Books for 7 year old boys.

Hello! I wondered if any of you lovely people had book suggestions for a 7 year old boy who is a reluctant reader? I've tried Roald Dahl, David Walliams etc. Harry Potter doesn't interest him. I'm stuck! Thanks x

Well, my DC is a girl but she reads very widely so have a few suggestions.

We loved the mr gum books, beanos and from there the Dennis the menace diaries, I’ve never read those beast quest books (dd loved the fairy equivalent) but I think lots of people use them as an introduction to chapter books.

My ds absolutely loves the ultimate footballer biographies, if he’s at all into football. Maybe he’d prefer non-fiction? We had loads of dinosaur and animal books.

Bunnicula, Dick King Smith books, horrible histories?

Yes the wimpy kid books were/are very popular and the 13 storey treehouse collection. Also the faraway trees by Enid Blyton.

Are the horrible histories suitable for a soon-to-be 6 yr old?

One of my friends found her DS had no interest in fiction but would happily read age appropriate fact books on topics he liked - might be worth a try?

My DD loves the Guinness Book of Records. Not as daunting as a chapter book. Pick a page at random and see what pops out at you.

The boy who grew dragons books are great. Also second Mr Gum and the Treehouse series.

The Phoenix comic is great for this age. It got both my boys into reading.

Dare I say BeastQuest? Yes, it's the same basic story retold about a zillion times, but the familiarity and repetition is encouraging to reluctant readers. We read the first few with DS2 but then refused to read any more which encouraged him to read them himself.

Also second The Phoenix comic, and How to Train your Dragon (infinitely preferable for adults to read!).

The Wigglesbottom Primary series by Pamela Butchart would be my suggestion. 3 small stories within one book with illustrations and humour.

The content is, unless he is very sensitive. The there can be quite a lot of text, interspersed with the cartoons and comic strips, so derives in hue his reading is.

I’ll second the Dogman series. They’re written in comic strip form, and my 6yo extremely reluctant reader will read without complaining!

Dirty Bertie and Captain Underpants are what got my got my 7 year old nephew reading and then he was hooked!

My nephew is 7 and he reads horrible histories and has just read The Danger Gang by Tom Fletcher (he read it in 4 days so it must've been good!)

Mine Ds7 has read beast quest, Dino FC, horrid Henry, captain underpants (he loved this), he also loves the Pokemon books. He’s also really into Greek mythology so I’m getting hopeless heroes.

What are his interests. My dc also enjoyed non-fiction books, I think partly because you often didn’t get a big solid bit of text, but lots of smaller bits.

Then I discovered Rob Child’s, who wrote football theme books, and dc developed an interest in books. Theo Walcott has also written children football based books.

My ds7 has enjoyed horrible histories, the hobbit, Harry Potter, famous 5, captain pug, the dog who changed the world, and the whole narnia series.

Ds2 loved Dirty Bertie at the age - funny, short and rude!
