Best mince pies (shop bought)

Where can I find the best supermarket mince pies? I've tried the Morrisons ones, no thanks.

Just had a sainsburys taste the difference all butter one and that's definitely the best so far.

My mums homemade ones are always my favourite but I'm not a great baker so it's easier to get some in for when people are round.

Only got a Morrisons, Asda, Tesco, Co-op, Sainsbury's and M&S around here for reference.

My vote is m&s. I've tried Waitrose posh ones and basic - both horrible. Lidl - ok but not as good as m&s.

Stormwhale · 08/12/2018 20:01

I think the ones from the bakery in the supermarkets are always better. Asda bakery ones are delicious. The pastry is so short it's gorgeous. So much better than the boxes of them.

QuickChatChange · 08/12/2018 20:03

Another vote for the Sainsbury's taste the difference! Especially the mini ones, somehow even nicer than the bigger ones. We went through SO many boxes last year and our on our way to doing the same this year Blush

Coop do an all biter puff pastry mince pie. Whack it in the oven to warn and boom.bloody gorgeous.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/12/2018 20:33

Sainsbury's bakery ones are lovely.

I've made plenty this year so we've not bought any though.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 08/12/2018 20:42

Florries those co-op ones need muzzling Wink

Serin · 08/12/2018 20:44

Costco. Very light sponge topping. Mmmm

Floralnomad · 08/12/2018 20:45

The Costco ones are indeed lovely , but as I don’t get there often we are having different types off the Tesco bakery and they are all lovely .

OrangeSamphire · 08/12/2018 20:48

Last year I would have said M&S. this year they are too sweet.

Waitrose ones are awful. Especially the 1 range super expensive ones. I mean they’ve got glacé cherries in ffs.

I’m thinking of going bog standard Sainsbury’s for my next mince pie purchase. If I can’t be bothered to make any.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 08/12/2018 20:51

Last year it was M&S but this year Sainsbury's Taste The Difference. I have eaten far too many already!

adoggymum · 08/12/2018 20:51

@NoWordForFluffy unbelievably there was literally NOTHING in the bakery section of our Sainsbury's today😱 shelves had been cleared😂

SmilingGivesYouWrinkles · 08/12/2018 20:52

Maybe not helpful because recipes keep being changed but we did a massive taste test last year and the favourites were Waitrose essentials.

adoggymum · 08/12/2018 20:52

@Stuckforthefourthtime I do agree, I've just had another before my dinner😳😋 had to drink loads of water after as they're quite indulgent!

NoWordForFluffy · 08/12/2018 20:53

Obviously the quality of them has got out, @adoggymum!

adoggymum · 08/12/2018 20:54

@SmilingGivesYouWrinkles unfortunately there's no Waitrose around here so I'll have to keep an eye out if we go somewhere that has one!

I might get my mums recipe and attempt to make some, I've always been notoriously bad at baking though😫 (my cooking skills are good however!)

Hate how much mess baking makes.

E20mom · 08/12/2018 20:54

I always go for m&s

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 08/12/2018 20:54

adoggymum · 08/12/2018 20:54

@NoWordForFluffy Definitely! Might have to get there on opening tomorrow to taste the little wonders!😜

Aldi, salted caramel mince pies.
You can thank me later!
Last year they also did chocolate orange mince pies. Also incredible.

adoggymum · 08/12/2018 20:55

@WinkyisbackontheButterBeer yeah I had the boxed ones, and the Kipling ones from there too.

Not a fan of Tesco's fresh bakery ones, I don't really like the look of any of the bakery ones I've seen so far.

Aldi frangipane mince pies are apparently very good - my OH is very picky and usually likes it traditional without too much embellishment but he was very impressed. They also do an almond mince pie tart which he said was nice but not anywhere near the frangipane ones, and the classic mince pies are good too. In each case it’s the ‘specially selected’, not the bog standard version. Worth a try maybe?

adoggymum · 08/12/2018 20:56

@numberonehundredandseventyfour that sounds horrid to me😂 sorry!

ursuslemonade · 08/12/2018 20:57

Aldi and Tesco tiny ones with courvoisier. They both taste great and are probably from the same factory.

adoggymum · 08/12/2018 20:58

@HolgerLowCarbingLoser I guess I'm like your OH then as I like them simple as well :) no icing or extras!

I'll have to check out Aldi again- I was there on Friday but didn't really look at the Christmas section (criminal I know!)

I bought the bakery 4-pack of puff pastry mince pies from Morrisons on Thursday morning and ate them all for lunch Blush. They were soooooo good! Not going back to shortcrust pastry ones again.
