Children constantly poorly- setting of my raging anxiety!

Wondering if I’m alone in this… I have two children who seem to be constantly poorly with the usual coughs, colds, ear infections, occasional sickness bug etc alongside some things like constipation, UTIs, eczema, skin flare ups. This has been ongoing over their childhoods (eldest now 6) but has really ramped up recently and perhaps made more stressful with the worries around PCR tests etc. They seem to spike a temperature at the slightest thing which can go on for days.

I’m absolutely frazzled. From sleep deprivation, juggling work and of course the worry about them being ok, I just feel my anxiety spiralling. My head is telling me it’s my fault they’re always ill. Perhaps I haven’t fed them well enough, built up their immune systems, not taken care of them well enough so they keep getting ill!

Anyone else have children who seem to be constantly ill at the moment? Recently it’s the temps, coughs, colds that are battering us. What can I do to help?

Can I join you!? I have a DS who's nearly 9 and every winter we are hit with cold type viruses that go on all winter. As one cold ends, another starts. DS brings them home with him from school and as he recovers from them, me and DH are left with blocked sinuses and coughs that go on all winter. It's like we're allergic to DS! I worry it's my fault for not insisting hard enough that he eats fruit & veg. He will eat an apple a day but hates oranges. He has a Bassetts vitamin every day but it's probably not enough.
I dread every winter. But it's now happening in the summer months too and I'm not sure if it's hay fever or just viruses. It's endless!

I know the feeling DD (6) is having a tough time at the min. Since going back to school in September she's had 3 colds, an ear infection and currently unwell with a chesty cough. Lots of high temps. She's only been in for 3 of the 7 weeks of half term !

Lemonademoney · 28/10/2022 17:30

Yes! I feel like we have caught everything in the last twelve months! My middle son has been particularly affected and has been classed as having post viral fatigue as we are now nearly a year into the start of his I’ll health (could honestly cry at how badly he has been affected). I’m averaging illness every other week and the whole family had hand foot and mouth a few weeks ago! When will it bloody end!!

Awful. I remember hand, foot & mouth and it was worse than chicken pox. DS ended up in hospital.
Wishing you all well soon.

Thank you! Honestly what a bloody year for illness… really would like to think that’s it but we are careering towards norovirus season so I might as well get the sick buckets ready 😫

Good luck! We are still in cold territory..one finishes, another starts. DS kicks them off quite rapidly but me and DH are left with lingering coughs and blocked sinuses that go on all winter. I swear we are allergic to DS!!

YukoandHiro · 08/11/2022 13:12

We just had the cold that resulted in sinus infections too. It's left me with terrible toothache!
Luckily no noro yet but I can't be far off.
We've just moved house and I honestly feel like i couldn't cope with the stress of a bad illness on top of living in a city of boxes

Ethelaggiestar · 15/11/2022 09:51

Can I join you all please? I have two children, youngest is constantly poorly and has antibiotics pretty much every month! Am so stressed by it and my anxiety so is through the roof thinking there is something wrong with him!

BooseysMom · 15/11/2022 12:23

@YukoandHiro how you all feeling now? I've left work early and am in bed with heavy period pain and I'm still coughing from the last virus. It always gets worse when the period starts. I remember my DM had the same problem. She used to take Mucron tablets every day when she hit a certain age so maybe that's what this is and not necessarily a virus. I can't take sinus tablets as I'm on blood pressure meds so looks like I'm stuck with it.

@Ethelaggiestar Welcome to the poorly crowd!! Your situation sounds tough. Sending you a hug.

DS started complaining of stomach pain yesterday and I thought no, please, not noro!! It's rife at his school.

Ethelaggiestar · 15/11/2022 12:48

Thank you! I keep thinking things will get better but they never seem to. Youngest now has a poorly leg so sure he’s getting something else - just after hand foot and mouth and a chest infection 🙄

ecnatsid · 15/11/2022 12:51

I have a 3 and 1 year old and it's the same. I'm having to take a lot of time off work, I've just caught tonsilitis and hand foot and mouth from them Sad

YukoandHiro · 15/11/2022 13:35

Excellent timing @BooseysMom - I have both kids off with another chest infection today. Awful. Eldest is staying out of hospital by the skin of her teeth so far with high doses of inhaler. Not looking forward to tonight.

BooseysMom · 15/11/2022 16:01

@Ethelaggiestar
@ecnatsid
it all seems to come at once doesn't it?!. I remember hand, foot & mouth and it was hideous. Worse than chicken pox. Sending you get well hugs.

@YukoandHiro sounds horrendous. I hope you get through this and manage to stay out of hospital. Let us know how you get on later..

YukoandHiro · 15/11/2022 16:04

Agree with those saying HFM is worse than the pox. My eldest has had it twice and my toddler once so I'm really hoping that's done for us. And we got chicken pox done in April. What a year!

That's a right year you've had! At least they're all done now, hopefully. I'm not sure if DS has had the pox. When the pre-school had an outbreak he was sent home as they found one tiny spot! He had no fevers and was bouncing off the walls the whole week!

Greentomatoes21 · 18/11/2022 06:50

I remember our one year old's finger nails peeling off thanks to HFM. It was horrific - a nasty illness. 😭

Ethelaggiestar · 18/11/2022 10:39

We have scarlet fever doing the rounds now too - seems like every illness going is back this winter!

YukoandHiro · 18/11/2022 19:57

The eldest has shaken off the respiratory virus without needing an a&e visit for steroids for the first time in ages - hurrah! But the day I sent her back to school, nursery called at 2pm as the toddler has diaoreah

BooseysMom · 20/11/2022 15:58

@YukoandHiro no way! Good news about not needing a&e though. Hope your toddler gets well soon. DS has been complaining of stomach pain all week and 2 of his class mates were sick at school so it's only a matter of time ..

YukoandHiro · 21/11/2022 12:24

Woke this morning to eldest covered in hives (viral I think) and still coughing. Sent her to school but she is tired and if not massively recovered tomorrow I'll take her to the GP.
So anxious that maybe she's now developed pneumonia.
Urgh! I hate hate hate all this.
Luckily my youngest is a little bit more robust so far.

BooseysMom · 21/11/2022 13:17

@YukoandHiro oh no sorry to hear that. I remember DS had hives after a course of penicillin so he's allergic apparently. I took him to a&e as the rash was all over him. He was ok, it was a viral rash. Good luck x

YukoandHiro · 21/11/2022 13:21

My daughter is prone to viral hives as she has multiple allergies (we carry an epi pen for her). It's often hard to know if/when it's serious or not.
But I'm going to get her checked tomorrow if she doesn't seem back to her old self!

YukoandHiro · 22/11/2022 16:28

Arrrgghhh the toddler now has a fever too. I am so absolutely utterly furious. Every other week is like this. It never ends.

oh no! I’m so sorry. If it’s any consolation my children all appear to be tag teaming the illness, just as I get one back to school another falls ill
