Unusual stocking fillers that aren't plastic tat

ObtuseAngel · 16/10/2013 13:05

The things that websites and shops tout as stocking fillers are usually nasty overpriced plastic toys that break straight away. What we need is a nice long list of things that will be cheap, useful and interesting. Obviously everyone already knows about patterned pencils and unusually shaped rubbers, but it would be good to have other stuff too.

I will contribute:

Plaque disclosing liquid/tablets. DS got a pack of these in a party bag last year and I thought WTF, but he and DD really loved using them.

Mini magnetic bookmarks, DS is a keen reader but gets very frustrated if his bookmark falls out and he looses his place so I bought him these and he loves them.

Tape measure - about a quid in B & Q

lucysmam · 02/11/2013 18:18

thanks 3bunnies, have ordered my girls a ring watch each Smile

BeCoolFucker · 02/11/2013 18:25

I got the DD's a few bits from Tiger:
Kiddie chopsticks
Velvet pencils
Mini torche keyrings
an LED torch for reading under the covers

They have lots of lovely bits if you have one near you. www.tigerstores.co.uk/

Might have to ask my mum to go to Tiger for me - love the balloon powered boats! Could get one for each DC and paint their initials on with nail varnish?

5madthings · 02/11/2013 19:05

great thread!

we have some finger torches all my lot love them.

i have bought space food for my boys in the past.

fuzzpig · 02/11/2013 21:24

Forbidden planet site looks good. There are some Adventure Time playing cards that would make a good stocking filler for a fan.

FlatCapAndAWhippet · 03/11/2013 03:14

Fab thread, marking spot!

crumpet · 03/11/2013 03:27

EustaciaVye · 03/11/2013 07:54

knickers
travel alarm clock
small purse
choc coins Grin
whoopee cushion
notepad
colouring pencils
sequin art
bubble bath

Last year magnifying glass was popular,

fuzzpig · 03/11/2013 08:37

Crumpet what is that link of? Only comes up as a very blurred picture (am on iPod) although I think I can see the WWF logo?

nextphase · 03/11/2013 08:50

Fuzzpig - Animal skin pattern plasters - but unavailable atm

crumpet · 03/11/2013 08:56

Oops. They were plasters with animals/ animal skins on- I think they are on amazon too. Ds has loved choosing whether to cover a scrape with snakeskin or an orangutan!

Here's another go, hopefully with better pictures shop.wwf.org.uk/product_info.php?products_id=162

Marking place - for ideas

fuzzpig · 03/11/2013 09:01

Ah that makes sense thanks. Children do seem to really like plasters for some reason don't they!

TinyDynamite · 03/11/2013 09:11

Shamelessly marking place for ideas which I probably won't get around to purchasing until Dec. 22!

diddybobster · 03/11/2013 10:37

Great ideas here. Please could you post the link to the mini trebuchet? I have searched online but only find a US company selling the kits - is that the one? Thanks

lucysmam · 03/11/2013 11:01

ooh, plasters are a good idea, my girls are each having a new dolly & between me and dp's mum we're putting together a little changing bag each Grin . poundland had some moshi ones in when we went in yesterday Smile

hermioneweasley · 03/11/2013 13:02

My £2 brass compass for DS has arrived. It's lovely, he'll be chuffed to bits with it

DaftApeth · 03/11/2013 14:09

Lots trebuchets on amazon, diddy.

here

NorbertDentressangle · 03/11/2013 14:27

I'd like to get DS (9yo) a small wallet to go in his stocking as occasionally he needs something to put money in but, other than pockets, doesn't have anything.

Has anyone seen one suitable please? They all seem to be grown mens ones, too girlie or too babyish.

fuzzpig · 03/11/2013 14:33

What's he into Norbert? There's lots on Amazon that are character based, I've got a Looney Tunes one that DH got me and I've seen stuff like Hong Kong Phooey. There's Adventure Time ones too if he watches that?

If he supports a big football team you can probably get one in Sports and Soccer

NorbertDentressangle · 03/11/2013 16:11

He's into football, football and , er , football but unfortunately not a team that you can get a wallet with their name/emblem on. He's not into any 'character' games, TV progs etc (unless you count Top Gear!)

Something fairly neutral, or surfy maybe?

fuzzpig · 03/11/2013 16:12

For surfy ones, TK Maxx might be worth a look. I've seen O'Neill/Animal/Quiksilver type wallets in there.

fuzzpig · 03/11/2013 16:13

Although there's always The Stig...

Baileyscoffeeandcampfires · 03/11/2013 16:15

There's a stig top gear wallet on eBay for £5 plus £2.50 post - item no 290996675465
