Books to read aloud to 8 year old boy please

I still read aloud to my 8 year old son most nights as he enjoys it and sometimes we take turns to read, so sneaks in a bit more reading for him as he's not overly keen on reading himself for fun, even though he is a competent reader.

We've been on Harry Potter for what seems like a lifetime and though I love the books myself I find them sooo boring to read out loud, so wordy, on Order of Phoenix and finding it the worst so far.

Any recommendations for books that flow well for reading aloud would be gratefully received to save my sanity 😀

Hi
I bought a beautiful personalised children’s book for my daughter a couple of years ago by snapdragon and wanted to buy another but it’s too late for Xmas can anyone recommend anything similar and just as personalised ie all the detail they use and photos

Just So Stories are great for reading aloud. Especially How the Elephant got His Trunk and How the Whale got his Throat.

We also had success with Emil & the Detectives.

Not sure if this would be too young - but its so funny - a reading together book - no pictures and kindle only, though - Mr Frogg Goes to Work www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07L36JGZW?tag=mumsnetforum-21

Truckers is great, my son enjoyed that along with the How to Train your Dragon series. He also loved
The Bolds by Julian Clary
Especially if you can do silly voices!
Never ever try Wimpy Kid books, death by a thousand cuts reading them aloud!

Can second the Bolds.

Mr Gump is another really silly series.

Shadow Forest by Matt Haig
Any Roald Dahl, especially the BFG

Diana Wynne Jones Chrestomanci series (start with Charmed Life) - also The Homeward Bounders, A tale of time city, Howl's moving castle. A truly fantastic writer - doesn't waste a word and had a gift for building up to (and resolving) a scene of hilarious but entirely logical chaos.

Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book is a delight - beautifully written and while it is very dark in parts it is also full of hope, warmth and humour. ("It will take more than a couple of good hearted souls to raise a child. It will take," said Silas, "a whole graveyard.") The target reading age is 8-11 but there is so much in there for adults too.

Garth Nix's Keys of the Kingdom series and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl books are both worth a look too - very funny and clever.

DS's absolute favourite has been The Secret Garden (which surprised me - but he loved it so much he downloaded it on Audible and listens to it over and over.) Other successes include Swallows and Amazons, Alice in Wonderland, Black Beauty, The Wizard of Oz, all the Narnia books.... I tend to read the slightly more archaic ones too him as I reckon anything contemporary is easier for him to read himself.

The Secret Agent Mummy is good OP (if you are still looking!) - it's silly and random but fun to read out loud. We sometimes take it in turns to read chapters at bedtime and the vocab etc is fine for my DS who's also 8. King Flashypants is also good.

He got Just William for Christmas so we're about to make a start on that - I never read it as a kid so I'm looking forward to it as well!

I hear you about HP btw - and I love it, but it's tough going to read out loud. The audiobooks are fantastic if you want to give yourself a break from reading them!

I read to DS8 and my class (all 8-11yo boys) so I get through quite a few. Some favourites:

Wild Boy- really recommend, my class begged me to carry on reading some days.
The Legend of Podkin One Ear
The Wizards of Once/ Twice Magic
Skellig
The Demon Headmaster
Gobbolino the Witch's Cat

PrivateParkin · 23/01/2019 21:39

Also we've recently read The Baker Street Boys series - brilliant books about Sherlock Holmes' gang of child helpers, The Irregulars - really good. It was a TV series in the 80s if you're ancient like me and remember it!

4point - I love Gobbolino.
