Anyone going for a non traditional Christmas dinner ?

Just being nosy really. It'll just be me, dh and 2 dcs (3 and 4) for dinner this year. Dh doesn't like turkey and dcs won't eat it so we've decided on steak and chips and pizza for dcs. Ice cream, top hats and cup cakes.
I shall get a traditional dinner at my dms on Boxing Day, she does it much better than me anyway . What's everyone else having if not the usual?

We always have the traditional but its quite a faff for what is basically a massive roast dinner. I like the idea of a non trad xmas dinner but not sure how it would go down with the family. Only problem is what do you eat on boxing day? No leftover turkey?😱

Ha ! Luckily I have my dm to provide the turkey on Boxing Day but usually I end up with a freezer full of little bags of turkey and use them until we get sick of turkey curry.

We did "Happy Birthday Jesus" one year when it was just us and young DC. It was a bit weird for us adults but the DC loved it. They understand sandwiches/crisps/sausage rolls/chocolate fingers/jelly as a celebration!

It's not very festive not to have any leftovers lying around, mind you, so you could prepare some spare pigs in blankets, roast potatoes and roast parsnips now and freeze them, to be defrosted overnight 24-25th

We used to have chilli, for years. But one year my step daughter turned up from her mum's, having not had anything to eat - expecting a roast. So I had to quickly make a roast. We've had roast ever since as I quite enjoyed it. It's a veggie roast though so not as much faff, and can be made in 90 mins max all in one tray and one saucepan as it all gets cooked together.

We're doing rib of beef! Will do lots of nice sides but will probably eschew the red cabbage/sprouts etc.

I'm having surgery on the 20th and will be out of hospital Christmas Eve at the earliest.

We are just getting guests to bring pizzas, duck spring rolls, filo prawns etc to stick in the oven and DH will but crisps and dips etc.

Christmas to me is about being together. Eat anything you like.

My Mum & Dad had chicken & chips their first Christmas living together. They've beem divorced for almost 30 years now but both say it was one of the best Christmas dinners they've ever had .

We just have a normal roast but with some more sides. I quite like cooking a roast though.

That's my kind of roast spartan 90 minutes! I take your point mrshathaway but I'm feeling rather grinch like this year so I'll have to wait until that changes before I partake in such festivities . I'm just looking forward to the lack of effort, I'm being spectacularly lazy this year.

The last couple of years we have had a more tapas style dinner, continental meats and cheeses, smoked salmon, olives, antipasti etc... will also cook some meats to pick at/have cold on Boxing Day. We prefer to graze, and play games etc... than sit for ages at the table. Will be doing the same again his year,

If I was staying at home it would be whatever’s left over from xmas eve party!

We usually have a joint but have varied it over the years (beef rib, leg of lamb, turkey, duck, goose) last year we had a vegetarian pie which was nice but the children said it wasn't Christmas without a joint so we'll be deciding which pretty soon. I wouldn't want to eat more than one roast turkey dinner, so I can see why the OP is having something different as her Christmas meal is really on Boxing Day, but for us part of the point of the Christmas meal is to have a special feast that we don't eat very often otherwise. Pizza is something we eat most weeks, so not very special, but if it's a treat for her children then why not.

We are having duck plus roasty trimmings.

We are having leg of lamb, I don't actually like turkey and confessed this to DP last year. I haven't decided on sides/ starter or pudding yet

We are doing all day buffet here (including some BBQ'd bits!) as I think refer to have time to play with the kids. We are having roast lamb on Boxing Day. Can't wait!

I grew up where turkey wasnt served at Christmas so I think I've only had it twice in 38 Christmases.

This year dh, me and 2 young dc are having rib eye steak, we go for really good steak that cost £16 per steak. Homemade chips, mushroom sauce, carrots and sauted green beans in garlic. Pudding is (shop bought) sticky toffee pudding and saltee caramel icecream.

this year we are having a bigger christmas than in the last few years so we're going more traditional. In the past we've done peking duck with all the sides and another year we had confit duck legs with roast breast. If we had been having duck again this year I would have done the confit again, it;s so easy but look's posh and tastes divine

Homemade macaroni cheese for us, ton of cheese on top and a nice pudding. Easy and quick to make and we wont miss traditiinal at all

I'm making a version of Lechon which is a Filipino roast pork dish, with various south east Asian side dishes.
I love to cook and mess about in the Kitchen so it's kinda my Christmas present to myself.

We're having Fondue as we have a roast (with lamb or beef) on boxing day when my Grandad comes. We used to have a roast when my dad was alive but he died last year so we tried to make christmas feel different.

Last year my husband cooked a bbq in the rain, this year is a fondue and we also have a big brunch breakfast too.

Some lovely ideas, I'm going to note them for future Christmas's. •neversleep• we're the same , getting really good steak. We don't eat much red meat so i figured we should do it properly for Christmas. Sorry about your Dad •eitka• , fondue is a fab idea.
