Toddler had lump on neck, very worried!!

My toddler has had a lump on her neck for around a year now that has gradually been getting bigger. Right now it's around the size of a grape! GP told me several times it was just a swollen lymph node but I was never satisfied with this. I then took her to a different GP who referred her for an ultrasound. Ultrasound results came back yesterday and I'm really worried. The consultant radiographer has told our GP to refer her on to ENT for further investigations as he wasn't sure what it was. My GP told me in the radiographer report he noted here appeared to be blood flow to the mass and that it didn't appear to be a cyst. GP has advised me they will most likely want CT or MRI done along with a biopsy. The referral has been put through as urgent and she will been seen in the next few weeks. Has anyone had a similar experience? What was the outcome? Am I worried for nothing? I genuinely feel sick with worry at this stage.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi
Our son has developed a swollen lymph node for around 6 or so weeks. Have seen the GP twice who now want to see him a third time but aren't sure what to do next. They have mentioned ultrasound / bloods / pediatrician. It's not got bigger yet but they seem so reluctant to do anything. We are considering offering to pay for any tests etc as we want to know if there is an underlying cause. I hope all is ok.

It's so worrying! My daughters has slowly grown from around the size of a pea to the size of a grape and it took me to eventually see another GP in our practice before anything was done. If your not happy get a second opinion, could u maybe ask to see another GP at your practice? If not just be persistent I think our instincts as mums are always spot on x

We have seen two separate GPs. When we go back in August we have decided we will ask for at the least an ultrasound and if they aren't forthcoming then we will offer to pay for it if they give us a referral. It's not ideal but we are fortunate enough to be able to pay for it.

I'm in Northern Ireland I don't know if it's the same where you are but my son needed an ultrasound of his stomach last year which we would have had to wait 16 weeks on through the nhs my GP referred us to a private hospital nearby and they done the ultrasound the following day, we had to fund it but we got answers very quickly and were then able to be referred on a lot quicker than we would have been. I hope everything goes well for you both x

It's similar in Somerset, England. The ironic thing is the private hospitals that do them also do a lot of the NHS patients to hit waiting times. The only difference is the wait time. As you can see from the picture I posted it's not a huge swelling but enough to concern us. Take care

My son has a lump in the exact same place!! He is 13 months old and we have been to the drs today for the third time. Today we have found out his has an ear infection and has been given antibiotics for it but I am passed myself with worry in case this is not the problem. Our dr wants to see us again in 2 weeks to double check. Please keep us updated of your progress? Thank you hope your little one gets sorted asap

Hi ladies

I just wanted to ask what was the outcome for the lumps you found on the neck? My child has one too and I’m searching for answers?

Many thanks and I hope all is well
Dani

Hi,

Any update on any of your children? My daughter has a lump on her neck too roughly marble sized but has no infection and feeling absolutely fine.

Thanks

Sunnyjac · 18/02/2021 23:09

In response to those asking for updates my daughter had a pea sized lump on her neck. We were referred to ENT and fortunately our specialist was very good. He diagnosed atypical tuberculosis, which can be picked up from bacteria in soil (she was three, probably ate some!) and can infect any organ in the body, in her case a lymph node in her neck. Not to be confused with TB you get in your lungs, which is infectious. The lump grew to about the size of a large grape eventually splitting the skin open and oozing pus. The pus was contagious so she had to have a dressing that completely covered it. Eventually it drained and cleared up, she’s left with a tiny fading scar. Took about six months start to finish and although looked scary was really nothing to worry about.

@DaniA82 and @CarrieA123 do either of you have any updates? Just noticed your posts are recent. My little boy (13months) has exactly as you described - I will include a photo. He’s had a blood test today and now awaiting a referral to paediatrician.

He is so active and has great appetite etc but it’s hard not to worry isn’t it.

I went to my GP and he did bloods which all came back completely normal. He said it feels like a swollen gland which can some times take awhile in some kids to go down after an infection. My daughter has a temp the end of January (but nothing else) so he said it may be left over from that 🤷🏼‍♀️. He said if it hasn’t disappeared shortly to return to him again. It still hasn’t disappeared so I will be phoning him again this week. My girl is in the best of form though, sleeping, eating and full of energy so I’m less worried than I originally was. With the bloods being clear and her overall well-being good. I will still follow up with the GP though just to get to the end of it. Great your getting bloods done, hopefully it won’t take took long. I have all my fingers crossed for you. Let me know how you get on xx

xxapxx · 26/03/2021 20:35

@CarrieA123 thanks for your quick response. I was dreading the bloods (couldn’t understand how they’d manage to get the precision with him fighting and wriggling everywhere) but they were amazing and it wasn’t half as stressful as I’d imagined!

They’ve said about a week for results and we have a referral to sort apt with Paediatrician too.

Will come back and post an update once I have more info but in the meantime I’m remaining positive as he’s a chunky happy boy xx

Jbd111 · 15/06/2021 02:33

@Zaydensmommie214 did you find out any information. My baby has had one for about 8 months, it’s slightly larger though.

lillylemons · 15/06/2021 02:49

My son had a lump in his neck it was a swollen lymph node it was getting bigger for a few months eventually it started getting smaller and after 8 months has vanished.

xxapxx · 15/06/2021 14:41

Hi, my little boys bloods were fine and he was physically examined by a paediatrician who discharged him saying it’s a swollen Lymph gland but always good to get them checked as they can be a sigh of other illnesses too.

Hope all your babies get signed off with no issues

92ph · 04/01/2022 00:07

Hi any updates on the lump my toddler has this in same spot had bloods done waiting on word back I’m so worried

Reusmum · 02/02/2022 15:30

Any updates? We’re Just waiting on an appointment with the paediatrician

92ph · 02/02/2022 19:50

Yes I had a follow up yesterday there lympnodes and can come up if the body was fighting an infection or had an injury the pediatrician didn’t seem worried but I demanded bloods done as a precaution and bloods came back clear and all normal said they can take months to go down but I must ad my son had glandular fever in December and that’s when I noticed them has your son been sick recently or had a fall

Reusmum · 02/02/2022 20:10

We first noticed it at the end of October. When we took him to the GP she said he’s ears were a little red but apart from that he was fine. He did have a patch of eczema on his face though and then since Christmas he’s been on and off with a cold.

92ph · 02/02/2022 21:02

Yes more than likely his body was is responding to an infection but if your worried get the bloods done for peace of mind my son has 3 up in side of neck movable balls and up one in his groin they take time to go down just keep an eye that it’s not getting bigger or harder

Reusmum · 03/02/2022 07:40

He’s already had some bloods done. They came back clear but the doctor had ordered in an depth blood work test and it showed some of the red cells were abnormally shaped. She didn’t think it was related though and probably just one of those things that we found because we were looking.

92ph · 03/02/2022 16:07

Yes they know what there looking for they also sent away bloods to check cells for my son but I think it’s the white blood cells that show up something if it’s serious now I’m not 💯 sure once the bloods are normal I wouldn’t worry to much and he’s the same child as usual not tiered or Out of sorts

Reusmum · 03/02/2022 17:03

That’s it he’s fine in himself thankfully. Thank you so much and keep me updated.

92ph · 03/02/2022 17:19

I know how your feeling I will do you to hopefully they will be gone soon for them both 🤞😊
