DH has taken DD to out of ours doc

She's 2.5 and threw up at noon and was listless, pale, no appetite for the rest of the day. Her temperature didn't improve with Calpol. DH came home to take her to the GP but she perked up when she sae him so we cancelled the appointment.

Then she lay on the floor and temperature was 39.5. 40 minutes after more Calpol, it was 40 degrees and she started throwing up lots even though she hasn't eaten today. She is whimpering and says her head hurts. DH has taken her by taxi to out of hours, I am home with 4 month old DS v anxious and terrified it's meningitis. Can kids still get it even though she's had all her routine jabs?

Really hope it's nothing too serious. The fact that she perked up earlier is a positive sign. Hope you get some news soon.

My first thought was rotavirus. Vile and can be very very pleasant but most toddlers get it.

When dd2 was a baby, toddler dd1 was going through a bad time with asthma and I stayed at home with newborn several times while DH took dd1 to OOH. I know how nerve wracking it can be to sit and wait.

I've been in your position and it's horrible - thinking of you. For what it's worth, this is what my DS is like when he has tonsillitis, so fingers crossed it's nothing more than that. Hope your DD starts to feel better soon.

Crikey I'm a wreck and not normally an anxious person....the nefarious power of Dr Google! They've only just gone so hopefully they'll be seen soon. And also hope baby DS doesn't come down with any lurgies, I can't cope!

Dr Google should have been struck off years ago, he's crap. When its your wee one you can't help but think the worst but it is more likely to be some rotten virus that's doing the rounds rather than anything more sinister.
Its so hard not to worry though so I'll hold your hand too x

Hope you hear some positive news soon op. fingers crossed that its just one of those viruses that seem to keep going round. I'm sure it'll all be fine but as a parent it's natural to worry. Please try to step away from dr google though- it will drive you mad- I speak from experience x

Holds your hand ... I know what you are going through. My DD was in hospital several times when young with what turned out to be severe abdominal migraine (we only found out years later as it wasn't recognized at the time). They always tested her for meningitis as the symptoms were so similar in her case so hopefully in your DD's case it's just one of the very nasty viruses that are doing the rounds at the minute.

I was in your position a couple of years ago when ds had pneumonia - it was so horrible and I felt so torn between newborn dd and ill ds.

You're doing the right thing getting her seen - hope you get good news soon, fwiw it sounds very much like te horrendous bug we've all had here.

OP, I've done the Googling so you don't have to: the risk of meningitis in the general population appears to be about 1/400,000. From what I can see it looks as though its a bit higher in the under 5s but its still in the thousands to one category. Viral meningitis is milder than bacterial and bacterial can be treated successfully with antibiotics.

Thanks itchy that's given me some perspective. They are still waiting to be seen, DH says she threw up again in the taxi and again in the waiting room
