Christmas Eve Boxes - what's the point?

184 replies

imaddictedtomn · 18/10/2017 22:19

My friend and I were out today and saw a place selling Christmas Eve boxes.

The woman selling them said they were very popular.

Is this a thing now?

My friend and I were of the same mind - Do DC's not get enough on Christmas Day that they have to have more stuff on Christmas Eve?

Or are we missing something?

Lumpy because it's all about consumerism, competitive gift giving , quantity over quality. That's why I don't make those choices. For those that do, knock yourselves out but the subject of this thread is 'Christmas eve boxes, I don't see the point' so if that offends you then this isn't the thread for you really is it? .

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 19/10/2017 11:22

I'm not offended either - why would I be? Confused

2014newme · 19/10/2017 11:24

For those calling me a snob. Yes I'm a snob. What of it? It's not news to me. Most people are snobby about something or other. Own it! 🎅

2014newme · 19/10/2017 11:25

I'm starting a Christmas snob thread.

Not seeing the irony.

Coconutspongexo · 19/10/2017 11:32

Why are you all so arsed? Focus on your own family and what you like to do over Christmas.

Someone puts their decorations up 1st December good for them? Someone puts them up Christmas Eve.. good for them.

Those throwing the term working class around says a lot more about them than the people they're talking about.

Alittlepotofrosie · 19/10/2017 11:32

@HairsprayBabe

You obviously missed the point of my post re baileys. Ie pointing out the irony in that 2014 thinks hot chocolate is shit and can't understand why people have it at christmas but baileys is perfectly ok, even though it's something people only tend to talk about at christmas.

bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 19/10/2017 11:32

There is nothing more sad in this world than being proud of thinking you are better than others. Don't own it, change it. You are not better than anyone else.

HairsprayBabe · 19/10/2017 11:35

@Alittlepotofrosie
Apologies I didn't read the sarcasm!

My general point about shitting on stuff other people like still stands though!

2014newme · 19/10/2017 11:35

@Alittlepotofrosie no, I love hot chocolate. Never said it was shit. Said I didn't understand why people go so crazy for it at xmas given it has no yuletide links. Not the same thing at all!

2014newme · 19/10/2017 11:37

@bogies that's not what a Christmas snob is 🎅🎅🎅. 🎅🎅🎅

HairsprayBabe · 19/10/2017 11:37

We only have Twiglets at Christmas, but they are available all year... do you hate that too?

2014newme · 19/10/2017 11:39

It depends, are you blethering about cosying up with a box of twiglets brought by elves? If so, yes I don't like it. Twiglets themselves are fine although I prefer the Mr bean marmite on a twig. Tastier.

bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 19/10/2017 11:39

Please explain the term to me then

lumpybumpylooloo · 19/10/2017 11:43

2014, I actually don’t care one way or the other whether people agree with Christmas Eve boxes or not, I was just pointing out that it’s a bit ‘off’ to describe it as so working class and look down on people who choose to do it. And as I already said, you are actually coming across as someone who is distinctly ‘working class’ but trying to convince yourself to that you’re somehow better that your peers. The fact that you’re happy to be described as a snob proves that to me as, in my experience, people who are middle or upper class are fairly secure in their choices and don’t feel the need to tear down others who choose to do it differently.

I don’t think that doing a Christmas Eve box goes hand in hand with buying piles of useless tat for Christmas, nor does it automatically mean that people will post pictures of piles on FB.

However, as I said, doesn’t bother me in the slightest whether you choose to do a Christmas Eve box, I’m sure you’re doing your best to make your children happy, as am I. And I am very secure in my choices about how to celebrate Christmas with my family and feel no need to try to justify it to you. If that one thing makes me working class in your eyes then so be it, but you really have no idea!!

2014newme · 19/10/2017 11:45

Lumpy do you realise this is a fun thread,?

nancy75 · 19/10/2017 11:45

The Mumsnet christmas snob buys the child a small lump of coal and hand wrings for 3 months about the expense

2014newme · 19/10/2017 11:45

Surely not a whole lump?

lumpybumpylooloo · 19/10/2017 11:46

There is nothing more sad in this world than being proud of thinking you are better than others. Don't own it, change it. You are not better than anyone else.

Very, very well said Bogies!!!

nancy75 · 19/10/2017 11:46

I did say a small lump, anything else would be frightfully common

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 19/10/2017 11:46

Can't see the irony? Look harder then :)

Our Christmas box isn't brought by elves. It's brought by me.

Personally I can't be arsed with elf stuff. I do find the Christmas Eve box handy though. It stops all the pyjamas falling on the floor.

hippyhippyshake · 19/10/2017 11:47

When my dds were young I always envisaged cosy Christmas Eves snuggled up with snacks and a DVD. Never happened! Dp and I were always wrapping until 10pm/prepping stuff/zooming to Tesco for parsnips or cranberry sauce/putting together Barbie vans etc😱 I can't actually remember what the dds did! Feel bad now....
