Five year old says hurts when wees but no UTI??

Hi. Am new to Mumsnet.

My daughter has had two uti infections and had antibiotics to get rid. Ultrasound scan was normal. Last urine sample was clear when dipped and normal after being cultured, but daughter still says it hurts when she wees - not every wee but the majority. She is absolutely fine in herself, no other symptoms, drinks plenty (only water). Any ideas please? Can’t help worrying.

Thank you for replying. It doesn’t look sore, no itching and she isn’t complaining about any soreness - just only hurts when wees. Will take another urine sample in tomorrow. Can’t help worrying.

Are they fully emptying their bladder? Hard to know without a bladder scanner test?

I don’t understand why she has had her first uti at five and hasn’t had any issues before, and if it is down to not emptying bladder properly, wouldn’t it have happened before now? Really appreciate your replies - thank you.

If it does turn out to be another uti (or maybe the last didn’t properly go, though she had two full lots of antibiotics back to back as first cefelexin (sp) didn’t get rid as still hurt when had a wee), that would be third uti in a space of 3-4 months??

I could of wrote your post a few months ago so wanted to offer assurance. My dd had a UTI never had one before. Had antibiotics. Never cleared shown on wee sample. Had antibiotics. Then started coming back clear but still going wee all time etc. Got referred to peadatrician ( got a brilliant doctor) but after about four to six weeks of loads of fluid before referral is not symptomatic and hasn't been for months. I have had loads of utis. The antibiotics clears it and the majority of pain but sometimes it's almost like pressure rather than pain. Bladder can't hold as much kind of feeling. And that just has to be all flushed out over time. Ibrufen I've been told can help eliminate inflammation left quicker but I didn't know this then for my dd so that may speed it up.

And it wouldn't be a new UTI I wouldn't think. It's just not clearing properly if it comes back a UTI again and the doctor will probably try a different antibiotics.

Are they drinking enough? Are they constipated at all? Are they avoiding acidic and fizzy drinks? Have you banned bubble bath? If washing hair in the bath, are they doing it at the end?

Thank you. Am so so worried. I read that having lots of antibiotics can cause thrush in little ones but there are no symptoms to suggest that apart from hurts when wees.

Daisy1245 - so the pain just stopped? When you say loads of fluid, do you mean little one drank more so flushed away more (if that makes sense).

Sent a urine sample in on Monday (routine 1 week after last antibiotic) which was clear. Maybe not another uti? Could it be inflammation/irritation from all the antibiotics?

Or same uti?? She had two lots of different antibiotics (first for 10 days and second for 7 days). Surely those should have got rid of it.

Drinks lots throughout the day and I shower her now since first uti.

Following your thread. My son has had episodes of UTIs and one episode of urosepsis. He was prescribed cefalexin as a preventative does for around 6 months and wakes up almost every night with a really hard willy and writhing around obviously feeling uncomfortable. He hasn't slept through once in his life due to this happening every night.. I can't help but think something is going on.. obviously I can see more as he's a little boy but I can't help wonder if it is all linked to the previous UTI's or antibiotic use.
I don't mind giving ibuprofen but not sure how I stand giving it every single night..
Paediatrician has checked everything and his anatomy is fine.. he does have a minir kidney reflux but he's fine in the day so I'm unsure what's going on at night..

Going to try and eliminate squash, bubble bath and acidic foods as some posters have suggested.

Please let me know if you get any answers.

@popcorn100 Yes loads of fluid. She won't like it short term as will give her more pressure. But will flush it through for her. If urine is clear now give it at least four weeks. Never give her any squash with blackcurrant in it. Never use bubble bath and you can get a soap substitute from your gp to rule out irritants.
@Peachee has bladder spasms ever been suggested? Imo preventative antibiotics are useless. Disclaimer I am not a doctor just had more utis than most people have had hot dinners 😂

Could she have been fiddling/scratching down there and managed to tear or cut something, or even then urethra itself? That'd make urination sting.

Just an idea, but could be with researching D-Mannose (disclaimer, no idea if it is suitable for children). I used to get frequent UTIs (from sex, food triggers or cycling) and taking this before and after triggers has reduced the frequency.

My dd had a problem like this and it was apparently due to immature kidneys. I felt awful as I thought she must not be wiping properly. She only ever drank water and the occasional glass of milk, so it wasn't a drink trigger. That isn't helpful in terms of a cure, I just wanted to share that she did grow out of it.

I thought my 4 year old dd had a UTI but it was threadworms. Also eating a lot of oranges gives her stinging wee. Just mentioning in case but it doesn't sound the same.

I've had lots of kidney issues and surgeries myself so I know how awful UTIs are so she has my sympathy. I've had tests come back as clear but I've definitely had a UTI at the time as my wee looked like weak tea, it hurt and I was forever going to the toilet but the gp took a lot of convincing! I hope you get it sorted.

She had an ultrasound which was clear/normal so am hoping that would have picked up anything with kidneys.

She drinks about 1.2/5 litres of water a day but will definitely increase to flush and empty bladder.

She doesn’t touch or rub down there and never complains of any itching or discomfort (doesn’t n day either). Will look into D-Mannose too.

Threadworms did cross my mind but no other symptoms and can’t see anything. She sleeps fine through night.

Peachee - poor little thing. It’s just awful. You feel so helpless.

Thank you. I thought threadworms itch at night. Can you have them without symptoms as in just hurts when wees??

Will update when spoken to doctor tomorrow.

Following as mine complained of wees hurting about 3 months ago- 3 urine tests all clear but pain hadn't gone then- has since.

My DD 6 has just been referred to a paediatric urologist for continual UTI ecoli infections.
The antibiotics appear to work but the ecoli infection comes straight back .
She isn’t in any discomfort but there is a strong fishy smell.
I’ve come to realise that her UTI is linked to her poo! I mean if she doesn’t poo often enough, she is guaranteed to get an infection.
She also holds onto her wee too long - her knickers are wet and so she rushes to the toilet
She drinks lots of water ,and plenty of other liquid to keep up variety.
I also give her probiotics every day.
I am trying to manage it best I can before her scan.

Evening all. Thanks again for replies yesterday.

Just thought would update...another urine sample today - dip test came back normal but they have still sent it off to be cultured so will see what the outcome is next week.

Hi.

Doctor said they didn’t send it off in the end to be cultured, as dip test normal. Advised to wait 4 weeks to see if settles?? Daughter still says it hurts when wees.

Will contact them for a referral?? What do you think?

My 3 Year old DD is going through exactly the same at the moment, shes just finished her 4th lot of antibiotics and doing the 2 week wait to send another sample off to be cultured... My GP has advised that if there is still signs of infection after this then we will be referred to Paediatrics for scans etc.

My DD started with a bad water infection, literally screaming in pain, given a generic antibiotic... 5 days later the GP rings and says she needs a different type of antibiotic... finished that course and she seemed fine, no screaming after toiletting etc so i honestly had a massive shock when the GP called and said she needs more antibiotics! Ive taught my DD to wipe properly, and not hold it in too long...

Has your DD tried weeing in the bath? Only reason i mention it is my GP says its the best way to get them to relax in warm water and properly empty their bladder.

Fingers crossed for us both!
