I want to get some Christmas DVDs for the kids (6yo) and also for me... can you tell me what your all time favourites are? I'm trying to remember the things I would have watched on tv in the 80s... the Miracle on 34th Street I remember, and the Snowman, but in those pre-internet times I forgot everything else...

So far I've got for me
Holiday Inn
It's a Wonderful Life

and for the kids

Miracle on 34th Street (the original, if they'll sit still for it)
The Nightmare Before Christmas
A Christmas Carol - but I don't know what version, the Jim Carrey Disney version was on TV last year but it was a bit weird

What else would you suggest?

We watch 'Jingle all the way' every year.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 27/10/2018 11:59

Muppet Christmas Carol and Home Alone for all of you. Die Hard for you.

SeaViewBliss · 27/10/2018 12:01

I second Muppet Christmas Carol. It’s a legal requirement in this house!

My DCs liked Elf but we’ve done it to death a bit and they’re 13 and 20 now!

KC225 · 27/10/2018 12:10

I force my family to watch ELF every year. Every year it's eye rolls, groans, 'no ways' and they do and its chocolate popcorn for the kids, no phones. And we love it.

Other favourites are Jingle all the way. Home Alone of course and the kids like Polar Express.

Woohoo1 · 27/10/2018 12:12

Muppet Christmas Carol x 100

Dragonlight · 27/10/2018 12:13

The old cartoons like Frosty the snowman and Jack Frost. Rudolph. And a cabbage patch kids christmas.

The movie One Magic Christmas (beginning could be a little traumatic for some. Car jacking, dad gets shot, kids go into river-all ends well though)

Home Alone
The Snowman
The Grinch

Trading Places for you.

kitbabingley · 27/10/2018 12:21

Raymond Briggs' Father Christmas. It's not Christmas here without it!

daphine2004 · 27/10/2018 12:23

Arthur Christmas for the whole family. It’s great!

Also second Miracle on 34th Street, Elf and Home Alone.

Last year I was made to watch Lethal Weapon under my protests that it wasn’t a Christmas film. It was set at Christmas, but this will no doubt be an annual argument!

puddingjuly · 27/10/2018 12:27

Scrooged - every year.
Me and DH watch four Christmases every year while wrapping presents.
For some reasons my dc insist on watching the Nigella and river cottage Christmas shows on the food channel every year 😂

MrsW85 · 27/10/2018 12:32

Polar express, Arthur Christmas, Muppet Christmas Carol, home alone. We love Mickey's once and twice upon a Christmas too.

MrsW85 · 27/10/2018 12:34

I've just remembered Planes, trains and automobiles too.

Butterflycookie · 27/10/2018 12:39

donquixotedelamancha · 27/10/2018 15:36

A Christmas Carol - but I don't know what version

As PPs say, the Muppet's version is the definitive Christmas carol.

I second Die Hard as the best Christmas movie after that.

incendio · 27/10/2018 15:58

I second Raymond Briggs' Father Christmas, me and my sister watch it every year and enthusiastically belt the song out

daphine2004 · 27/10/2018 17:42

I meant Die Hard, not Lethal Weapon. It clearly had a lasting impact on me...

Imustbemad00 · 27/10/2018 22:19
