Christmas Eve Boxes - what's the point?

imaddictedtomn · 18/10/2017 22:19

My friend and I were out today and saw a place selling Christmas Eve boxes.

The woman selling them said they were very popular.

Is this a thing now?

My friend and I were of the same mind - Do DC's not get enough on Christmas Day that they have to have more stuff on Christmas Eve?

Or are we missing something?

Or are we missing something?

No, you're not. It's a bunch of consumerist bollocks and another excuse to buy your kids more stuff.

HairsprayBabe · 19/10/2017 10:30

Because it is full of sugar and shouldn't be drank every day even though it can be...

You can eat cake every day, but most people save it for special occasions.

2014newme · 19/10/2017 10:30

^^this

2014newme · 19/10/2017 10:31

Yes so why is cake not mentioned as an amazing thing to have in Xmas eve? Or coke? 'we open a box of stuff from The elves and then we snuggle up with cake'. You don't hear it. Always the mystical beverage of the hot chocolate

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 19/10/2017 10:33

But why are people so keen on hot chocolate being this amazing thing that may only be sampled on high days and holidays?

Are they? Who? Where?

Notreallyarsed · 19/10/2017 10:33

Ours doesn’t come from elves, it’s not mystical, it’s just hot chocolate and pjs, with popcorn (again not a regular thing) and a dvd. I can’t see why people care?

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 19/10/2017 10:34

You seem rather obsessed with the hot chocolate thing newme. It's just a bit of a treat that people associate with getting cosy in winter. That's it. You don't have to analyse it any more than that.

HairsprayBabe · 19/10/2017 10:34

A mug of hot chocolate is warm and comforting, a plate of cake is nice but not especially cosy.

Alittlepotofrosie · 19/10/2017 10:35

@2014newme
Yeah we get it, you don't understand why some people might like hot chocolate on Christmas eve. Good for you.

bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 19/10/2017 10:35

Because it's an occasion in itself to make it!! It's a right faff, it is not at all good for you, it rarely gets finished so all in vain anyway. But it feels special! A glass of orange squash feels special if you make it so.

As an aside I do not do Christmas eve boxes but care not at all if anyone else, rich or poor, decides it's what they think is best and magical for their children.

HairsprayBabe · 19/10/2017 10:36

These days me and DM have a bottle of Baileys in the box Xmas Grin

snowmanshoes · 19/10/2017 10:37

If you're anything like me, you always forget to buy the tiny marshmallows and squirty cream at other times of the year as there are no mince pies in your cupboard waiting for the squirty cream lol and the baileys is long gone (for the adults hot choc!)Then at Christmas you open the cupboard, you realise you have all the toppings for a super over the top hot chocolate and you decide to make them as they look better in a snowman mug! So thats why hot choclate is the perfect Christmas Eve drink.

2014newme · 19/10/2017 10:37

I am! I'm obsessed with the Xmas hot chocolate obsession! I don't get why a simple beverage is always mentioned as being so fabulous at Christmas. Rather than any other drink. Prefer a Baileys myself but there we go.

ShowOfHands · 19/10/2017 10:37

Why do people have turkey on Christmas day? It's just meat. It's cheap. Its available all year. Why? Somebody explain why other people are different to meeeeeee?

2014newme · 19/10/2017 10:38

I get why people like it but I don't get why it's such a key thing that people feel They have to mention it as being essential to their xmas.

bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 19/10/2017 10:39

Snowmanshoes I'm stealing your Christmas breakfast ideas!! We make pancakes for breakfast as a special treat so a Christmas themed one would be a lovely way to start December!!!

2014newme · 19/10/2017 10:39

Lots of people don't have turkey on Xmas day.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 19/10/2017 10:40

There is no xmas eve hot chocolate obsession. That is something you have fixated on. But you just seem to be spoiling for an argument so I'm not sure if you're putting it all on or not.

bangbingbong · 19/10/2017 10:41

Lost of people don’t have hot chocolate on Christmas Eve. Some people do, some don’t.
Crazy

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 19/10/2017 10:41

Lots of people don't have hot chocolate on xmas eve either.

MomToWedThorFriday · 19/10/2017 10:41

I get why people like it but I don't get why it's such a key thing that people feel They have to mention it as being essential to their xmas.

You don’t need to understand other people’s personal feelings if they’re not affecting you! This ‘need’ to have people think the same as you is what’s most baffling about this thread, not that people like hot chocolate. Confused

bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 19/10/2017 10:42

Same reason baileys is always mentioned..... Why is baileys such a special drink that's often mentioned at Christmas time!! I don't get it at all....

bangbingbong · 19/10/2017 10:43

Why is baileys mentioned as some fabulous Christmassy drink? I just don’t get it...

HairsprayBabe · 19/10/2017 10:43

But lots probably the majority do...

Your question is "Why do other people like something I don't" they just do...

Christmas comes at a cold dark miserable time of year, hot chocolate is warm sweet and evokes a feeling of cosiness... It is not essential to the Christmas period but it is nice to have on special occasions including Christmas Eve.

What is so hard to understand about that?
