LAST CHANCE! Closes today! MN Christmas appeal 2012 - Nominations and Donations thread

We've all seen the mini chocolate snowmen in the shops and the cries for all Christmas-based threads to be moved out of AIBU to the Christmas topic Grin - so that can only mean one thing! It's time for the MN Christmas Appeal.
Little bit of history for those who are new to the whole idea: in the past, Mumsnetters offered to donate gifts to other Mumsnetters in need over Christmas. And you also nominated Mumsnetters to receive these gifts. Each year, a particularly saintly Mumsnetter volunteered to match up the donors with the nominees and organise a mass posting of presents.

Two years ago, we felt the Appeal had grown so large that it was too much for one person to co-ordinate - so we moved it onto the MNHQ to-do list and this will be our third year.

Here's how it works.
You have until Monday 22 October to nominate a fellow MNetter who you think has gone over and above, offered you some lovely advice, might need a little help or someone who is generally an all round luffly person.

You can nominate here

You also have until Monday 22 October to pledge your donation for a fellow MNetter. Vouchers are easier to match but we have had all sorts in the past from Christmas trees to hampers and re-gifted items. Nothing is too small.

You can donate here

We then contact all of those nominated by the 29th October and ask them for their address and age/sex of their DC, this information will need to be back to us by Friday 9 November

Nominees and donors will then be matched and we will send those who donated, their matched nominees address by Friday 23 November so that gifts can be sent well before the final Christmas post. Parcels are addressed to the MNetter of the House (unless otherwise stated) to try to maintain anonymity.

This whole process is anonymous, we do not pass over RL or Talk names.

If you would like to get a gift for someone specific then it is better to arrange it with them directly. As much as we would love to facilitate all of your Christmas wishes, we simply don't have the brain power capacity

Donors and nominees are given a number to quote to say thank you to one another following the gifts being sent out.

Any questions about the frankly terribly confusing process, please do ask.

May we be the first to wish you a very Merry Christmas Grin

I have just donated. Really want to nominate, but so many people have been helpful to me, its difficult to just pick one. and so many people are having a bad time, its hard to know who to pick there either :-(

Will keep thinking.....

devientenigma · 18/10/2012 17:37

Help, I want to donate. After being nominated last year, it was such a pleasure. However I can't afford financially much and I don't know what to get. I am also unable to leave the house much having been in house arrest for over 2 year with my disabled son who doesn't attend school etc and doesn't do anything socially.

Ideas would be great, TIA x

devientenigma · 18/10/2012 17:50

Iv'e just came across a post similar to mine and the advice on there clicked, so now know what to get Grin

ZombTEE · 18/10/2012 20:24

I almost missed the deadline!

Perhaps it would be better if this wasn't in the Christmas topic...which I have hidden.

I only knew about it because someone mentioned it elsewhere.

And I just read up before posting and saw this has been mentioned already. Grin

I am one of those people who stumble upon this thread at the last minute every year - I tend to meander through favourite topics and will use the last 15 minutes button too.

I have just nominated for the first time ever. And donated.

DawnOfTheDee · 20/10/2012 17:11

Done and done!

NicholasTeakozy · 20/10/2012 17:28

I've nominated and am donating. This is a wonderful idea.

BuffyFairy · 20/10/2012 17:43

Nominated and donated. Love this idea!

SilveryMoon · 20/10/2012 17:56

I have just nominated 2 of my very favourite Mners. They would know who they are if they saw this.
I have never seen this thread before and always wondered how we nominate!
I have in the past received some lovely packages through this appeal which have brought me to tears.
I am so pleased to be able to something small for someone else (hopes they get chosen to receive)

I'd really like to donate, but no way would I be able to afford to do it to the level that I have received.
I know the OP says nothing is too small, but really not sure.
Not long to decide.......

stickyj · 20/10/2012 18:01

I have been on here for years and years. Mr Sticky has put up with all my musings about Xmas, helping fellow mumsnetters and lighting candles in our house for people that need them.

I have explained about the candle map we use and now just accepts when I mention that I am lighting a candle for

Years ago, I sent him off, with a large parcel that my children had helped me assemble, to an address we were given. He sat outside the house for ages, as he didn't just want to leave it on the doorstep. Hours later, the person came back and he just handed it over.

Thanks Mr Sticky for believing in me and Mumsnet.

We do good, we do and we are mice people. I love Christmas and I know how hard this year will be for lots of people.

My Dad has gone, three weeks ago and i miss him.

Every time i light candles at home, I really of think of everyone that I can remember on here, from the early days when we all waited for "Pink Peter" to little Allidh. My son is 14 on Monday and he always made sure we had candles burning, every night, for all "your people/children" Mum, he lit them when I had gone to bed early and he didn't like the fact they had gone out.

Of anyone needs help for themselves of their children, just a little help, to make Christmas special, please just ask. Ask and those of us that can, will help. x

stickyj · 20/10/2012 18:03

We are not mice people Blush, I have just grown my nails...WE ARE NICE PEOPLE!!!!

FTRsMammy · 20/10/2012 18:32

I only joined MN last week ( and I'm leafy obsessed!) and already I've read threads that have made me laugh loudly and weep quietly, I've read threads that have brought back memories of my own and threads that have made me so very grateful for all that I have. I take as a great honour to nominate and to be able to donate to someone this year.

Stickyj you've just made me cry with your lovely words Smile your boy sounds so sweet and thoughtful

FTRsMammy · 20/10/2012 18:33

Grrrr already not leafy! Bloody stupid autocorrect ruining sentiment

< stomps off muttering about about stupid iPhone>

slatternlymother · 20/10/2012 19:15

Have donated. Really, really hope I can help someone! What kinds of vouchers are best? Are M&S/Sainsburys all good?

Viperidae · 20/10/2012 23:47

Have donated too, glad to help

JenFrankenstein · 21/10/2012 11:34

I've only just seen this as I don't use Active Convos but have nominated and now thinking about what to donate.
