Camera for DD (6)

I wanted to put this in the technology section... but there isn't one!

Anyway, DD wants a camera of her own very badly. For the past year or so she has borrowed the rest of the family's iPhones whenever she can and they always come back with her artistic endeavours - photos and films. I don't want to get her an iPod Touch because I don't want her to have a games console. What can I get her that is as easy to use and is limited to photos and films?

this? it does have games but linked to the camera use i think iyswim?

TheHouseofMirth · 20/11/2010 14:06

Why not just give her a normal digital camera? Most of them have video capability. DS has had one since he was 3 and hasn't broken it yet (and he is not the world's most careful child). The picture quality of "children's" cameras is pretty grim and you can get a good quality camera for a similar price. I'd look for one with as little delay as posible between pressing the button and it taking the picture and buy an extra big memory card if she's doing a lot of video.

The Kiddizoom things are good for kids, but the picture quality isn't very good. My DD got one at around 4, she is nearly 7 now and were getting her a cheap digital camera from asda or toys r us, as she wants to be able to print them out and put them in albums.

Bonsoir · 20/11/2010 14:25

Have you got a specific recommendation, TheHouseofMirth?

My DD is 8yo and we have been looking at this camera which has good reviews and is quite sturdy. Or the Canon

I did not want to get a normal camera as we had one where the objective zoomed in and out when switched on. When it got dropped, the objective was damaged and it was then useless.

Bonsoir · 20/11/2010 14:36

Ooh thanks MmeLindt - that's just what I was hoping for, someone who had already done the research for me! I quite agree, I want tough as it will undoubtedly take a few knocks, despite DD being basically a careful child.

MandM direct currently have a Tinkerbelle digital camera on offer.

Dd1 is getting a Samsung Go Gear which has an mp3 player, camera and video recorder but no games.

LadyInPink · 20/11/2010 14:42

MmeLindt - we have dropped two camera's now and love the sound of the sturdy camera you wrote about above (not the canon one), but couldn't see a price, do you know how much it is?

TIA Smile

MmeLindt · 20/11/2010 14:45

DD is impressed and has promised NOT to drive over the camera

MmeLindt · 20/11/2010 14:45

LadyinPink
It is about CHF 200 here, not sure in UK but am looking

tulpe · 20/11/2010 14:47

DS2 has http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/6614952/Fuji-Finepix-J12-8-2-Megapixel-Digital-Camera/Product.html the Fujifilm finepix J12 He is 6 now but has had since he was 4. We bought it on the basis that it gave much better picture quality than children's cameras.

We also bought a little wrap around case for it. It has been through all the rigors that a 4-6 year old child can put it through and it still takes great photos.

MmeLindt · 20/11/2010 14:49

Prices on Amazon

Am thinking of getting it in UK as cheaper.

LadyInPink · 20/11/2010 14:54

Thankyou so much MmeLindt for taking the time to find that out for me - much appreciated! P.S love the pic's of your DD making cakes, so cute (sorry to be nosey)

Smile
MmeLindt · 20/11/2010 14:56

Found it cheaper here in Switzerland so will be ordering it here.

Thanks for the compliment, they are (mostly) lovely kids.

FrameyMcFrame · 20/11/2010 14:59

I like the look of the olympus tough, it's here for £99

MmeLindt · 20/11/2010 15:02

Framey
Are you sure that is a legit company? It is incredibly cheap.

MmeLindt · 20/11/2010 15:04

Ah, ignore me. I was looking at a different model.

FrameyMcFrame · 20/11/2010 15:52

oh I don't know, just came up when I googled it.
Is it the older model?
It's still waterproof and drop proof and probably a hell of a lot better picture quality than the kiddiezoom thing.

FrameyMcFrame · 20/11/2010 15:54

I think DD will like the idea of taking underwater photos! :)

MmeLindt · 20/11/2010 19:14

Don't know about the kiddiezoom one, but DD had a "kids camera" and it was rubbish. Real one much better idea.
