70s dinner party hamper

Epictantrum · 31/10/2016 21:30

Hi,
I have a hard to buy for couple, and was thinking of the new book "70s dinner party" with a hamper of 70s food.
So far I am thinking Mateus rose, cinzano, angel delight, brandysnaps, maybe a vol au vent cutter. Any other ideas for non perishable 70s items still available today?
Thanks. Feel free to steal my really odd idea (desperate, moi?)

Vesta curry

Ooh great idea.
Trifle
some of those umbrellas for drinks
Cans of skol
jar of glacier cherries

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 31/10/2016 21:41

Watching as I am going to steal this idea for my hard to buy for inlaws. Some sort of mousse mould maybe.

YabuDabbaDoo · 31/10/2016 21:42

Shop bought Swiss rolls have terrifyingly long use-by dates

Downthepubofcourse · 31/10/2016 21:45

Babycham and champagne saucers. Cherry brandy.

70s sweets (google it, you can buy jars of popping candy and love hearts and stuff)

ElzBelz · 31/10/2016 22:01

semolina?

Epictantrum · 31/10/2016 22:05

Fantastic ideas, thanks. It is going to be the most disgusting hamper in history.

Smash.

Can you still get that?

YabuDabbaDoo · 31/10/2016 22:13

I wonder whether they still sell Bird's blancmange in a little box containing sachets of different flavours? I used to have the annual job of cleaning out the store cupboards when a child and there was always a neglected box of those things.

YabuDabbaDoo · 31/10/2016 22:14

Ooh a box of Black Magic! Blerghhh

ShiningWhit · 31/10/2016 22:19

Caramella pudding - you can still get this....

Boxed lemon meringue
Prawn cocktail sauce (and wine glass?)

YabuDabbaDoo · 31/10/2016 22:19

Here you go, 58p, splash out and go crazy!

What IS that stuff?!

YabuDabbaDoo · 31/10/2016 22:20

Oh and a box kit for making cheesecake. Mmm I quite fancy one of those actually...

Gluetap · 31/10/2016 22:22

Maraschino cherries and a tin of chicken in white sauce to fill the vol au vents.

ToffeePenny · 31/10/2016 22:23

Primula cheese
Tinned hotdogs
Aspic/gélatine
Canned fruits (especially pineapple slices and peach halves)
Dream topping
Twiglets
After eight

Or buy them a fondue set...

Laineylou · 31/10/2016 22:25

New Berry Fruits (gooey jelly sweets).

elephantoverthehill · 31/10/2016 22:26

Sandwich spread, fish paste and if it is still available powdered orange juice. To be really up market find a 'party seven'.

Laineylou · 31/10/2016 22:26

Fray Bentos tinned pie?

Spookypoppypoochwoowoo · 31/10/2016 22:27

You need to include cocktail sticks so they can push cubed cheese, pineapple and pickled onions on them for a lovely snackGrin oh and don't forget the mango so they can stab them into so it looks like a hedgehog happy daysGrin

TheHiphopopotamus · 31/10/2016 22:35

This is an oddly brilliant idea. I remember seeing these hampers in catalogues when I was a kid and desperately wishing my parents would buy one Confused

Has Spam been mentioned yet? And always a Fray Bentos pie.

YabuDabbaDoo · 31/10/2016 22:44

Oh I had forgotten that catalogues sold these! Wow. Let's see if I can remember what jumped off the page...

Box of Roses
Advocaat
After Eights
Ritz crackers
Licorice comforts

Spookypoppypoochwoowoo · 31/10/2016 22:46

Wash it all down with Babycham and Advocaat (not together mind yeugh)

elephantoverthehill · 31/10/2016 22:46

Spooky mango???????????? Half a grapefruit if you want to be authentic. Grin I didn't know what a mango was until the '80s. I always wondered where mango chutney came from

Tinned ham (Oak something)
Pilchards
You can't get chunky chicken in cream in tins anymore I don't think. We had that in vol au vents and toasted sandwiches.
