John Lewis Christmas department - is it me?

Have they gone for the outright bonkers?

The decorations are themed by colour.

Green/peacock, pale pink, white, red and russet.

Each set of beautifully made glass baubles contain odd additions.

Green for example has avocados, asparagus, onions, wellington boots, greenhouses, Santa as a gardener and a floret of broccoli.

Red has a roast turkey and all the trimmings, a turkey staring straight at you with a full fan tail, a cook book, bacon and eggs in a frying pan, a chocolate Yule log and a pork pie, complete with red berry.

Russet has a caravan and a variety of toadstools.

Tinsel, decorative objects and tree skirts all coordinate.

Who's going to buy all this?

Who's buying a gigantic bauble filled with feathers (white)?

Who's buying a garland consisting of folksy pom-poms and bells?

I'm with you @Gingernaut I was in there last week and there was hardly anything I liked. I'm full traditional at Christmas and I just can't get my head around hanging an flamingo or an avocado on my Christmas tree. I like things to be fun and lively - just in the Christmas theme, that's all. I'm not sure they're hitting their target market with those decs, they are more like what I'd expect to find in Paperchase.

eeksville · 06/10/2019 10:54

I'm assuming they want to expand their market in order to survive the tough high street. Looking online they seem to have plenty of traditional baubles in red, gold & white etc.

Butterymuffin · 06/10/2019 10:56

AuntieMarys PLEASE post a photo of your Bowie themed tree! I'd love to see it.

I like the sound of the bacon and eggs in frying pan bauble. Got something similar in an old style advent calendar many years ago. Will have to get down to JL.

eeksville · 06/10/2019 10:58

I was eyeing these up & they would totally suit a Bowie tree!

To whoever mentioned turkeys being aggressive on the first page, you are so right, I once got chased and attacked by one. Violent fucker. I always think of it when I enjoy my Christmas dinner.

everythingisginandroses · 06/10/2019 11:44

I feel ya, OP. These don't sound Christmassy to me. Xmas Confused

Chrysanthemum5 · 06/10/2019 11:52

@sunshinestanley where did you get your narwhal decoration? That would make my DD's Christmas!

NanooCov · 06/10/2019 11:53

Thanks for this thread. Have just bought all the dinosaurs. Was also very tempted by robot, Arabian, bus, juggling ballerina and many more.

NanooCov · 06/10/2019 11:54

Arabian?!? Should read caravan 😄

MorrisZapp · 06/10/2019 11:54

I love the look of those bright, glassy glittery decs but for some reason the feel of them freaks me out. I like a more solid bauble or knick knack.

NanooCov · 06/10/2019 11:56

@chuckeeee

I do like the greenhouse one too. But camping Santa? He doesn't have time to camp! Crazy*

He goes camping in Father Christmas (Raymond Briggs). Though is not a huge fan.

MorrisZapp · 06/10/2019 12:00

Omg! Have checked them out. OK I need them all. The caravan is divine and I love the traditional teapot too. JL will owe MN a kickback for this thread!

SoupDragon · 06/10/2019 12:05

Last year I bought a glittery emerald green snail bauble from JL to qualify for free delivery. He has been on display all year 😂

Zillaindie · 06/10/2019 12:32

On a roll....Christmas train reduced...I am sorely tempted but pretty sure it will get destroyed by the toddlers...or the cats.

@StealthNinjaMum DS got chased by one at a farm, it proper had it in for him! He was only 4 at the time but he still hates them 😂

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 06/10/2019 12:54

I think they are lovely. We will definitely be buying the dinosaur ones, probably the spaceman (for dc1) and Santa as a gardener as it looks just like Fil.

We already have an octopus, a whale, several dinosaurs and a big bad wolf.

PrestonNotHeston · 06/10/2019 13:20

I think it's so the whole family can create passive aggressive messages.

eg: asparagus, greenhouse, whales, jellyfish = Tesco's Peruvian asparagus is killing the planet

bacon & eggs in frying pan, coffee pot = breakfast, please

avocado + Santa in a tent = even Santa is unable to afford a house in the North Pole due to his smashed avocado addiction

God knows what the binoculars are all about.

LiGlitterBug · 06/10/2019 13:27

Ooh love these! We have a classic tree (real, red and gold with some vintage ornaments) and (my favourite) tacky fake pink one with Disney and ‘weird’ ornaments- I’m always looking out for oddities!
I bought my friend a pig in blanket bauble one year from a local craft market, she loved it!

Shantotto · 06/10/2019 16:00

@eeksville are those from John Lewis too? I just have them!

Shantotto · 06/10/2019 16:01

MUST stupid autocorrect

eeksville · 06/10/2019 16:04

@Shantotto the celestial ones? They are in Selfridges

BentNeckLady · 06/10/2019 16:06

My kitchen Christmas tree had a space theme last year. JL came up trumps! I like their garden theme this year🌱🍃🌲

PegasusReturns · 06/10/2019 16:15

I love a tree full of random ornaments - I buy a few every year and now have over 300. I adore the randomness and everyone always compliments my tree Smile

Celebelly · 06/10/2019 16:21

Ooh thanks for this, just bought the greenhouse and welly ones for my mum for Christmas! I get her baubles every year but have been running out of ideas... she's an avid gardener so these are perfect!
