How much is your turkey costing?

I am buying for our whole (my side) family Christmas dinner, and have been Shock at the cost of turkeys. Admittedly, I would only buy a free-range one, so have to expect to pay a premium, but I had no idea turkey was such an expensive bird compared to other meats.

How much is yours costing and how many are you hoping to feed?

i got a turkey crown today for £4.20 reduced from £32 in the co op Grin

will cook it tonight and freeze it in slices and use it for pre xmas sandwiches when friends/family pop in to see ds

We are having stuffed chicken breasts wrapped in bacon :-). Hopefully it will be cheaper than the 60 quid turkey last year!

I've bought £70 Kelly Bronze, delivered to to door etc... and it still ends up tasting like a tough old bird,(despite butter muslin, bacon, cooking slowly) I had a £15 frozen one from Tesco last year and it was as good as anything else I've tasted. Doing the same this year.

£20. It's one of the fancy Heston Blumenthal ones from Waitrose last year, we bought it half price after Christmas and it's been in the freezer ever since.

It's vac-packed so should be OK.

Forgot to say ours will be feeding 7 + plenty of leftovers expected for salads and lunches. It's a crown.

£47 Bronze Turkey from a nice local free range farm where they all run about outside. That is for a 4.5kg one, so the smallest and cheapest.

Wow - that's the sort of price I'm looking at. I'm considering getting one that they recommend for 6 when there'll actually be 8 of us. Given that my dad will do his usual ham, and we'll have stacks of roasties, veg and pigs-in-blankets, I'm hoping we can get away with a bit less.

I had the boned stuffed breast joint for £9.99 in Aldi last weekend and it was very nice. It said it serves 10-12, I'd dispute the 12 but it would easilly stretch to 10. It had bacon on top and was as nice as M&S ones I've had which were 4 times the price.

Not cooking Christmas Dinner this year but last time I bought one it was free range from local butcher and cost about £50. It was one of their smaller ones but served 8 adults + 3 kids for Christmas dinner with plenty leftover for Boxing Day.

Tesco frozen finest bronze turkey £20 --actually cost me nothing as I paid with Clubcard vouchers- states it serves 6, but I will be feeding 5 adults 3 kids.

we'll probably go for something cheap from aldi. on a budget food wise atm, there's only the 4 of us and the kids are just as happy with veg, roast potatoes, sausages and lots of stuffing. am having 2 other christmas dinners at mil's and then my mums, frugal christmas at home then stuff our faces at others expense Wink

Sounds like there are options out there - almost tempted to go for a nice chicken instead but think I'd be shouted down!

Waitrose frozen turkey crown, free range, £20 from Ocado. Seems like a decent price but wouldn't want to pay any more.

Supporting our local butcher on this one so getting a 5kg bird at £40. Can't stand the way supermarkets are killing the high street and local businesses.

Skiffen Where are you. We went to pick up a tree at our local farm today (we are middle of nowhere) and they were doing free range turkeys. 9lb for £23. Enough for eight people, so fresh they were still draining! (Apologies to those who aren't country folk)!

Dawn - the SW. It was a farm shop I went to today. They were pricing at just under £10/kilo and they suggested a 5kg bird for our party.

Local farm here.

£6.30 per kilo. Have ordered 7kilo tp feed about 7/8 , hoping for leftovers too.

In the past I have always bought frozen, but I guess they are intensively reared
? This isn't as pricey as I expected, and my conscience will be a little clearer...
