John Lewis Christmas department - is it me?

Have they gone for the outright bonkers?

The decorations are themed by colour.

Green/peacock, pale pink, white, red and russet.

Each set of beautifully made glass baubles contain odd additions.

Green for example has avocados, asparagus, onions, wellington boots, greenhouses, Santa as a gardener and a floret of broccoli.

Red has a roast turkey and all the trimmings, a turkey staring straight at you with a full fan tail, a cook book, bacon and eggs in a frying pan, a chocolate Yule log and a pork pie, complete with red berry.

Russet has a caravan and a variety of toadstools.

Tinsel, decorative objects and tree skirts all coordinate.

Who's going to buy all this?

Who's buying a gigantic bauble filled with feathers (white)?

Who's buying a garland consisting of folksy pom-poms and bells?

They are themed. Campfire, Sanctuary, Garden etc. It’s marketing so that people will buy a whole theme for their Christmas decorations. The adverts have definitely gone down hill over the years.

IncrediblySadToo · 06/10/2019 07:07

@Pinkywoo I love your duck!

My decorations are very colourful, no ‘theme’ here, other than ‘if you can see pine needles’ there’s room for another one’ but they are ‘traditional’ to an extent - nothing completely random like 🥑 ,

....yet

Sux2buthen · 06/10/2019 07:28

Nothing says Christmas like a flamingo on a scooter. Having said that, my two year old laughed so much it's almost worth buying it Grin

You need to watch Dogma to see what I mean!

Bunnybigears · 06/10/2019 07:59

Ooh I also have a tree full of random decorations with no teo the same. I the k our weirdest is a santa robot or maybe the wooden spoon angel. I'm off to John Lewis I think mybtree needs some broccoli.

BowiesJumper · 06/10/2019 08:02

I have all this kind of thing too! It’s still quite tasteful... this has made me want to go in and get some new ones!

missyB1 · 06/10/2019 08:06

I love John Lewis at Christmas!

I don’t buy decorations because I’m a traditionalist and I love using all our decorations that we’ve had for years (some are from my childhood). But every year I go to the Birmingham John Lewis with my sister, it’s about an hours train journey for me but we make a real day of it. John Lewis know how to do Christmas!

Trewser · 06/10/2019 08:09

gingernaut I'm with you. Can't bear silly xmas decs, although i did cave one year and bought a set of Alice in Wonderland decs.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 06/10/2019 08:22

@Lovelydovey there is a sloth? That's me over there tomorrow then!

NoWordForFluffy · 06/10/2019 08:24

John Lewis' sloth!

Kittykatmacbill · 06/10/2019 08:47

We were in yesterday looking at mattresses, isn’t being a grown up fab!

And took the pair round, ALL beautiful glass thing, but doesn’t really go with the felty theme of the tree. So a tad disappointed but not because I don’t like broccoli, bluewhales or sloths.

Mrsfussypants1 · 06/10/2019 08:49

I love all the eclectic decorations in john Lewis, so much fun. It has become the in thing to have an individual tree full of unique decorations that some up the individual family, it's both fun and and nostalgic and to my taste. I couldn't have a blush pink or scandi tree that blends in, I've been there done that.

eeksville · 06/10/2019 08:52

I'm loving their work this year. I've purchased dinosaur & jellyfish baubles.

AuntieStella · 06/10/2019 08:54

Thank you OP - I'll be off to John Lewis soon!

The broccoli decoration in particular sounds exactly right.

CherryPlum · 06/10/2019 08:57

OP I couldn't agree more, it is bonkers! An explosion of strange and tacky baubles. I saw it and literally thought who on earth would buy this? I came to the conclusion maybe a drag queen?! I can see that working. It would be in-line with that crazy superficial surreal bizarre look.

It's expensive too. Utterly odd.

eeksville · 06/10/2019 09:00

It's expensive too. Utterly odd.

There not really, small expensive brands have been doing this type of thing for yrs & you see them in Liberty/Selfridges priced at £30 a bauble.

CherryPlum · 06/10/2019 09:02

And my tree has no theme either, from memory I have a mis-matched selection of red, gold, baubles, reindeer, gold glittert stars, snowman, toy train - actual Christmassy items. No sloths or frying pans

eeksville · 06/10/2019 09:09

But animals love christmas too! 😆

We have lots of random baubles. We buy a couple every year and often special ones on ‘big’ holidays abroad, so some really meaningful decorations for our family. I’m glad to hear broccoli is back - Paperchase sold out last year before I could buy one. It was one of DS2’s first words, so I was planning to buy it for him. Our philosophy is that we keep buying new ones so that our boys can each take a starter set from the family collection when they eventually move out.

eeksville · 06/10/2019 09:11

Don't get me wrong I love traditional & my family home was like Home Alone with all the red & green, but sometimes it's nice to mix it up hence why i'm rebelling & going colourful & animally this yr.
