So... when do you put YOUR Christmas tree up?

DH and I are not really into Christmas and only really have the tree for DS. Last year ours went up in early December, and to be honest I got fed up with looking at it by the time Christmas came. Our tree always comes down on New Years Day - always.

The last couple of years as DS (now 8) has got older, it has been fun decorating the tree together and become somewhat of a ritual in our little family. We have always had Christmas just the three of us as our family is quite fragmented and spread out (physically and emotionally) Hmm

SOmeone on my Facebook wrote theirs is going up this weekend. I was thinking of doing it on the 16th when they break up from school which is when I feel the "holiday" really starts. What do you all think?

Tree will go up 10th or maybe 17th if I can get away with it.

Will do other decorations and lights etc on 10th/11th

Kids will get their tiny little fake tree in their room this weekend - beside the Playmobil advent calendar

johnworf · 30/11/2011 11:51

Ours goes up around the 17th. I'd prefer to put I up on Xmas eve but the children won't wait that long.

I've taken it down on new years day always cos I'm fed up wih it by then.

KWL51 · 30/11/2011 11:58

saturday or sunday before xmas, we go and buy the tree and decorate together, have a takeaway or bung some pizza in the oven. Im a bit of a bah humbugger when it comes to decorations, and dislike having them up for too long, so usually come down on 2nd jan as well.

FreakoidOrganisoid · 30/11/2011 12:04

I'm quite excited about putting mine up this year but I just know the kittens are going to destroy it so am trying to hold out. DS wants it up for his birthday though (10th) so will probably put it up next week sometime, and spend the rest of december putting stuff back on it!

fridascruffs · 30/11/2011 12:10

Buying one on Friday or Satuday, putting it up at the weekend because it costs £30 at least to buy and i want my bloody money's worth! My only rule is, it's got to be December- then it can go up.

fridascruffs · 30/11/2011 12:11

I take it down on the 12th day of Christmas.

TooMuchCaffeine · 30/11/2011 12:13

Hmm looks like around the 17th is the general consensus here. I think I will go with the weekend before Christmas. That's the weekend DS breaks up from school anyway. Then the decorations will come down on New Year's Eve when DS goes to bed - because he always sulks when we take them down on New Year's day Wink

Yesterday and yes everyone did laugh at me for putting it up in November Blush

Ungratefulchild · 30/11/2011 12:16

Goes up a week before Christmas and comes down on 12th night

TooMuchCaffeine · 30/11/2011 12:19

Having said that this year we have an advent calendar with pockets and yesterday I went to Hawkins Bazaar and bought lots of little presents to put in it, so DS has a little gift or chocolate to open every day until 24th. SO the "piece de resistance" could be that on 24th we all decorate the tree in readiness for Christmas day. Not sure I'd get away with that though Hmm

Normally the weekend of/after my birthday (on the 10th) - I love the tree being part of my birthday treat!

bigbadbarry · 30/11/2011 13:29

It always used to be the weekend before Christmas, down on January 6th. I can't bear it hanging about for weeks either. DD3 was born on December 20th, though, so our new tradition (she will be 2 this year) is no tree before her birthday. Even better :)

BlueCat2010 · 30/11/2011 13:33

Our work one is being put up as we speak - DS is here so him and the staff are having a whale of a time doing it!

We normally have two at home, one in the font room and one in the dining room, that we put up the weekend beofre Christmas. I doubt we'll get away with leaving it so late this year as DS is well in the Christmas mood now!

wolfhound · 30/11/2011 13:39

weekend school finishes

FantasticVoyage · 30/11/2011 13:46

Weekend before Christmas.

Reason being that a big part of Christmas is the feeling of excitement that it's going to happen. We like building up to the day the decorations go up as much as we like building up to the day itself.

GrateHits · 30/11/2011 13:48

Weekend before Christmas here too. Although last year the bottom third of the tree was totally bald by Christmas. Must remember to water it more often this year Smile

hardcolin · 30/11/2011 13:51

Normally our tree goes up on the Dec 1st but we decorated it last weekend (we are away this coming weekend and the next, and I can't get around to do it during the week)

The tree lights haven't been switched on though...only to test that they work.

The tree and anything christmas related is packed away on the NYD. I don't bother with '12 days of' or 12th night. Christmas is past..new year, new start etc Smile
Works for me!

Abgirl · 30/11/2011 13:53

10th, as we have family doing their christmas visit on 11th, and both DSs have their christmas shows later that week. It's fake as I can't bear finding pine needles in the carpets for months weeks after. It stays up normally until Jan 2nd as I don't like it being up once I've gone back to work - but this year I'm off until 9th so it may last a bit longer :)

TotallyKerplunked · 30/11/2011 13:54

PFB in the house (now 12 weeks old), DH bought and decorated a live tree on 11th November Confused. A huge floor to ceiling tree that is so big we have had to put the dining table into storage (so where we are going to eat x-mas dinner I have no idea...)

duckdodgers · 30/11/2011 14:46

Ours (fake) has been up for a week or so now but I only got round to finishing it yesterday. All our other decorations are done to, including the garden!

IWantAnotherBaby · 30/11/2011 15:10

Tonight!! The tree and a few other bits will go up tonight (when I've tidied enough space for it!) and the children and I will start decorating it tomorrow. Love having it up for as long as possible and it seems silly to spend so much money on decorations etc and only have them up for a few days. But then I love the whole Christmassy thing...

MissCalamity · 30/11/2011 15:29

On or after DS's birthday which is the 15th of December - I'll be making that a rule from now on.

Before DS it always varied, was around the 6/7th December the year he was due, just in case but prior to that it was always about the 20th.

Normally comes down a few days before the 6th as well, but I always seem to miss a bit of tinsel around the clock or a mirror Hmm

irregularegular · 30/11/2011 15:33

Either the weekend before Christmas or possibly the one before that, depending on when Christmas falls in the week.

FirstNoelle · 30/11/2011 15:36

If I had a fake tree I'd put it up tomorrow, but as we love real trees (just love the smell!) it'll probably be in a fortnight's time.

Pocket1 · 30/11/2011 15:47

Up the first weekend of December (but its going up tomorrow as i'm off work) and comes down on 6 Jan. we just love Christmas.
