Scented Candles

Can anyone point me in the direction of good quality scented candles that don’t cost the earth but do actually smell.

I bought some beeswax ones in America a few years ago that were fab but I can’t get them here though (and they weigh too much to make shipping practical)

I’ve tried the Asda Jo Malone looking one and it doesn’t smell.

I like musky, heavy scents as opposed to sweet, flowery ones.

Molton Brown are brilliant, but a bit pricey. I tend to wait for a 20/25% off sale. They’re Usually around £36 for a single wick candle but they last for ages and have a noticeable scent.

Like you, I prefer musky scents and I always have a Black Pepper candle somewhere around the house. Fingers crossed that Father Christmas might bring me the Russian Leather Candle this year!

I'm currently being followed round the internet by a brand called Neom (and if you click on this link, they can follow you too!)

However, I know they're a bit naff (but so many things are at Christmas), but Yankee do have discernible scents, and nice ones if you're picky, and very, very affordable.

Angelkd · 05/11/2018 16:16

I do love yankee ones those are the only ones i have used x

Frosty66611 · 05/11/2018 16:19

Some of the Lily Flame ones are really strong and only cost about £9. I like the Whispered Wish one (smells like spiced orange and cloves) and the Frankincense one is lovely too.

bakingdemon · 05/11/2018 16:19

The White Company's Winter candle is £20 and is v nice. They're usually doing some kind of promotion

Mountainsided · 05/11/2018 16:20

CandleBelle do amazing wax melts for my slightly lower temp electric burner, so I’m assuming their candles smell amazing too.

BertBox · 05/11/2018 16:57

Be careful with Yankee candles - they turned my wall black and we had to repaint!

I find reed diffusers stronger than cheaper candles - almost to the point of overpowering sometimes though.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/11/2018 17:15

I'm a Yankee fan but they do tend to bring out the same smells with a different name for each year.

I like the clove/cinnamon ones, my favourite Christmas one is Sparkling Cinnamon (saw it in the Yankee Store so I reckon I need to go and buy it Xmas Grin )

I did try looking in HomeSense/TKMaxx but its impossible to define which candle smells of what - there's just an over all aroma.

There are some crackling wick mulri layred ones in Boots at the moment .
And I was reading a magazine article recenty , they recommended a Crabtree+Evelyn one .

Villanelle123 · 05/11/2018 17:16

Bought a Next candle recently and loved it. The scent is New York

CraicMammy · 05/11/2018 17:19

Google “thebeardedcandlemakers” beautiful hand poured candles, soy wax, gorgeous aromas, great prices. I’ve just ordered two, I love them!

TheCraicDealer · 05/11/2018 17:32

I always recommend the Bearded Candle Makers! A friend of mine was one of the two guys that started it before they split up. They're really decent candles, there's one called Midnight Mass which is lovely, as is Real Turf Fire. Shells Seaside Cafe is my favourite though. And as they're soy they smoke a lot less. I also use the wax melts which are great.

Candlebelle are also from NI. I got a melt selection and was pretty disappointed tbh, didn't find there was much of a scent to them.

Bearbehind · 05/11/2018 17:46

Thanks for the suggestions. If only there was a way to test the scents and order on line!

Looks like I’m going to have to venture into real shops!

Fstar · 05/11/2018 18:39

Another vote for molton brown as a luxury one, the shops and outlets have them
Cheap id go for yankee

Fstar · 05/11/2018 18:39

Oh yes and the home bargains are nice too, especially gingerbread but some are better than others

MissMarplesKnitting · 05/11/2018 18:44

I'm a fusspot on fragrances and so far I've found only a few I like.

Weirdly two were in my local posh garden centre, by a firm called heart & home. One was a Christmas tree one that genuinely smells like real tree. Not pine loo cleaner like most do. The other was called cashmere and was a lovely snuggly warming comforting sort of smell.

I can't stop thinking about them so I'm going to go and buy a cashmere one for now, and the tree one for the festive season.

oldsewandsew · 05/11/2018 18:46

Snow Fall by Lily Flame is my absolute favourite! I’ve found the same with Yankee Candles turning the wall black unfortunately, as they do some really lovely scents.

Tulipvase · 05/11/2018 19:25

For a Christmas smell, the John Lewis winter spice is nice. It’s £18 so not too bad. Also, a brand called St Eval are nice too.

I am actually quite happy to use the glade ones on a daily basis. I love all the wintry ones; blackberry and spiced apple are nice.

BentNeckLady · 05/11/2018 19:29

Shearer candles Amber Noir would be right up your street I think. You can get them on Amazon’s

SneakyGremlins · 05/11/2018 19:33

Noting all these down! Grin

I love Yankee Smile

PersonaNonGarter · 06/11/2018 08:24

The Diptyque Christmas ones are all gorgeous. The almond one is amazing.

Alpacaface · 06/11/2018 20:16

Try the company "Can to Candle". Every candle i've had from them smells amazing and really fills the place with scent without being at all sickly or cloying.

StealingYourWiFi · 06/11/2018 20:31

Bath and Body Works Mahogany Teakwood. It smells SO strong, it smells really gorgeous like a heavy mens aftershave. They are a US company but you can get them from ebay.

Trying2bemum · 06/11/2018 20:37

Sainsbury's do a black amber and patchouli one that I really like

I also love Muji candles - their Hinoki Wood is my fave

Stefoscope · 07/11/2018 22:28

I find St Eval have a nice strong essential oil scent and aren't too pricey.
