Length of time in hospital after c-section?

That's it really. How long did you stay in after a c-section? Was it your choice to stay that long or did they make you? What is the earliest anyone has gone home?

DD was born just before 12pm on a thursday morning, and I left on sunday afternoon/evening.

BUT I had to sign myself out! I was just so fed up stuck in there on my own. They wanted me to stay in for longer because my iron levels were low (they always have been and still are) and various other reasons.

However, my scar got infected (was probably infected before I left but midwives missed it so on the one hand I regret going home cos they could have sorted that out in hopsital but then on the other hand, it was nice being at home and I had my mum to help out for the first couple of weeks (single parent still living at home at that time)

4 days after first, 48 hrs on the nose after second.

I was in for 2 days. I would have left after 1 day but they wouldn't sign me out until after 2. I had no problems either.

DD was born on the Wednesday afternoon by CS. I asked about leaving on the Friday afternoon as I hadn't been approached by any staff about it. I ended up staying the extra night, as it was December and the weather was awful.

I was there for my milk coming in on the Friday which was when they checked my wound/took the dressing off, and also for her hearing test to be done. DD was little and my first, but she slept really well and latched on ok, but should I have needed assistance in the night it would have been nice to have the help by the press of a button. I couldn't rest very much in hospital, it's so hot and noisy, but then I also had to have a blood patch so felt a bit poorly. Those three nights were about right for us in hindsight.

polly Did you sign yourself out? I'm also wanting to leave after 48 hours, or earlier if everything is OK.

I've had three sections

1st EMCS Tuesday out Thursday (regretted, should have stayed another day)
2nd ELCS Monday out Thursday (felt ine with this lentgh of time)
3rd ELCS Monday out Saturday (my choice, wanted stitch taken out before I left as DS2 has autism and climbs all over me)

Son born Wed lunchtime, out Sunday afternoon. Could have been Saturday but I couldn't walk much!

FannyPriceless Well I don't think that they can exactly make you stay if you don't want to...but they would not remove my catheter until the end of day 1 and my IV until the the morning of day 2 (right before I left). I didn't want to remove these things myself and even though I asked many times to have them removed they did it in their time.

Interesting. Maybe I am being a tad optimistic with my 48 hours. It's just that they said it's now compulsory that c-section patients go in the 6 bed ward rather than a private room (for 'safety reasons') and I know I will hate this. The noise, the heat, the lack of privacy and quiet times with my baby, other people watching Jeremy Kyle, other people's visitors, the nasty lights on all the time, etc!

Plus we are over an hour from the hospital so we also have the cost of DH staying in a nearby hotel while I'm in. This is needed as I am wheelchair bound so he has to be with me all day to help. We would much rather be at home if at all possible.

3rd c-section - 24 hours

Way too soon especially as was going home to ds2 with contagious chicken pox.

Tough luck apparently - was told they needed my bed.

I should have complained really but the midwife on the post-natal ward was so horrid I didn't want to be there any longer.

A bit about the private room thing?? I had a private room, I had to pay for it as I think you do if you want one in NHS hospitals, but I wouldn't have had it any other way. If I had been in a six bed ward I think I may have seriously considered taking out the catheter & IV myself ! Or bribed a student midwife/HCA.

I was going to say the only thing that bothered me was the road in the car on the way home - it hurt every bump we went over.

I don't know if you have feeling, but you may want to take that one facter into account - that your driver is as carefull as possible on the way home.

My bf is reg blind and had to have a c section due to pressure, she was in for the 48 hours and then home straight away and stayed there.

I would be happy knowing what I knwo noe to be home after 48 hours with someone there to help.

I would have been allowed home after 2 nights, i.e. on Wednesday after DS was born in the early hours of Monday morning - except we were asking for lots of help to get breastfeeding going so they persuaded me to stay one more night to get that sorted. But it was only due to that, otherwise could have gone home after 2 nights - I had a good recovery and was very ready to go home by then and a bit gutted to have to stay the extra night!

dd born friday noon elcs out sunday 10am felt ready to leave saturday am but would have had to sign a disclaimer so decided to stay

Dc 4, 1st cs, 48 hours. They considered letting me out after 24h due to bed shortages. Shocking!
At the same hospital where "one born every minute" was filmed!

Funnily enough, I signed myself out after 4 days after the first section. They wanted me to stay in an extra day - some nonsense about me needing to have established feeding before I left. I would have established feeding a lot quicker without the constant racket in the hospital! Couldn't wait to escape the place.

Second time they had a routine policy at the hospital (UCH) of turfing you out within 48 hours if no complications. I was actually so cosy and happy there I would have liked an extra couple of days...

DC3 - hopefully the same again!

Agree about the journey home though; this was painful!

ds1 born 3am Tues by em c-s, home by 6pm Wednesday. It was horrendous on the ward so i signed myself out, all was fine. Good luck!

ticktock I am also very about this new 'rule'. They said it's because of the risk of bleeding if there's noone else around. In how many ways is this wrong? 1. wouldn't I notice and ring the bell? 2. do they expect other the patients to notice? 3. if it's that much of a risk, shouldn't they be doing routine checks anyway?

I am really stressed by this and trying to cultivate a positive attitude.

Oh, and when I asked "How long do I have to stay on the ward?" they replied "You can request a private room as soon as you're up and about." As I sat there in my wheelchair!!

I had DS late Friday night and I think I was out late Monday afternoon, but it might have been Tuesday . That was in an individual room (although free, which was a big plus of that hospital) but I was climbing up the walls with frustration by the end.

If I'd had another c-section with no complications next time round I would have signed myself out after 24 hours, but fortunately I had a VBAC and could have been out within 2 hours if DH hadn't had to go and get the carseat.

12 hours.

DD born 10pm by emcs following a 2 day labour, I was discharged at 10am the next day.

They were practically packing my bag for me.

Is this six beds with full curtains? Because if so it can be very private indeed - tbh I felt my four bed ward was too quiet and private - I'd have welcomed a bit more human contacts and a few more nurses in evidence - but whenever I was feeding DS some officious passer by always took it upon herself to close my curtains to give me some unwanted privacy.
