Particularly vintage or children's books. I collect Christmas books and have just ordered the new Shirley Hughes. I think it's the illustrations I like the most. Shirley Hughes is a favourite because of the evocative illustrations.

I am idly browsing online and wondered if anybody had recommendations for much loved, beautiful Christmas books that I haven't stumbled across before?

Just bought this yesterday for my 3yo niece, it’s a lift the flap book.

Also love Dream Snow by Eric Carle.

5foot5 I came on to say "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" by Barbara Robinson. It's funny for children and adults alike, and a little bit moving, and we read it every year, a chapter a night for the week before Christmas.

It’s not beautiful in the same way as these but we have been highly amused by “The Dinosaur Who Pooped Christmas” by Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter!

LadyPeter I just came into the thread to suggest The Worst Christmas Pageant Ever! I can make myself cry just by thinking about it.

Other suggestions:

Not for the illustrations but the atmosphere - my favourite Christmas book ever is The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper

Mog’s Christmas

Lucy and Tom’s Christmas by Shirley hughes - the picture of Tom and grandpa going for a walk in the snow, just the two of them, never fails to make me cry.

The Christmas Book by Dick Bruna

End of Term by Antonia Forest (wonderful school story with a Christmas play as a main plot point)

One Snowy Night by M Christina Butler

The scene in What Katy Did at School where they get their Christmas parcels from home

bookworm Yes to What Katy did at school! I had no idea what most of the treats were, but they sounded like a wonderful antidote to that boarding school, which was hellish.

This is a fabulous thread, I always get my children a book each on Christmas Eve but I’ve added how winston save Christmas as an advent book this year, it’s gorgeous! Thanks for all the recommendations!

My friend bought my daughter a gorgeous pop-up “Night before Christmas”. blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/product/9780689838996?gC=5a105e8b&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0Kia1abW5QIVhbTtCh2VNQw1EAQYASABEgJcjPD_BwE

We have a sweet Australian book that my little girl likes called “Wombat Divine”.

We also enjoyed a pull the tab version of “The Nutcracker” when she was a toddler - www.amazon.co.uk/Nutcracker-First-Stories-Dan-Taylor/dp/1509818375?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

“The Jolly Christmas postman” will be our new Christmas Eve book this year. Last year’s was “Mog’s Christmas”. Maybe “The Snowman” next year.

Another vote also for “the Box of Delights”, which will definitely be a future new Christmas book for us - or the 1980s BBC adaptation. Just the first bar of the Hely Hutchinson Carol Symphony setting of the First Nowell is so evocative - frosty country Christmases.

Glad I've refound this thread, now just got to cut down my amazon basket a little :-(

PurpleSproutingSomething · 23/11/2019 21:59

Not sure if anyone has said it already, but 'Father Christmas, All About Me' by John and Julia Atkinson is the most beautiful Christmas book I have ever seen.
