Fishy smell from 10 year boy’s penis

wobblymum1 · 20/07/2023 14:10

Any help gratefully received!
my DS10 has a strong fishy smell coming from his penis. He’s at that shy stage now so won’t let me have a proper look but says it’s not sore or itchy. Just a bit “wet” he says. We go on holiday tomorrow so no time for a dr visit but could Pop to a pharmacy if anyone has a recommend?
thank you!!

You'll have to find time for a Dr visit

TeaKitten · 20/07/2023 14:14

I agree, contact a doctor. Might not be sore yet but if that changes while you are on holiday it will be rubbish.

Babadook76 · 20/07/2023 14:24

Sounds like he’s got an infected penis. Do you really need telling that a doctors appointment for a young child with an infection in his genitals is more important than a holiday? Someone is likely going to have to look at his genitals and prescribe antibiotics. A pharmacist will be able to do neither

Knittingflapjack · 20/07/2023 14:48

Sounds like balanitis, a common infection in boys especially if the haven’t been cleaning properly. Get an appointment with a doctor or nurse and they will usually give you an antibiotic cream.

Balanitis

Read about balanitis, which is where the head of the penis is swollen and sore. Find out about the symptoms, causes, treatments and when to get medical help.

Nope, just difficult as GP already said it’s not an emergency and next appt they have isn’t for 7 days🤷‍♀️And feels quite extreme to cancel a holiday because he has a small infection is all.

No dr appointments for a week (by which time
we’ll be back) but going to try the pharmacy in case they’ll give him a cream we can take away.

@wobblymum1 Maybe call around different surgeries.

FannyFifer · 20/07/2023 15:39

Phone the Dr back, you say that your small child has an infected penis, it is sore & odorous & that he more than likely needs an antibiotic. They can't possibly say to wait a week, that's ridiculous.
Nurses can also prescribe so at the very least they need to fit u in with practice nurse.

WolfFoxHare · 20/07/2023 15:42

There are a number of private GP services that might offer same day appointments and do private prescriptions. You could try one of those? It’s usually not too expensive (ie probably under £100) though I appreciate that is way out of reach for many.

Sadly too much for me to afford and I don’t think there’s one near here but it’s a good suggestion, thank you so much

The appt is with the prescribing nurse but not for a week, they said as it’s just the smell and he has no fever and he’s not in any pain it’s not an emergency and they’ve given me the earliest slot they can.

Can you call 111, out of hours gp appointment for tonight?

Nap1983 · 20/07/2023 15:51

You’ll probably find this is a hygiene thing. As a nurse who deals with a lot of males you wouldn’t believe the amount who either don’t know how or don’t bother to was their bits properly… the smell is horrific 🤮

Autumnsoon · 20/07/2023 15:52

Tell your doctor you need an appointment, your going on holiDay tomorrow, otherwise you will have to go to A andE …what if he’s pushed something up it..
you can’t go away op without sorting this out
or 111

cocunut · 20/07/2023 15:53

This sounds like a troll to me

Tittyfilarious81 · 20/07/2023 15:53

@wobblymum1 do you have a walk in center near by ?

Flipin · 20/07/2023 15:53

Call 111 - emphasise the strong odour. They should be able to help you sort something out.

Autumnsoon · 20/07/2023 15:53

Has he actually given it a good wash with soap and water …see if that gets rid of smell….if smell is all it is

FoodFann · 20/07/2023 15:53

The lie and tell them it hurts!

Obviously not much use now if it’s too expensive but a lot of private GP services do online consultations so you don’t need to be nearby. Just for future reference.

kwetu · 20/07/2023 15:57

If it's a pool holiday the chlorine in the pool and fresh air will more than likely sort it, assuming it's still not sore I can't see that waiting a week till you're back from holiday will make that much difference. Good luck and happy holidays.

FartSock5000 · 20/07/2023 15:59

Take him to the pharmacy and get advice there. Could also be thrush and that's something they can give you topical cream for right away.

You can only go to the surgery you're registered with, can't you?

Don't be so ridiculous. If the OP does that, she'll be taking away an appointment from somebody who may genuinely be in pain!

That’s exactly what she said on the phone! Said far more Likely it just needs a good clean and some sudocreme
