Good 'chapter books' for a 5yo - Milly Molly Mandy?

DD has just really got into longer books with chapters. She's 5 but has a very advanced vocabulary and could easily cope with books above her age (although she's a bit sensitive - she found The BFG a bit disturbing,though that may have just been because I was unsure about it). So, any good suggestions for books? We're reading The Enchanted Wood at the moment but it's getting on my nerves - just stop going up the bloody tree if you're going to encounter problems every time, FFS Someone suggested Milly Molly Mandy but I've never read any of those - are they any good for a 5yo? Any other suggestions welcome, thanks!

my dd likes chapter books too. She is reading the faraway tree, loves the wishing chair ( as i did) and lot so other kinda non pc Enid Blyton.

I too would like to know what other authors people's dcs like. Roald Dahl does have some great stories, but some of them have scary bits. DD just finished Fantastic mr Fox and really loved that. Don't start her on the magic fairy books tho!!!, they are drivel, and there are about 200 of them!! Ok for dd to read i guess, but a nightmare to read to them.iyswim.

Milly Molly Mandy is sweet, very dated, but sweet.

DD loved the magic finger by Roald Dahl, one of his shorter, simpler ones
Milly Molly Mandy was too dated for dd's taste
The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark is a good one
And dd loves the rainbow magic books- I think they are sweet

There is a drivel aspect piratecat, but perfect for 5 yr olds in that they are simple and not too scary iykwim

ohh I don't know my dd was scared of the trolls...I limited it to the 1st 7 books and that was that...although now she likes unicorn school books which really are trite

how could i forget about mrs pepperpot, i used to love her.!

My DD loved MMM at that age, I quite liked the dated aspect (makes reading interesting for me if there are things to talk about like her being excited about going in a car).
She also liked Little House in the Big Woods a lot around the same age.
Also many of the Dick King Smith books esp the ones about Sophie, but the one we both liked best was one about a princess who gets a pet pig, sorry I can't remember the name of it.
You may guess from that lot that we live in the country and my DD is animal obsessed! I suspect they all might be less relevant to a city child.

there are lots of good modern books for 5 yr olds too. Worth comparing with the children's books of 30-40 years ago. Look at the Yougn Corgi series

Junie B Jones is a good modern equivalent of Milly Molly Mandy.
Also the Josie Smith series by Magdalen Nabb. Out of print now but easy enough to pick up secondhand on Amazon, Abebooks or Ebay.

Anna Hibiscus is also lovely as a read aloud book, has lovely pictures too.

my twin girls are nearly 5 and like MMM, also Gobbolino the witch's cat, george's marvellous medicine and some others - I got a puffin classics pack from the book people - its not on there at the moment, but they are a good place to look for collections of similar style books

I really, really like old-fashioned books, but I would like to stuff MMM's patty pans down the neck of her striped dress. If she isn't enough to make any child want to say "yah, boo", then I don't know what is.

My DD is four, so I don't have any great suggestions yet (she's obsessed with the Faraway Tree).

However, I do remember enjoying Amelia Jane at that age. DS, now six, loved the Ghosthunters series when he was four/five. He and DD both like the Famous Five and Secret Seven.

Clever Polly is a good suggestion. They are old, but definitely not dated!

Has MMM been up-dated? I remember thinking it was a bit old-fashioned, and that was 40 years ago.

Reading the Faraway Tree at the mo 'I say girls there's something rather queer up here!' we're really loving it, will be moving onto roald dahl next, fantastic mr fox is good and danny champion of the world is my favourite story of all time. Have read Milly Molly Mandy and that's good although I get a bit bored of saying 'presently' all the time.

My friend has recommended Pippy Longstocking too as a good read.
