Back on bl**ding branding & business names.....

Sod ...sod...sod....

Months ago I was pondering (on MN) about my business name...

The upshot (after loads of help and advise) was that I should stay Childminding@Walnut Corner....and not use anything too different for the Out-of-School Club.

So Walnut Corner Out-of-school Club was born....but now the Headmaster, 3 parents and a govenor have said that we should be XXX@Walnut Corner....but not what XXX should be......the only viable suggestion was Kids/Kidz @WC

I don't like the word KIDS never mind it being spelt wrong.

Help...do I just tell them to P* off?
Or can we come up with a good (fantastic) name??
TIA

I've sent you an email with my baby site on...it will grow honest

Not Sure you really need any other name, IYSWIM...

Why does it need to be out of school @ wc or
childminding @ wc...

If you are coming up with your trading name / business name, I would simply use 'Walnut Corner' it's cosy, cute, family oriented.

Have you looked at bubble99's Website for her nurseries ?

\link{http://www.lambsmead-nurseries.co.uk/here} - I appreciate you're not running a nursery but it's a related field. Her names have nothing 'obvious' to do with kids....

What's wrong with 'Walnut Corner' ???

(Sorry if I'm being dumb, I just don't get the quandry.

KatieMac · 21/04/2005 21:35

Typical man....don't answer the question....think of a new question instead.

It's def something to think about......

hotmail is down.

This film is good but slow.

KatieMac · 21/04/2005 21:37

what's hotmail?

OP posts:
hub2dee · 21/04/2005 21:41

nurseries link

Also, don't see how I've changed the q

I have refined your needs to their essence.

There is nothing wrong with calling your business 'Walnut Corner' it's a great name. It has a tie in with your physical premises and the domain is available.

Personally, I don't like the word 'corner' in this context - maybe farm / orchard instead ? But if the people around you already know your place as Walnut Corner, that is v. important...

hub2dee · 21/04/2005 21:43

hotmail is the service provider which runs my e-mail.

They suck.

But you should surf them one day as they're very popular and it's worth knowing about to make out you're 'au fait' with all that is Internet.

KatieMac · 21/04/2005 21:45

So does that mean you can't see my site - I really like it

OP posts:
hub2dee · 21/04/2005 21:55

Server has come back up. I have seen your site.

Looks great, and the structure is fine.

It's really no business of mine, but I might be tempted to develop the top left tree into a logo for your business by incorporating a walnut into the tree or by stylising the image a little more into an outline shape etc.

You should consider this yourself and liaise with your Web developer as, essentially, I am interfering in something which has nothing to do with me IYSWIM.

So, where do we stand ?

KatieMac · 21/04/2005 22:01

That is my logo it is (roughly) a walnut tree shape (according to books)

It has been a joint effort between a mum,me & Morningpaper - this is the final product and I like it loads. along with walnut corner (in simpson font I think - all lowercase)

MP added the little walnut and that goes on loads of ads & literature & everyone loves it but it's not the logo just a little bit extra....

Am still thinking about being just walnut corner....I may sleep on it

OP posts:
KatieMac · 21/04/2005 22:02

I've just got to finish the text.......

OP posts:
hub2dee · 21/04/2005 22:03

If the business is called simply 'Walnut Corner'

(ie. you don't want to consider 'Walnut Orchard' or whatever)

then the question you are asking is what you should use as a headline / e-mail address (according to the page on your site I've seen).

I would go with something like 'learn' 'play' 'fun' or 'littlenut' / 'littlennuts' 'treemaker' 'the grower' at Walnutcorner.

If you don't like that, I think you want it short, and direct:

'contact' 'info' etc.

KatieMac · 21/04/2005 22:07

The website is pie in the sky at the moment.....I just want something at the top of my posters/adverts/business cards etc

Currently it's [email protected] was going to add XXX@WC

But you are (I think) suggesting just WC

(it doesn't look good as initials)

Which I will sleep on

BTW what about my suggestion for your TF

OP posts:
hub2dee · 21/04/2005 22:15

This would be so much easier on the phone.

I've seen the site. It looks great.

I made the suggestion because the tree looks basically like any other tree, IMHO. If you were to stylise it / incoroporate a big nut into the 'tree body' (or maybe put the tree in the middle of a walnut shell), then I think the image would be stronger.

I don't want to be the gooseberry in your relationship with morningpaper though. These things are for you to decide with your designer.

I also think (and perhaps I'm talking crap) that you are somewhat confused about the name of the business / the 'headline image name' used at the top of your page and your company's e-mail address.

Are you contemplating calling your business 'something@walnutcorner' ?

I think that's not a very good idea. Despite the font, the actual text (as would be reproduced in news article etc.) makes the name look techy, IMHO.

I think it's much better simply to call the business 'Walnut Corner'

This would also be the domain you register: 'walnutcorner.co.uk'

Now your e-mail address will read '[email protected]. u k'

I refer you then to my last couple of e-mails for suggestions about this word.

KatieMac · 21/04/2005 22:20

Yep - but I'm still coming to terms with you rejecting my (very clever) (in my opinion) name and choosing something sensible........that's the bit I have to think about.

After all I've been using it for nearly 2 yrs

I'd need to do some serious "re-branding"

and I said I'd ring if you emailed your no....

I thinbk you might be right about the WC name....I just need to come to terms with it

OP posts:
hub2dee · 21/04/2005 22:27

Hi Katie,

Whatever you put on your 'posters/adverts/business cards etc ' needs to be the name of the business.

You say you are considering 'CM@WC'

I think this is a bad idea because it makes it look like an e-mail address (which it is not - it is a business name) and also because it makes it LONG and COMPLEX instead of SHORT and SIMPLE.

Yes, I am suggesting WC as it is short, cute, makes a nice logo, is the name of your house, is what everyone knows your house as etc.

It also means you can change your description as you see fit. For example, today it might be:

'WALNUT CORNER
after school clubs for children 5 - 11'

or

'WALNUT CORNER
professional childminding'

In a few months it might be

'WALNUT CORNER
kids clubs run all weekend'

In a year's time it might be

'WALNUT CORNER
full time nursery'

Do sleep on it.

E-mail me your phone number if this drives you mad and you need to speak. Maybe you could discuss this with morningpaper - sure she would have some brill ideas.

KatieMac · 21/04/2005 22:28

not considering ...have been using for 2 yrs

That's why I'm struggling

OP posts:
hub2dee · 21/04/2005 22:35

At the end of the day you know your business better than anyone. And you also know if everyone 'gets the blah@blah" name. You should treat my comments as just one voice in the crowd.

I wish you strength in coming to terms with my (stunningly sharp) but (in my opinion) (bit strange) name.

You mention you've been using the name for two years.... remember, it's not the 'childming' bit of 'chimldming@walnutcorner' that people remember you by.... it's the walnut corner bit.

Oh yeah ref: "and I said I'd ring if you emailed your no.... " erm... no you didn't !!! You must be tired !!!!

Have a sleep. We'll talk tomorrow.

KatieMac · 21/04/2005 22:35

KatieMac · 22/04/2005 07:45

Sorry missed your finalpost...tired

Your right about being remembered for WC

So I'm still thinking - but have OFSTED today - so that takes priority

Catch you later

BTW I mentioned the Tel on the Mac thread....I think - or maybe not [confused icon]

OP posts:
hub2dee · 22/04/2005 08:06

Sort your Ofsted and we'll natter / debate / row later.

You should have stayed up for my last post. It was insightful, informative.... utterly brilliant....

Later.

hub2dee · 22/04/2005 08:12

PS - You were right about the phone number, the invitation is on the Mac thread, but my mother told me to never give it to strange girls I met online.

KatieMac · 22/04/2005 19:31

..and you think I should give mine to a very ....(unusual)..(strange)...(unique)...man?

OP posts:
hub2dee · 22/04/2005 20:15

LOL.

Your secret would be safe with me.

I'd only print it onto a number plate and stick it in the window of my rig.

Anyway:

Where are you at with your decision ?

SoupDragon · 22/04/2005 20:19
