05

Btw my friend sent me some Moffat toffee to see what would happen. They were...weird. God only knows what the melting point of THAT is 🤣

TrickyD · 29/10/2019 09:47

Tunnock! they are beautiful and exactly what mine looked like - in my imagination. 🙁

Like AutumnCrow, my festive vibe was on the decline, you have rekindled it. Yes a

I was trying to say a tried and tested recipe would be most welcome, please.

Yes please to your recipe, @tunnocksreturn2019 Smile

tunnocksreturns2019 · 29/10/2019 18:20

Ooh will dig recipe out tonight 😊

AutumnCrow · 29/10/2019 19:13

Thanks - looking forward to a bit of baking, with or without the molten sugar.

Talking of which - I was looking online, and saw that some people add food colouring to white sugar, and shake it up in a bag, to make lovely coloured sugars for baking. Would they melt ok?

tunnocksreturns2019 · 30/10/2019 15:53

Here comes great gingerbread recipe. Makes an enormous amount because it’s for an entire house - second pic is my scaled down quantity. Why it’s part in grams and part in ounces is anyone’s guess, but it works 🤣
