13 yr old with high temp and very stiff neck

But she doesn’t have (yet) rash or aversion to lights. She has been sick one evening yesterday, she’s very hot, sleepy and dizzy. She also says her eyes feel stiff.
I will obviously keep checking for meningitis symptoms but wonder if the stiff neck can be attributable to a milder condition. When I google fever and stiff neck, only meningitis is mentioned.

Rash is a later symptom. Get her seen ASAP.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 27/07/2019 15:41

Get her some medical attention pronto. I wouldn't be watching and waiting with this one .

Trenzalor · 27/07/2019 15:41

They’d rather see her and it’s nothing than see her too late.

InglouriousBasterd · 27/07/2019 15:41

Definitely get her seen ASAP, rash appears when it’s a long way along.

mumsie8 · 27/07/2019 15:42

I would call 111 for advice. Rash doesn't always present straight away with meningitis and she has other worrying symptoms associated with it. May be nothing may be everything but i'd still call and get her checked over.

VirginiaWolfHall · 27/07/2019 15:42

I don’t think you can be too cautious in this instance, op.
I would call 111 or get her seen to ASAP.

Sexnotgender · 27/07/2019 15:42

I’d definitely get her checked. Better safe than sorry. Can you phone OOH or 111?

PurpleDaisies · 27/07/2019 15:42

You need to seek medical advice right now.

concernedforthefuture · 27/07/2019 15:43

Get her seen straightaway (go to A&E, don't wait for 111) . Rash only appears once the infection has really taken hold and other symptoms are there.
It may just be a virus but no-one will turn you away and better to be safe than sorry.

BoreOfWhabylon · 27/07/2019 15:44

Meningitis does not necessarily present with a rash. Her symptoms are worrying. Get her seen asap.

PurpleDaisies · 27/07/2019 15:44

www.nhs.uk/conditions/meningitis/

Read this.

Nhs categorically states “do not wait for a rash”.

SinkGirl · 27/07/2019 15:44

Honestly, call 111 right now although I suspect they’ll have an ambulance out to you right away so you could just call 999

Rash generally does come later and can appear and spread very quickly. Get them seen now. Don’t wait.

WishUponAStar88 · 27/07/2019 15:45

A&E now. I hope everything’s ok but definitely get seen.

DaanSaaf · 27/07/2019 15:46

A&E

Smiler88 · 27/07/2019 15:46

Take her to and e now, meningitis can develop rapidly in a very short space of time. Dont wait until it could be too late.

Wildorchidz · 27/07/2019 15:46

She already has symptoms of what may be meningitis.

DCIRozHuntley · 27/07/2019 15:47

A&E don't fuck about with those symptoms.

camelfinger · 27/07/2019 15:47

A&E.

TheFairyCaravan · 27/07/2019 15:48

Get off MN and take her to A&E. She needs seeing now! Stop messing and go,

Soubriquet · 27/07/2019 15:49

I didn’t have a rash and still had meningitis

I lost all my hearing in one ear and 60% in the other.

Don’t wait

SinkGirl · 27/07/2019 16:06

Yep, my advice to call 111 was an error really, probably because of MN’s attitude to going to A&E. You really need to take them to A&E now or call 999 if you can’t get there yourself. I know it can be really hard to figure out what to do in the moment, but this is what A&E is for - potential medical emergencies and serious accidents. It doesn’t get much more serious than meningitis. Don’t take any risks here. They will be glad you took them in, and just relieved if it’s not meningitis rather than critical.

MoistOwlette · 27/07/2019 16:08

GO. NOW.

MissRabbitNeedsAHoliday · 27/07/2019 16:10

Please take her to A & E op, it may be nothing serious and I hope its not, but im sure the doctors would rather see her Asap with those symptoms that not.

PrincessC0nsuela · 27/07/2019 16:15

If it's meningitis the rash is a later symptom usually when septicaemia sets in... get to a and e right now

Skang · 27/07/2019 16:17

What everyone else said. It's not worth the risk.
