Can't think what to get him as his 'main' present this year so looking for ideas Smile

He would go nuts for as DS but me and DH have decided we don't want him to have one just yet...but am stuck for other ideas!

Have looked at the Imaginext sets but he doesn't really do role-play/imaginative play so not sure he would really enjoy it (DS2 otoh would adore them!) He gets bored with lego once DH has built whatever it was meant to be.

Thanks for the castle tips - i think i fancy the Melissa & Doug ones over the ELC ones so far.

Simps - thanks i will look out for those next time I'm in the big Tescos.

CDMforever · 20/10/2011 16:20

For christmas that is!

zipzap · 20/10/2011 16:26

They had Melissa and doug castles in tkmaxx the other day for £20 if anyone is interested in them, also their farmyard/barn.

We gave ds1 a camera when he was 4 for Christmas - self preservation on my part as he was forever swiping mine. We got him one of the real ones that was on half price offer. Meant that there was another camera in the family if dh wanted one to borrow. Ds has looked after it really well and still uses it to take loads of photos. A few duff ones in there, lots of things that I would never think to take pix of (we went to a wedding and there were loads of the carpets Hmm) but plenty of good ones in there too.

BadRoly · 20/10/2011 18:04

zipzap was it a child camera or a normal camera? I know she is a dd rather than a ds but we are thinking of a camera for her too...

YourCallIsImportant · 20/10/2011 18:11

I got DS the Playmobil pyramid yesterday. Half price in Argos.

zipzap · 20/10/2011 19:25

badroly sorry I obviously wasn't very clear, when I said real I meant a grown up one rather than a kiddie one.

It was a basic Fuji one that cost about £45 in jessops and was half price. I think there are already deals around that are being advertised on tv for similar ones, possibly pc world and currys. Bet there will be lots more in the next few weeks!

Only thing about it that I would change is that it takes AA batteries which I thought would be good rather than him forgetting to recharge it. But it eats them up like nobodies business so I wish in hindsight that I had paid a bit more for one that had it's own battery that you could recharge and then got a spare cheap one from 7dayshop and trained him to be good at switching them and asking to recharge when needed.

Have a look at models that are about £100, decide which you think are nice and simple - and then track them until the price drops to half price. Might even go lower for a special deal but sometimes you have to jump in or risk paying full price.

Other thing to think of is if you have a compact camera, it can be worth getting one the same make as yours as you may well find the batteries are interchangeable and the controls are similar making it easier to explain!

Mine's getting lots of smaller bits I imagine. Don't really want him to have a DS or Wii yet, he's quite happy to play with my iPhone if really needed on long car journeys (not against them btw - they're just expensive)

Anything and everything relating to series 2 of the Clone Wars Force Attax set, Bakugan or new parts for his scalextrix I guess.

Dinosaurhunter · 20/10/2011 19:36

Haven't heard anyone mention hero factory yet , my son is obsessed by it and wants all the baddies for Xmas ( they are bigger than goodies ! )

ceebeegeebies · 20/10/2011 20:57

Thanks for all the advice Smile

He does like Hero Factory but he has that many figures (Ben 10, Toy Story, Spiderman etc) that I am not sure he really needs any more.

As for what he likes, it is difficult because he has the attention span of a flea and flits from one thing to another so doesn't really get 'stuck in' to anything iyswim. That is why I find it so hard to buy for him!!

He has just started building random things with his duplo lego and little lego so maybe some more of that.

He also loves football and has asked for a Barcelona kit so I guess they are quite expensive!

I don't know Hero Factory - though DS1 has mentioned it to me - must keep up, lol! off to google now.

Ds has his birthday (5th) at christmas. He IS getting a ds although I'm not sure its the rioght thing to get - his uncle is getting him it.

From us he is getting some small lego cars 2 things - dh wants him to get the lego hogwarts castle - I think not, it has about 2000 pieces!

He wants the imaginext t rex and I think my mum is getting him that for his birthday and a transformer for his xmas.

He's also getting the big finn mcmissile car for his birthday.

Might get him membership to somewhere from us as he is getting so much from everyone else...

ceebeegeebies · 21/10/2011 10:02

Mmmm, left, some good ideas there.

He did see the Imaginext t-rex on telly the other day and said he wanted it and he does seem quite keen on dinosaurs at the moment. Also, when all the Cars 2 stuff was in the shops in the summer, he said he wanted the Finn McMissile car - I had forgotten about that.

We've got DS Lego City Harbour. He was very specific about this one. Cost a bloody fortune for a box of lego but if you get it at ELC you can 20% if you buy their magazine. There's a voucher in there.

noyouhavehadawee · 22/10/2011 21:49

We went to smyths today and ds who is 5 next month really wants that 19.99 tank of the advert though dd who is 9 doesnt think we should get him one as she said its violent and he will run away and join te army - anyway i think we may get him one for his birthday next month but he has also expressed great interest in the imaginext batcave but its £45 and sorry but i thought it looked a bit shoyte, however if i can pick one up cheap/ 2nd hand id be tempted. Also resistign the ds though he does play mario kart on the wii a lot.

leftmydignityatthedoor · 22/10/2011 22:12

Ds has the old style imaginect batcave- he loves it.

MurderBloodstabsandgore · 24/10/2011 09:07

I am impressed with the quality of the imaginext we have. Also the bits are big enough that DS can play with it near the baby and she can't eat any of it, as opposed to lego and playmo that is banished to his bedroom.

altinkum - That is my ds' christmas list too, exactly the same. I am sick of him taking mine and dps I phone, so the I touch was the perfect choice for us.

SummerRain · 24/10/2011 11:17

ds1 had wanted a bike but has changed his mind and is now asking for 'A vortex gun (some new nerf gun he saw on tv) and a ben 10 alarm clock'. He also sproradically requests a whack a mole game Hmm

I've told my mother to get him something transformers related as he's mad about them atm and will be buying him a few secondhand ds games as well.

smokinaces · 24/10/2011 11:21

My five year old ds is getting a ds, but a second hand one. He is desperate but a. Can't afford new and b. Seems silly when he is only five.

He is also getting a new two wheel scooter, and a chelsea football top as he is desperate for one!

mousyfledermaus · 24/10/2011 11:22

ds will get some lego and a sledge.
a couple of books and dvds.

inneedofchocolate · 24/10/2011 11:28

What about the new skylanders game for the wii?
Lego games
Nerf gun
Mini bop it
Remote control car or something similar?

Just a few suggestions......

inneedofchocolate · 24/10/2011 11:31

Just thought, I got my ds the guinness world record book last year when he was 5 and he absolutely loved it. Will definitely be getting the new one this year.

verybusyspider · 24/10/2011 12:20

we're getting/asking family for puzzles and board games - chess, draughts, guess who etc... more playmobil for his castle (horses I think), a Octonauts GUP (his little brothers are having one so they are getting one each - sounds young for him but he loves imaginative play)
No more lego for time being - bit over run!
He had a scooter for his birthday and just got second hand bike (trying to make most of good weather)
Books - can't have enough books imo, we need more factual type ones and he's just getting into reading

Main present from us is a Cars 2 Scaletrix track (shared between him, ds2 and dh) www.scalextric.com/shop/sets/tv-and-films/scalextric-start-disneypixar-cars-2-c1273/

JKSLtd · 24/10/2011 13:10

I just bought a compendium games set from amazon - excellent value, pretty sturdy & the advantage of just one box :)
