Books to read aloud to 8 year old boy please

I still read aloud to my 8 year old son most nights as he enjoys it and sometimes we take turns to read, so sneaks in a bit more reading for him as he's not overly keen on reading himself for fun, even though he is a competent reader.

We've been on Harry Potter for what seems like a lifetime and though I love the books myself I find them sooo boring to read out loud, so wordy, on Order of Phoenix and finding it the worst so far.

Any recommendations for books that flow well for reading aloud would be gratefully received to save my sanity 😀

I'm reading Terry Pratchett's Truckers to my 8 year old at the moment and he's really enjoying it. It's quite humorous and well put together, certainly readable for an adult too, but was written for children. It's about little people who live in a shop and think it's the whole world, but who get a big awakening.

We've had a couple of books by Frank Cottrell-Boyce and I found myself reading for longer than I meant to, as I was enjoying it so much.

Also "Floors" by Patrick Carman much enjoyed. Also found that quite easy to read aloud.

Also A Christmas Carol once December comes.

Oh thanks everyone, will get looking on Amazon, I remember Mrs Frisby and the rats of NIMH from school so would actually quite like to read that again myself, haven't thought of it in years. I think I remember one called Emil and the Detectives from P5 at school so same age group, must look that up too.

I got a set of the wombles from the book people and my 7 year old has enjoyed them. I also bought a set of poetry for our next choices.

Emil and the Detectives is by Eric Kastner. He's written a few children's books which are all fab.

I still read to my 9 yo DS and we get through books quite quickly. We've recently loved:

The Iron Man by Ted Hughes is lovely to read aloud. Plus the chapters aren't too long.

The Hobbit is also 'better' read aloud.

City of Ember? There are 4 books, actually quite good, I'm listening to them as audiobooks. I'd have loved them as a kid!

My 9yo ds1 and I are into the second book of how to train your dragon. It's quite different to the tv show but it's very good.

Slightly implausibly, mine is really loving the Little House books- we're well into the third in the series and I'm looking for something else based on a true story to read when we finish them. He says he likes them because they're real.

SittHakim not based on a true story but in a very similar vein to Little House books are the Sarah, Plain and Tall books by Patricia MacLachlan.

'One Dog and his Boy' by Eva Ibbotson is a great story to read.

Definitely not the Warrior Cat books. Got one from the library and it's nigh on impossible to read aloud. I find myself cutting every third adjective and clause. So much guff in there!

Plus we're on chapter 11 and nothing has really happened yet.

Even DS is bemused.

Second How to Train your Dragon and The Edge Chronicles.

Currently reading The Lord of the Rings to our 8yo because he loved The Hobbit. DH and I are having to take alternate nights because we're enjoying an excuse to re-read it too.

Thank you Thumbcat for recommending the secret of platform 13, we just read the first two chapters and both really enjoyed. It's much easier to read than Harry Potter! Can't wait to hear what happens next.

Glad you're enjoying it. We're reading the Harry Potter books at the moment - just started Order of the Phoenix. I think the writing has got better as the books have gone along but they don't at all compare to really well written books that are so enjoyable to read aloud.

My friends love A.F. Harrold's Books - Fizzlebert Stump (the boy who ran away from the circus and joined the library) and his Greta Zargo ones. The Imaginary and Song from Somewhere Else are a bit scary in places but amazing stories - might be a bit old for him - but I'd say they are 'harry potter' age range

Maudlin Towers by Chris Priestley

I suggest Wishbone Billy. The chapters are right length for bedtime read and each chapter ends on cliffhanger. It takes about two weeks to get through and so doesn’t become an never ending chore. It’s funny too for kids and parents alike. The Wilf The Worrier books are quite good to read aloud. Also the classics Stig of the Dump or The Wishing Chair.

There are a lot. In my opinion best books, you could read to an 8-year-old completely depends upon your choice. Still, there are many good reads available that you can opt for!
