Hi all,
I wonder if anyone is up.
My 3.5 year old son has woken tonight saying his willy is sore, I asked if I could look and it's swollen in the middle (it's almost round in the middle) I will definitely ring the GP in the morning but is it worth ringing 111 at this time of night?
Thanks

I’m not sure how many answers you’ll get since it’s so late, and I’m afraid I don’t have experience with male children, but if this were an adult male, we would definitely be calling 111 and I imagine some of the same concerns might hold true (if the swelling is so severe that it looks “round,” then I would worry about lack of blood flow and that it might be stopping him from being able to use his urethra). I’m so sorry OP and hope your little one feels better soon.

Thank you both. He is pretty upset with it and asked for calpol so I think I'll give them a ring to be on the safe side and if they say to wait till the morning I will.

If he can get back to sleep I would wait until morning maybe give some Calpol. If he is in a lot of I'd ring 111.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 27/10/2023 03:35

Can he empty his bladder? Is the swelling preventing him from peeing?
does he have any signs of infection, fever redness along with the pain?

Cupsoftea20 · 27/10/2023 03:39

No fever and it's not red, just like a little balloon in the middle of that makes sense. He has had a wee in his nappy while asleep but as I said he woke up saying it hurts. He's fallen back asleep now thankfully.

Take him to A&E first thing. If it's presenting like you've described then it needs to be looked at properly. There's no guarantee of a gp appointment and then it'll be the weekend.

Cupsoftea20 · 27/10/2023 04:00

That's very true. I will reassess first thing and I don't plan on sleeping to be honest just so I can keep an eye on how he is.

If you are awake I would call 111 now and see what they say . There is always a delay before someone calls you back anyway.

They will be able to advise you on best course of action.
Hope your boy feels better soon.

My son had this but older, when he wees ( normally does he spray a bit. It's todo with a tight foreskin. He may need antibiotics, if it keeps happening ( as it did for my son) he will need to be circumcised

SD1978 · 27/10/2023 04:19

I'd go A&E- and Im usually the he last one, ever to suggest that! Swelling on the Willy should be looked at, there is always a concern regarding circulation, or a possible paraphamosis- although unlikely with where the swelling is! But seriously- 111, at least, tonight- you don't want to muck about with it!

sensitile · 27/10/2023 06:26

Defo go to the gp in the morning, mine ended up in hospital for 4 days with this. He couldn't wee in the end as it hurt so much.

NeunundneunzigHorseBallonz · 27/10/2023 06:28

Take him in. If it’s a stricture it could affect the circulation. Poor little guy.

BlueRidgeMountain · 27/10/2023 06:35

Could be balanitis, which would likely need antibiotics. DS1 had it a couple of times. I’d be ringing 111 now - even if it is that, it’s pretty sore and he’d try to withhold his wee, so I’d be wanting him seen sooner rather than later.

Rhi86 · 27/10/2023 06:37

Yep, agree that this sounds like balanitis which my 2 year old also had recently. We went to out of hours doctor and got him some antibiotics. It got better within 24 hours thankfully! Looked so sore, poor thing!

Cupsoftea20 · 27/10/2023 07:33

I'm just waiting for a doctor to ring me. My GP also opens in 30 minutes and I'll see if they will see him quicker if not I'm going straight to A&E.
He is awake, having done a wee and is playing, no fever. Just anxiously waiting and unsure what the best course of action is now, perhaps I'll just go straight to the hospital after what you all have suggested. Thank you again.

Did you manage to call the doctor OP?

Linguist80 · 27/10/2023 08:48

Fucidin is your friend! I used to keep on hand for any soreness

Cupsoftea20 · 27/10/2023 09:22

We've seen the doctor and she's said it's Balanitis. Thank you so much for your support and advice this morning and last night 💐
