Daughter been referred to orthopedics after having an xray on twisted ankle and they said it looks "unusual" they asked if she had been feeling unwell recently or had a fever which set off slight alarm bells in my head. They told us I will get a call in a day or two.
Anyone had any experience like this. I'm sure it's probably nothing. But I'm worrying a little.

OP what makes you think cancer? Please don’t torture yourself, wait for the call and next steps.

SloppyThePoodle · 20/05/2025 12:49

Surely it's more likely to be an infection (due to the fever questions). Why jump straight to cancer?

Chickencuddle · 20/05/2025 12:51

It was like a hole in her bone on the xray. I googled and thats whag made me think thay but maybe youre right. I know o just need to not google sorry.

Fingers crossed it's nothing.

Keep in mind that they have to consider the worst options because it is part of their job but the vast majority of the time it isn't that.

Amelie2025 · 20/05/2025 13:04

Dr Google is officially a wanking bastard! He's the merchant of doom.

Step away from his consulting room!

how old is your daughter? How did she twist her ankle! What does she enjoy doing??

PrettyPuss · 20/05/2025 13:10

My son had something called Osteomyelitis when he was a baby. Basically an infection that is close to or has entered the bone. He was only 5 months old and we were told is was very unusual as it's more common in children when they have a fall or an injury. Anyway, the infection was drained and he then had 6 weeks of antibiotics. Turned out it had been the 'flu virus that had entered his ankle (one of the students at the hospital was curious and had the infection tested to find out which virus it was).

I hope all turns out to be nothing; it could be loads of other things than cancer. I understand the worry, though. Google is the worst thing for setting off a million alarm bells in our heads! I hope you hear from them soon with reassurance.

Ahh well done for sharing! This sounds much more likely than cancer.

OP, sending you lots of hugs. I remember panicking when my son had to be referred for so many of his glands being up and not going down. It was a scary time but all for nothing x x

Ahh based on what PrettyPuss said I wonder if could be something related to the pneumonia then. Maybe the infection got into the bone and that’s why they’re asking if she’s been poorly recently.

F1LandoFan · 20/05/2025 13:45

I’m not sure if it will help, but primary bone cancer in a child is really very rare. It’s much more likely to be something else xxx

Chickencuddle · 20/05/2025 14:30

As a previous poster has written, my DD had osteomyelitis too. We thought it was a fracture as she was limping. Took their advice to put on a cast. She was 3. The pain was getting worse and then a very high temp. They told us to have an mri which was just a sedation but it didn’t take so sent us to GOSH for the mri. Once there- within minutes, they thought it was osteomyelitis, given mri to confirm after full sedation. They kept us in for a month, and antibiotics IV for a further 3 months. Anyway- just read your post and my thoughts went straight to this. It’s full on- but she’s a happy healthy teen who doesn’t remember her hospital stay. Just like others have said- a flu type of virus and an infection in her heel bone. Of course you’ll worry, but your DC will be totally fine in the right hands. Good luck

12 it's a great age!!

She sounds fab!! Hopefully her chest will get better & she can get back to gymnastics. It's so good for them.

I was always twisting my ankles or going over on them.

it's important to get them seen at the time & looked after! My 'it'll be fine' attitude was ok at the time. But it's causing issues now in my 50's. 🙄

That sounds highly likely. Hopefully it's something they can get sorted fairly easily & relatively quickly. 🥰

That must've been very horrible and scary at the time, but it's great to know she's a healthy happy teen now who doesn't remember the ordeal!!

Hi Op my son . Had a hole in his leg on a xray. he had the xray after twisting his leg and screaming in pain.

Turns out it was a bone cyst. I'd never heard of it. But apparently they are really common. He was referred under the 2ww. Alder hey did MRIs (mainly to reassure me as we have a history of bone cancer). They were really thorough.

I hope it's nothing xxx

RampantIvy · 04/06/2025 20:06

Good luck for tomorrow. I have walked in your shoes with DD. It turned out to be a rare form of osteomyelitis.

Hi, was following your thread and wondered how it went?
