Broncolitus and rsv diagnosis on 4 month old

Hi all, handhold if possible. My 4 month old is currently in hospital with diagnosed rsv and bronolcoitus.

She has had her oxygen levels checked and temperature and she is fine for all that. She is just very congested with a very nasty cough.

I am of course feeling awful. I just wish we could wrap them up in cotton wool but we can't Sad

Anyone have any stories to share with how long it takes to get over this and that everything will be ok?

My 7 week old grandaughter has it, she's been in hospital since Tuesday and on icu since weds. They've taken her off oxygen today and just moved her back onto the ward tonight so no idea when she will be discharged yet. It's scary , and horrible seeing them so poorly

RSV is the virus that causes Bronchiolitis. If her oxygen levels are good then that’s very positive. Is she being kept in?

WorriedandScared93 · 02/12/2022 22:36

@Cookiedough123 That's good night temp. That may mean no sign of infection! When mine had the temp that was the start of her infection.

It could be postnatal drip?

@ZealAndArdour thanks! I do hope so. We were actually discharged this morning! She wasn't put on oxygen once as her levels were good. Just very bad cough and temperature. Wheezing and sneezing. We have her home now and just plenty of cuddles, small but often feeds (otherwise she throws the whole lot up).

Probably one of the hardest weeks of my life this week. It is so scary.
I am thankful she's on the mend and can sympathise of the others in the same position.

@TimeToFlyNow so sorry to hear. But she is in best place, that's what I was told! If she is off oxygen that's very positive. 7 weeks is so tiny i am sure that's why they are keeping her in. We were told we could have gone home the day we went in but they kept her overnight just because she was so young.

Thank you and yours too. It's a scary time, it's this time of year. @Cookiedough123 apparently it's going around everywhere.

@Justisme it doesn’t matter if you agree with me, there is no evidence to suggest nebs work with bronch. Unless you are talking about a saline neb which can help to wet secretions enough to suction them. But saline drops can also do this. This is different from a neb used for a wheeze, which doesn’t work for bronchiolitis.

@Toddlerteaplease I am yes!

WorriedandScared93 · 03/12/2022 02:20

@gaf we are using a saline spray and it seems to be helping.

Do you at all know if coughing up more mucus/ runny nose means this could potentially be the healing stage of Broncolitus?

Thank you so much for your help x

@gaf if it didn’t matter you wouldn’t have responded? My initial point was with your broad and unfounded comments / advice to the op on nebulisers.

saline nebulisers can help manage the symptoms of bronchiolitis in young children, especially at the coughing stage. It helps loosen thick mucus to allow them to cough it up. Our daughter had a lot of congestion but the dr did say she may not have had a bad cough (like a lot of RSV/ bronchiolitis babies do) bcos we managed her symptoms (in the hospital) with the nebuliser. She would cough up the thin mucus very easily without it becoming this hacking cough

www.blf.org.uk/support-for-you/nebulisers/who-can-benefit

like I said. It does depend on the individual.

ok we digress! Op, the cough part is horrible and will stay the longest- and yes! It’s your baby trying to bring up the mucus. Keep the humidifier on if you have one and it really is a matter of time now

youve gone through the night and I always find those the worst

Thank you for your help @Justisme
