Particularly vintage or children's books. I collect Christmas books and have just ordered the new Shirley Hughes. I think it's the illustrations I like the most. Shirley Hughes is a favourite because of the evocative illustrations.

I am idly browsing online and wondered if anybody had recommendations for much loved, beautiful Christmas books that I haven't stumbled across before?

Mr Willowby’s Christmas Tree is beautiful

We love Jesus’ Christmas Party by Nicholas Allan

“A special new enlarged edition of the bestselling Christmas story told from the point of view of the grumpy innkeeper. When a night of angels, shepherds and bright stars keeps him from his sleep, is there anything that will cheer him up? ”

“ROUND THE BACK ! “

Kippers Christmas Eve - Mick Inkpen
Lucy and Tom’s Christmas
Mogs Christmas

Jostein Garder: The Christmas Mystery. A chapter for every day of Advent. We read it most years in the run up to Christmas and it is really magical.

Sorry to jump on your thread OP, but can anyone recommend any adult Christmas books?

RolytheRhino · 13/10/2019 21:35

Christmas at Ivy Cottage is one of my all time favourites.

There was also a collection of short stories that I've tried in vain to find. It had one about a robin on an icy morning and one about a group of children coming downstairs on Christmas morning to find the tree all decorated. Not to derail, but does anyone know which it might be? It had lost its cover long before I started to recall memories.

Matt Haig’s Christmas books are lovely,

Dear Show, whose companionship I have enjoyed on MN for close to a decade, and whose username is the name of one of my first musical loves, please let me introduce you to the Empress of Christmas books; Jan Brett. Take some time to browse her work on Amazon (the 'Look Inside' function) or just Google her (images) to see her jaw droppingly gorgeous illustrations. I buy my DC one of her books each Christmas; we have now run out of her Christmas / winter themed ones, but they still (9 & 6) still insist on a 'Jan book' every year.

Campervan69 · 13/10/2019 21:40

Apologies I haven't read the full thread so not sure if anyone has mention this but we bought my son a recordable book of the night before Christmas and each member of the family read a page of it to him and recorded their voice. It's so precious now especially because his grandfather is no longer with us and his brothers have grown up and sound so so young in this recording so we love listening to it every year.

Second vote for the Jolly Christmas Postman.

I also loved this one and intend to read it to my DC - "Wake up Dormouse, Santa Clause is here" The illustrations were just lovely and wintery.

Also, Christmas in Noisy Village by Astrid Lindgren (translated from Swedish) is a gem, with beautiful illustrations by Ilon Wikland.

daisydalrymple · 13/10/2019 21:42

I absolutely love the Winnie the Pooh little Christmas books for their illustrations. (they’re not AA Milne, but lovely nonetheless)
Also the Elmer Christmas book too. We have a lovely little edition, which I think adds to the charm, but I’ve not found it in that size since, when I’ve searched for it for gifts.

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 13/10/2019 21:44

I see someone has already mentioned Carol Ann Duffy but her Wenceslas is lovely, and Mrs Scrooge

daisydalrymple · 13/10/2019 21:45

Elmer’s Christmas is actually on amazon as mini hardback. That’s the one I mean.

Hippee · 13/10/2019 21:49

My mum and I read "Little Christmas" by Agnes Sligh Turnbull every year - it's not a children's book, but it is from 1966 and has lovely pictures - you'd have to get it 2nd hand though, as it is out of print. We love Harvey Schlumfenberger too, and the Raymond Briggs Father Christmas. We have the Night before Christmas with illustrations by Niroot Puttapipat, which is lovely. We also love "Is it Christmas?" by John Prater and "Donkey Daniel in Bethlehem" by Janice Kramer (again out of print but available on Amazon). And Shirley Hughes, of course Grin.

Trumpton · 13/10/2019 21:51

@AdultHumanFemale
I have just ordered 12 days of Christmas by Jan Brett .
Truly lovely . Thank you .

Speckledhen10 · 13/10/2019 21:51

Little Grey Rabbits Christmas by Alison Uttley. A beautiful simple tale of Christmas without consumerism.

IncrediblySadToo · 13/10/2019 22:05

This could be an expensive thread I feel...

hoopdeloop · 13/10/2019 22:39

I have just received ‘How Winston Delivered Christmas’ by Alex Smith. You read a chapter a day in December and at the end of each chapter there’s a Christmassy activity you can do, it’s lovely!

CharminglyGawky · 13/10/2019 22:54

I have a Nutcracker pop up book which according to Amazon is by Jenni Fleetwood and illustrated by Philida Gili

It's beautiful, really really beautiful, I've had it since I was tiny and can't wait to share it with my DS. Not this year though as he is 2 and some of the pop up elements are very delicate, and the book is 25ish years old so not pristine as it is!

inneedofchocolate · 13/10/2019 22:58

Look at Robert Sabuda books. He makes beautiful, detailed pop up books and a lot have a Christmas theme. Every Christmas Eve I read the night before Christmas with my children x

whereareallmyhairbands · 13/10/2019 23:12

The song of the stars ⭐️

It's beautiful

BertieBotts · 13/10/2019 23:15

Have not rtft.

One winter's day is nice. That's about a group of animals who all pass a hat between them.

I used to have a wonderful edition of the night before Christmas as a child, I'll see if I can find it for you. www.abebooks.co.uk/9781852131234/Night-Before-Christmas-Changing-Picture-1852131233/plp

Found it Smile

Saisong · 13/10/2019 23:18

I always think of 'The Children of Green Knowe' as a Christmas book.

Mog's Christmas was a favourite when the kids were small

debbiewest0 · 13/10/2019 23:26

Our new favourite last year was “The Empty Stocking” by Richard Curtis. A simple, beautiful story with a slight twist at the end. About twin sisters, one “good” and one apparently “naughty”
