LAST CHANCE! Closes today! MN Christmas appeal 2012 - Nominations and Donations thread

We've all seen the mini chocolate snowmen in the shops and the cries for all Christmas-based threads to be moved out of AIBU to the Christmas topic Grin - so that can only mean one thing! It's time for the MN Christmas Appeal.
Little bit of history for those who are new to the whole idea: in the past, Mumsnetters offered to donate gifts to other Mumsnetters in need over Christmas. And you also nominated Mumsnetters to receive these gifts. Each year, a particularly saintly Mumsnetter volunteered to match up the donors with the nominees and organise a mass posting of presents.

Two years ago, we felt the Appeal had grown so large that it was too much for one person to co-ordinate - so we moved it onto the MNHQ to-do list and this will be our third year.

Here's how it works.
You have until Monday 22 October to nominate a fellow MNetter who you think has gone over and above, offered you some lovely advice, might need a little help or someone who is generally an all round luffly person.

You can nominate here

You also have until Monday 22 October to pledge your donation for a fellow MNetter. Vouchers are easier to match but we have had all sorts in the past from Christmas trees to hampers and re-gifted items. Nothing is too small.

You can donate here

We then contact all of those nominated by the 29th October and ask them for their address and age/sex of their DC, this information will need to be back to us by Friday 9 November

Nominees and donors will then be matched and we will send those who donated, their matched nominees address by Friday 23 November so that gifts can be sent well before the final Christmas post. Parcels are addressed to the MNetter of the House (unless otherwise stated) to try to maintain anonymity.

This whole process is anonymous, we do not pass over RL or Talk names.

If you would like to get a gift for someone specific then it is better to arrange it with them directly. As much as we would love to facilitate all of your Christmas wishes, we simply don't have the brain power capacity

Donors and nominees are given a number to quote to say thank you to one another following the gifts being sent out.

Any questions about the frankly terribly confusing process, please do ask.

May we be the first to wish you a very Merry Christmas Grin

Well that's it....you don't know who it's going to - it might be someone who would love a Tesco vouchers (as I would have done a few years ago) or someone who might like a luxury Jo Malone bubble bath

Tricksy! :) Perhaps a vouchers and something lux is the way to go.......?

PiggeryJokery · 21/10/2012 20:50

Thanks for the spam (on the naff sentiments thread)! I have been meaning to donate, hadn't even seen the appeal was open and have squeaked in with hours to spare!

PurpleCrazyHorse · 21/10/2012 20:55

Just seen the message in Chat, always wondered how to get involved. Not nominated as I can never remember anyone's MN name, barely remember family names!! However, definitely looking forward to buying for someone.

Roll on Christmas :)

PurpleCrazyHorse · 21/10/2012 20:55

Oh.. was AIBU, not chat!

fryingpantoface · 21/10/2012 21:13

I was gonna give high street vouchers. Do you think I should.give something else?

skyebluezombie · 21/10/2012 21:15

Ive donated a voucher that can be used in certain food outlets. i figured that way it is a treat for the whole family.

catgirl1976 · 21/10/2012 21:22

I thought high st vouchhers too fryingpan

You can spend them in so many different places so whoever got them would get loads of choice

I think they will be a good way to go

NormaStanleyFletcher · 21/10/2012 21:23

TwistyBraStrap · 21/10/2012 21:57

Have nominated and donated Smile

UndeadPixie · 21/10/2012 22:33

I'm glad I didn't miss this again, last year I did Blush I will donate and am having a browse of amazon now to see what pops up and gives me inspiration! :)

bionicmummy · 21/10/2012 23:04

I was nominated last year and didn't check my notifications in time. I was both pleased and gutted :(

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 21/10/2012 23:15

Winegless got me on the low carb thread so I've offered to donate. First year of doing this! It's worth it just for the typos alone Grin

MamaCross · 21/10/2012 23:30

Nominated and donated. Can't really afford to but WANT to because I miss the thread every year and then feel bad. No idea what I will send yet, but will be something to bring a smile :)
So happy to have just got in before the deadline this year :)

Boomerwang · 22/10/2012 08:51

I would like to take part but I have no idea who to nominate. I wish I'd spotted this earlier as I'd rather nominate someone who needs a gift rather than someone I see a lot on the forum.

Also not sure how to donate, because I'm not well off myself and I live in Sweden so postage costs could be high. I'm thinking of some kind of internet voucher? A useful one I mean. And not one you can simply download for yourself. Can I donate cash? It's not very Christmassy I suppose. It'd be no good making a thread about it as it won't be very anonymous then will it :(

I'll put my thinking cap on. I'm sure I have plenty of useful stuff, particularly for babies.

RebeccaMumsnet · 22/10/2012 09:55

@BigBroomstickBIWI

I appreciate that it must take a lot of effort to run the Christmas appeal,[massive understatement emoticon] but you do seem to be closing it very early - and still there are people who haven't seen it. I really think you need to leave this open for a little longer, and definitely put it into 'chat' with a sticky.

Hi BIWI,

We have put it in the latest box and in the Newsletter, it has been stickied for two weeks and to give us time to sort it all out, we have to close it today.
This year the response has been terrifying amazing.

We are going to give it one last push now...

I think this is a lovely idea. I have donated!

Even a little something will make a big difference I'm sure :)

Sparklingbrook · 22/10/2012 10:00

Can someone who has bought vouchers PM me and suggest a value. Ta.

Don't want to look ostentatious but don't want to look like a pauper RebeccaMumsnet. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 22/10/2012 10:08

Do you have to put the amount of the voucher in the donation box on the donation form?

RebeccaMumsnet · 22/10/2012 10:30

No you don't.
It does help us if you can, but it's not essential.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 22/10/2012 10:34

Right. Got it. Will go and donate. Ta.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 22/10/2012 11:06

Oi, Rebecca, where's my badge? Wink

Glad to hear about the terrifyingly amazing response.

Makes me even gladder I am not organising Grin
