Broncolitus and rsv diagnosis on 4 month old

Hi all, handhold if possible. My 4 month old is currently in hospital with diagnosed rsv and bronolcoitus.

She has had her oxygen levels checked and temperature and she is fine for all that. She is just very congested with a very nasty cough.

I am of course feeling awful. I just wish we could wrap them up in cotton wool but we can't Sad

Anyone have any stories to share with how long it takes to get over this and that everything will be ok?

Oh I’m so sorry. It’s awful but she is in the right place. Is she on oxygen?

my little one has the same at 4 months, day 4-7 for us were the worst. Our little one was in just under a week- lots of congestion meant she needed to be on oxygen for longer and to be fair I preferred being in hospital where I knew I could sleep for an hour (they come in to
check every hour if you’re on oxygen so try to get as much rest as you can) and the machine would wake me if her stats went low. Vs being at home and worrying about her still breathing throughout the night.

have they used the nebuliser?

Sounds very similar to my DD age then. She is just over 4 months. It is absolutely terrifying as they are so tiny and precious. Her cough is awful.
Sorry to hear you have been through same thing. It's especially high this year i here.

They have not used the nebuliser or even offered it to us. Doctors have checked her and said they are happy with her breathing so it's not something they are offering her. She has had all the bodily checks and she is fine.

I may ask to stay in another night, the wards seem quite quiet here and it is giving me peace of mind she's in the right place.

Unsure on what day we are in with her! She has been unwell for a week she got the cough last Sunday morning and had it since then. It tends to be worse for her first thing in the morning and evening. We are just worried it may turn into something worse as she is so young Sad

It's our first baby and we are nervous first time parents as it is!

@Justisme no she is not on oxygen! Haven't offered it to her as her breathing is appearing to be ok but I'm not massively convinced

I pushed to stay that extra night too, to be fair I would’ve happily stayed until congestion had cleared up but it got a bit much after a week..

if she’s being monitored (a little clip on her toe or finger) you will be able too see what her oxygen levels are like. If I remember correctly high 90s is good, low 90s while awake 90/91 isn’t good and the machine would beep. Although I was good when asleep low 90s is ok as the body /heart rate slows down.

The cough is horrible but they do get over it. It takes some time, I think 3/4 weeks in total but it does go.

is she drinking well?

My son had this at 9 weeks old, by the sounds of things your LO is doing really well! She's in the best place. Sending hugs 💐

All 4 of my kids had this and stayed in hospital for around a week. All healthy adults now.

My 4 week old has just had this, we were in hospital 2 nights. He's still coughing and a bit congested a week on. You're in the right place and that Drs and nurses deal with this all the time so they'll know what to do.

Nebulisers don’t work on bronchiolitis, the only thing that we can do to help is oxygen if they need it, feeding support and sometimes breathing support.

It’s bronch season and very common, hospitals are full of bronch babies every winter. Hopefully your little one starts to feel better soon. The cough can last a while, it’s a very distinctive cough.

Thank you SO much everyone for your reassuring messages. I am so sorry to hear little ones younger than ours have has this awful virus however I am also slightly relieved it is not just us. Nurses did say to me they see this all the time.

She didn't need oxygen but she's at home now as was discharged this morning. Still congested so we are using saline drops on her.

She is feeding well (we have to feed her little and often) and going through wet nappies. That's why she was discharged.

It is so so scary as they are just so precious.

I think it depends on the severity and what the issues are, my daughters cough came later but she was so congested. So the hospital tried suction which just produced more mucus and she went back to being blocked within minutes. So the hospital suggested a nebuliser which helped our baby tremendously. The hospital saw this and used it on her twice a day.

It’s so much better than suctioning but would bring up or clear up the congestion for a few hours and I have bought one for home usage for when little one gets congested. It allows her to sleep a tiny bit better with a blocked nose.

I hope you’re feeling ok, we found the discharge daunting but stay close to her and remember you know your baby best.

Thank you @Justisme the cough is just awful and it pains me to see her in so much pain. I just hope the docs wouldn't sign her off if they were worried. She seems to be breathing normally now but still a bit congested.

How do you stay sane? Sad

My little 7 week old has a nasty cough. He has no temperature and ive been to the GP twice this week but they basically said ride it out! Do you mind me asking what made you take her in? He has a coughing fit and makes some funny noises, he then goes a little wheezy. His nose isn't running but he is definitely blocked up! No temperature and feeding fine.

My son was in hospital with bronchiolitis for just under a week. The fact that she doesn’t need any oxygen is good. I think the said that after day 5 you usually start to see an improvement.

My DD was in with it at 10 weeks. She had 4 nights in hospital and she was in an oxygen box thing. I remember she kept slipping down the bed!

She had no lasting effects.

Just wanted to send sympathy. My son had it until he was 1. In the hospital for a few nights every 2 months. Scary at times. But he did grow out of it. He's six now. No issues.

@Cookiedough123 she had a temp on Monday this week of 38 and since then her cough has got worse and she was coughing so bad she could hardly breathe. I also heard slight wheezing and she was feeding less with less nappies.

Sorry to hear about your babe. If you are worried don't hesitate especially when it comes to babies. Ring 111 to be sure.

She started her cough Sunday last week so we are a week this Sunday.

However her temperature started Monday evening late (Tuesday morning) this week so doctors think it started then so really we are only on day 3.

Thanks he definitely doesn't have a temp I have checked it multiple times a day! Very congested today. Yes will ring 111 if I get more concerned.

@Justisme no, Gaf is right.
I presume she is a paediatric nurse. From the way she's written. As am I. It's all about oxygen and feeding support. Occasionally some babies will sound a bit wheezy. But not normally with bronc.

Suctioning only helps if they are very snotty.
