Books or book series for 8 year old

Hello,

My 8 year old has always loved reading, with the Harry Potter series being a particular favourite. He’s read all the books a few times and has also read most of the books we have at home. He’s read and liked:
-The Kid Normal series
-Diary of a Wimpy Kid series
-How to Train Your Dragon books
-Anything Minecraft or Starwars themed.

I’m planning a library trip, so if anyone has suggestions of books he may like, they’d be gratefully received. TIA!

Percy Jackson (or the other similar series by Rick Riordan)
A Series of Unfortunate events

angelopal · 16/05/2023 17:44

Agree with Percy Jackson. My DD9 really liked the first one and we are half way through the second.

Also choose your own adventure books are good for getting different stories from the same book. There are quite a lot of them.

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 16/05/2023 17:46

Polar Bear Explorer Club I think it’s called?

May be too easy but I personally like an easy read:
13 Storey Treehouse series
David Baddiel books
Barry Loser (I despise these but they’re similar to wimpy kid in style)

GlitchStitch · 16/05/2023 17:48

My 8 year old is currently enjoying The Wild Robot books. I think there is a 3rd one coming out soon.

blondie87 · 16/05/2023 17:53

Thanks for all the suggestions! Absolutely fantastic.

@MyFaceIsAnAONB yes the Treehouse series were also a hit, but now he ploughs through them as not much text.

Star Wars: Adventures in Wild Space series?

Pamela Butchart Baby Aliens series?

TrustPenguins · 16/05/2023 18:05

Tom Gates series - my DS LOVES these!
Beaky Malone.
World of Norm.
Roald Dahl books?

MessyRaptor · 16/05/2023 18:09

My DS has v similar reading tastes. Big hits in our house are Wizards of Once (same author as how to train your dragon), Mr Gum, Narnia and Swallows & Amazons.

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 16/05/2023 18:43

@blondie87 yes I was just saying to my husband that the treehouse books are too easy. But also he enjoys them and want to keep him reading for the fun of it!

Also the Tom Fletcher books he LOVED and one of them has QR codes so you can listen to the book’s soundtrack 😍

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 16/05/2023 19:14

Just read some Neil Gaiman ‘Fortunately The Milk’ to year 3 DS and he was enraptured! Easy read as well with good pictures.

Cockerdileteeth · 16/05/2023 19:25

Mine likes Harry Potter and fantasy (and Star Wars!)

Some of his top picks:
Vashti Hardy - Brightstorm trilogy, Crowfall, possibly also Harley Hitch but that might be on the cusp of too young for him
Ross Montgomery - The Midnight Guardians, Chimeseekers, and I think he has a new one just out
Thomas Taylor - Malamander and its sequels
AF Steadman - Skandar and the Unicorn Thief, Skandar and the Phantom Rider
Kieran Larwood The Legend of Podkin One Ear
Mine's a Percy Jackson fan too but at 8 yours might not get all the cultural reference points and teenage stuff. Though mine's not much older.

Eva Ibbotson is great. Try A Dog and his Boy?

blondie87 · 16/05/2023 21:04

@MessyRaptor Yes, he read the Wizards of Once last summer- really enjoyed it!
I’d forgotten about those.

@MyFaceIsAnAONB the Tom Fletcher books were also a hit.

Some suggestions I’ve not come across, so look forward to a library trip! Thank you all

@Cockerdileteeth thanks for those: not come across any of these.

@blondie87 this is a good place for you or your DC to look for suggestions. There's even a book match list for what to read next if you liked Harry Potter and one for HTTYD.

Honnomushi · 17/05/2023 07:01

My 8 year old loves Skandar and the Unicorn series. Also the Warrior Cat series by Erin Hunter.

herbygarden · 17/05/2023 07:03

My 8 year old devoured Tom Fletcher, David Walliams, How to Train your Dragon and less 'proper' books but he loves them. Dog Man, Cat Kid and Bunny v Monkey - the last three series seem to be the 'cool' books to take into school right now! Oh and he loves Beano!

CassTheFox · 17/05/2023 07:07

Great suggestions here.. my 8 year old loved the Peanut Jones books by Rob Biddulph.
He’s starting some of the children’s Terry Pratchett books now which makes me really happy!

erikbloodaxe · 17/05/2023 07:12

Warrior series by Erin Hunter
Redwall series by Brian Jaques

DS is now 24 but is saving the above for his future children should he have any.

Heya,
Not quite in the same genre as Harry Potter, but entertaining nonetheless, my 8 year old got a book called 'Puzzles & Punchlines: Jokes and Actrivities for 8 Year Old Kids' for her birthday and loved it. She took it on a family road trip and we all laughed a lot.
