Nanny - need some urgent advice please

I need some urgent advice.

My nanny who has been with us for 5 weeks is leaving in 2 weeks. to cut a very long story short she has been unsuitable.

What i am asking about is the following - on my pc in the playroom is 2 log ins - one is the childrens and one is ours. All the children and the nanny know the children's log in and use it to access the internet. I always use ours ( the adult ) log in . Today I used the pc after one of the kids who was already logged in and clikced the drop down box at the top to see whether the site I wanted to access was already there ( to save retyping it).

There were lots of sites there in Macedonain - my nanny's language. Idly I clicked on one and got a sharp shock. It was a sex shop or a porn channel - I couldn't tell which in macedonian. the front page was dildos and pictures of hairy vaginas - I kid you not. I was absolutely horrified as this is in the kids log in drop down box and any of the kids could easily have clicked on it either out of curiosity or by accident ( they like to access fantage which is also on drop down and could easily have misclicked).

My oldest daughter is 12 - this could also affect her fairly badly - to see a page full of dildos and vaginas. I am certain none of my kids found this site ( rather than nanny) due to fact it is in eastern european langauge.

I am very upset and usnure what to do. I am considering changing kids log in tellng them there is a problem with pc so that nanny can no longer access during last 2 weeks she is here. I want to know though how to get rid of the site from the drop down box so kids can't access it any more.

Please help......

Oh God, Lisa. You do seem seem to be badd nanny behaviour magnet.

Firstly (and urgently) Yes yes yes, change the password on the childrens' log in and tell them it is broken. Tell the nenny it is broken too. Although you might need to refrain from using it yourself for a while to pull off this story.

Secondly, I'm afraid porn is rather difficult to remove from a computer. The safest approach really is to save all your files and rebuild the computer, ensuring everything is wiped clean.

Do you have something like Internet Options under Control Panel? You can delete the browsing history, cookies, temp internet files from there.

Thank you both - I dont' want to and dont' know how to rebuild the pc I don't think!!!

willow - where can I find internet options?

Porn channels are rather crafty. They are like viruses and infest the computer.

I would take the computer somehwere to have it clean off if you have to. But first I'd check with Dell or whereever you bought the PC to see if can be restored to the condition in which it left the fatory.

You are way too late for internet options. That is a preventative measure. But you already have the porn.

BTW, I'd be mighty pissed off with the nanny.

Control Panel is in your start menu. Then you should see Internet Options (or maybe Network and Internet - then choose Internet Options).

Ask in Geeky Stuff - someone there will know. You can get professionals to do it, I'm sure.

Eek to the nanny - that's truly shocking. I think you need to mention to her quietly that you saw what she'd been looking at on the internet, does she have an explanation and that it will affect any reference you give her. (I appreciate you didn't ask for advice on the nanny, but )

havent a clue how to reboot etc - blonde is very naive with computers but i am sure if you delete broswer history the sites should not be able to be seen again unless type in web address

agree a password is needed

is there any way the site could be innocent - i have been known to look at love honey/ann s on mb lappy - but obv i dont look at hairy fannies

And, when you get a new nanny, I'd give her her own log in and I'd check the log (if you can).

www.ccleaner.com is a useful utility. Please make sure you read the instructions prior to running, else you may erase all your cookies (which store passwords for site logins such as Mumsnet).

This will clean up Internet Explorer, Firefox and various other browsers - CCleaner will display a list of all the software it can cleanup and will give you options for what bits you want cleaned.

What on earth was she thinking though? Very weird!

I think you need to bring it up with the nanny or you wouldn't be able to mention it in any reference you give - though I doubt she will use you as a reference!

Thank you all so much. I am afraid I am a comp[lete and total dunce when it comes to computres and have no idea how to implement all these useful suggestions.

Can someone please take me by the hand and tell me exactly how to get it off the drop down box so that the kids cannot innocently click on it. Much thanks!

If I just keep accessing different sites won't it eventually fall of the bottom of the drop down list so to speak? I don't care about it being on the pc history as long as its not some illegal site. It didn't seem to be - thank god no kids on it othewise nanny would have been out pronto - just a site for adult pleasure - may have just been a sex shop and not porn channel but it was very very explicit for sex shop. I can give you the site addy is anyone is brave enough to check it out.

Do you have Windows lisa? Do you know which version?

I think if you delete everything through Internet Options it shouldn't show up in the browser box anymore.

And btw - what would you do about nanny? Let her work her 2 weeks out or dismiss her instantly? My take is that she is just stupid rather than a "danger " to the kids - she's entitled as an adult to access these sites - she's just not switched on enough ( or doens't care enough ) to realise that she shouldn't do it on her employer's pc or on the kids log in!!

OK blondes - its www.valentino.com. I'm sure its a sex shop having just re peeked. But I still want it off. You have to go through a few pages to get the vaggies but thte dildos and others are on front page!

Have a look round Internet Options - there should be a bit that says "browsing history" and lets you delete. You can also delete cookies, web form info, saved passwords, temp files I think.

Deleting browsing history should be on the General tab if you're using Internet Explorer...

I would consider that grounds for instant dismissal, I think.

once saving absolutely anything and I stress save absolutely anything you would need from their log in, I would go to control panel on your start menu then user accounts then click on change accounts and you should be able to remove their log in and create 2 new ones one for kids one for nanny. This works on windows xp maybe slightly different on other windows etc but not majorly

Pay her? That I wouldn't do ,no as I'd have to bring a temp in and surely that could amount to repudiatry breach of contract? Just not sure if I want to bother .

just let her finish her contract and tell her you are upset don't think you could sack her for misconduct as she is adult but would emphasise how stupid she was
