I want to get some Christmas DVDs for the kids (6yo) and also for me... can you tell me what your all time favourites are? I'm trying to remember the things I would have watched on tv in the 80s... the Miracle on 34th Street I remember, and the Snowman, but in those pre-internet times I forgot everything else...

So far I've got for me
Holiday Inn
It's a Wonderful Life

and for the kids

Miracle on 34th Street (the original, if they'll sit still for it)
The Nightmare Before Christmas
A Christmas Carol - but I don't know what version, the Jim Carrey Disney version was on TV last year but it was a bit weird

What else would you suggest?

Garfield Christmas special from late 80s/early 90s, it's on YouTube.
Serendipity for you
For the kids - Olive the other Reindeer is lovely. (Drew Barrymore's voice!)

As per PP - Jingle all the way, home alone 1 and 2 (don't go further than that!), Muppet Christmas Carol

Fevertree · 28/10/2018 05:35

Absolutely the nuppets Christmas Carol x

INeedNewShoes · 28/10/2018 06:21

DD's first Christmas last year and we were given the Raymond Briggs Father Christmas DVD. I think watching it will become a family tradition for us.

I was new to A Muppets Christmas Carol last year and absolutely love it.

Home Alone as my childhood favourite.

candlefloozy · 28/10/2018 06:31

Muppet Christmas carol is my fave by far!!!! Watched it every Christmas since I was a little girl

2ducks2ducklings · 28/10/2018 06:39

Nativity!
I love that film.

CountFosco · 28/10/2018 06:43

Nativity and Arthur Christmas here. Annabelle's wish is sweet for little ones. We don't like Elf in this house.

errorofjudgement · 28/10/2018 07:02

Elf
The Santa Clause 1-3
White Christmas
Harry Potter & Philosophers Stone

MouseRatFan · 28/10/2018 07:12

Elf, the santa Claus trilogy, Christmas with the kranks, the family man, Jack frost, scrooge and my all time favourite Christmas in Conneticut.

If you search on Netflix you will find a lot of Christmas themed episodes of kids TV. My dc love the Christmas episode of Home.

liquidrevolution · 28/10/2018 07:16

Buddy the Elf! It's our Christmas eve film.

Iminastoreandimsinging · 28/10/2018 07:24

DamnCommandments · 28/10/2018 07:38

We love Arthur Christmas! It's brilliant. So funny, suitable for all ages, plenty of interest for adults too. Turns out, being Santa is a family affair. Grandpa Santa is ancient, crotchety and desperate to be revered. Santa is getting on a bit, and getting complacent. Steve, the heir to the sleigh, is bossy and efficient. And then there's younger brother Arthur and the elves.

DamnCommandments · 28/10/2018 07:39

Oh, and Die Hard for me!

DamnCommandments · 28/10/2018 07:39

And Die Hard 2. "Just the fax, ma'am."

Yutes · 28/10/2018 08:02

@70isaLimitNotaTarget I watch Lost Christmas too. I got it on amazon on dvd.
And Fast Freddie, the Widow and Me. Both brilliant Christmas tv specials.

Home Alone, Love Actually, Scrooge’s, Elf, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, Jack Frost

jupiterdawn · 28/10/2018 09:04

Prep and Landing and Arthur Christmas- Christmas Eve tradition in this house.

jo10000 · 28/10/2018 16:02

The Nutcracker - Barbie, and Tom and Jerry versions. Nativity 1 is a must. We've also included Paddington and Frozen in the kids, and family, Christmas list. For me and DH we watch You've Got Mail, an American President, and Serendipity.

Lovemusic33 · 28/10/2018 17:16

National lampoons Christmas vacation (one of the best films)
Elf (a must)

Nativity 1&2

RedPandaMama · 28/10/2018 17:18

Die Hard
The Grinch
The Harry Potter films always feel Christmassy to me too.

toomuchtooold · 29/10/2018 06:39

These are great suggestions, thanks! I wonder what we'll get in German Netflix - they've put a ton of Halloween stuff on sonI guess we'll be well provided for! I did already order a Jingle all the way/miracle on 34th st/home alone dvd box set for 7 euros though so we're definitely well prepared!

Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas
Muppet Christmas Carol
Arthur Christmas
Fred Claus
Get Santa
Deck the Halls
Lost Christmas
Home Alone (1&2 only, the others were a travesty!)
Santa Claus the Movie

  • and for me: It's a Wonderful Life the original Miracle on 34th St Love Actually Four Christmases The Holiday.
