Does anyone have 10-14year old boys or girls? Me and dp are doing our Christmas shoeboxes for church, but our dc are 1 and 9 weeks, so no real idea what they would like! Looking for 'stocking' type presents that would fit in a toy box and be suitable for that age range?! Any and all help accepted!!
Also, if ordering online the stuff will need to be here by the 1st November!

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 12/10/2014 13:24

Izzy - costco have the pillow pets lite up ones. Do you know anyone near a costco or have a card?

nickdrakeslovechild · 12/10/2014 13:26

Clarinet9 it was these ones someone else posted about them up thread. They did take ages to get despatched, but only took a couple of weeks after, so just get them ordered sooner rather than later. I was the one with the wigs, I cant get them at the moment as LO is asleep next door but wil try to dig them out later. They are really nice cant believe they are only £3 each.

zipzap · 12/10/2014 13:28

alexaa before you get those Usborne books from them directly, have a look on the Book People - they have loads of Usborne books and the drawing ones are usually about £3 instead of £5 each. And it's around now that they add more and more titles to their stock! Sometimes they have them on a special deal too - like 3 for £10 or similar.

MrsSchadenfreude · 12/10/2014 13:31

If you can't get a 15% code to work on jojo for scooters try this site 99santi99.com/6-scooters
Bought a maxi scooter from them a couple of weeks ago and it was fine. No issues and totally legitimate.

zipzap · 12/10/2014 15:06

pink do you mind me asking if the boxes are through operation Christmas child / Samaritan's Purse?

It's just there's an interesting couple of threads on here at the moment - one that was started by someone saying 'what's wrong with occ/sp?' and then the getting very shirty with posters who pointed out why they disliked it and suggesting alternatives where the boxes/bags/gifts/aid are handed out without any strings attached; some are Christian based charities like Mary's Meals, others are things like Rotary boxes or Water Aid that aren't attached to a particular religion.

Last year there were several threads and a spokesperson from SP came on and managed to convince even more people not to donate to them which he couldn't understand.

Now there's the second active thread - where SP are threatening lots of posters on the august thread with legal action for libel even though they have only said things based on stuff that SP themselves have said (on their web site, you tube channel, reported in the press in papers like the New York Times etc)...

Apparently donations in the UK are seriously down in the last few years as more and more people (including lots of schools and church groups) are finding out how they give out their boxes and it seems that they are effectively used as rewards for people who convert to their fundamentalist evangelical style of Christianity...

If you know all this or it's a different organisation then apologies. I just thought I'd mention it because so many people are give the UK soft sell about how the organisation works, whereas when you read what they do on their main US website it's completely different (and fairly scary to a laid back UK audience!).

One of the main things that got me was the guy running it in the Uk was being paid a full time salary here of £1 million (might have been $ not £ but still it's a heck of a lot) and the same again as a full time salary for working in the organisation (linked to the Billy Graham organisation, he was bg's son) which seemed a lot of money to be taking out as a head of a charity!!

cabster · 12/10/2014 15:10

pink - tip for next year's box, I got some lovely woolly hats and gloves for 30p each from Primark in their January sale (towards the end of January when they were making their final reductions) and stashed them.

I've added little bags of Haribo to my boxes but hope they pass the date inspection - the box they came out of says the expiry date is October 2015 but the individual bags have no expiry date on! They surely can't inspect each and every packet in every shoebox...?

Also consider stashing the crap prizes out of your Xmas crackers, those little packs of playing cards are perfect for squeezing into shoeboxes!
