Hello, does anyone know where I can get a 4.5KG ham? Local supermarkets seem no good

Also, anyone seen silver napkins or have good ideas for adult table pressies!

Thanks!!

Butcher?

Is that too obvious?

Or hunt down a big pig.

SueW · 26/11/2006 20:23

Butcher. Or wait if not needed now. There will be bigger joints in closer to Xmas

Heathcliffscathy · 26/11/2006 20:24

Sophiev73 · 26/11/2006 20:26

We had a ham yesterday for a thanksgiving dinner. We got our ham from \link{http://www.dukeshillham.co.uk/Dukeshill}. I got a whole cooked wiltshire ham - not cheap - think it cost £60-odd and that was with a discount because i ordered it at a fair.

But it was (and still is) absolutely delicious. Although it was cooked, I heated it in the over by putting about 3 cups of cider in the pan. After about 2 hours, I then glazed it with a mixture of demerrara sugar, honey, brandy and cide. And cooked for about another 30 mins

We had 8 people for dinner. We ate an enormous amount and we still have sooooooooo much left.

JoshandJamie · 26/11/2006 20:33

poop - messed up the link. here

spykid · 26/11/2006 20:41

Always cook Nigellas ham in cola on boxing day, is lush!

Heathcliffscathy · 26/11/2006 20:43

sophie it SOOOO works.

essentially it is ham boiled in coke (fullfat, proper coke please none of your own brand stuff) for a couple of hours. you can then stick some black molasses and sugar on the fat and do some fancy pants scoring and put cloves in the diamonds.

but frankly that is faff that has nothing to do with taste.

it is absolutely sensational. i have a ham connoisseur in our house and having had it last year he said yesterday 'can you get a really massive, big as you can ham this year please'.

it really really really is good.

obviously you need a good ham in the first place for it to be the height of what it can be. but i've made it with rubbish sainsburys gammon....and it was still nice (not as nice as the screechingly expensive organice one we had a christmas, but still).

x

AitchTwoOh · 26/11/2006 20:45

agree with soph and spykid. ham in coke is truly delicious.

Heathcliffscathy · 26/11/2006 20:48

aitch, are you a namechange?

do i know you by another moniker?

AitchTwoOh · 26/11/2006 21:53

dunno, sophable. i've been aitch71, theblairaitchproject, alfredaitchcock and a few other things.

Saturn74 · 26/11/2006 21:55

Aitch, you have a very super name now, IMO.

AitchTwoOh · 26/11/2006 21:57

why thankyou. i thought it up myself, with no help whatsoever from anyone whose name rhymes with mumfraybooshon.

Saturn74 · 26/11/2006 22:03

You are exceptionally clever and witty.
Jolly well done.
Sorry for the hijack, but will be trying the ham in cola recipe this week.

AitchTwoOh · 26/11/2006 22:08

it's delicious humph. just beware of keeping the cooking liquid to use as a soup base, as nigella suggests. it might be nice if used sparingly, but is disgustamundo if you use it in a oner.

Saturn74 · 26/11/2006 22:11

Okey dokey, thanks for the tip.
LOL at "disgustamundo" - is this a well-known culinary term?

spykid · 26/11/2006 23:05

Dont' like the suggested crumb topping for it though. too sweet imo

MrsMcJnr · 27/11/2006 11:45

Thanks ladies.

Good point SueW.

Sophable this one's going to be in mulled wine but I have done it before in coke and in cherry coke, yummy!

JoshandJamie - that sounds delicious! Thanks for the link. Will check it out.

Aitch - I've used the coke stock to make the red cabbage in (Nigella's idea not mine, it was nice!

What do you serve with ham?

MrsMcJnr · 27/11/2006 12:12

We're going to have parsnip & leek mash, either roast potatoes or dauphinoise pots and carrots in an orange sauce.

OP posts:
Kelly1978 · 27/11/2006 12:16

I like the sound of carrots in an orange sauce, very nice idea. We did have ham last year but I cannot remember what I did with it.

JoshandJamie · 27/11/2006 12:21

With the thanksgiving ham we just had this weekend we had:

Ham - described below
Two cheese gratin using potatoes and sweet potatoes
Maple glazed carrots
Green beans with pecans
Braised red cabbage

Pudding was cranberry upside down cake

MrsMcJnr · 27/11/2006 12:23

Yummy! could I have the recipe for the gratin? many thanks
