All second babies are born earlier, with a shorter labour, right?

Go on, placate me please.

ds 10 days early 23 1/2 hour labor from waters breaking reg cc started straight away

dd 8 days late 10 hours from reg cc

My second although late was much easier to carry and birth.

Deemented · 15/08/2009 10:27

My boys were born at 28 weeks and 4 days. 50hour+ labour, emergency c sec.

DD was 39 weeks and 4 days, 8 hours labour vbac.

Picante · 15/08/2009 11:07

Ok sounding hopeful for a quicker labour but may have to wait for it!

I'm due next Tuesday btw, and ds was 10 days late...

Dd1 - 2 days induction born 8 hours after ARM born on due date
Dd2 - spontaneous labour term + 4 arrived hospital 3 am DD born 8 am
Dd3 - spontaneous labour term + 12 arrived hospital 9.30pm Dd born 10.42pm

So all mine were progressively shorter.

norktasticninja · 15/08/2009 12:25

DD was 39+2 with a 12 hour labour
DS was 39+4 with a 2 1/2 hour labour

kidcreoleandthecoconuts · 15/08/2009 12:29

DC1- born 41+3 after 12 hour labour.
DC2- born 40+2 after 6 hour labour.

BoBoo · 15/08/2009 12:32

Probably typical, but you can't count on anything. DD1 was 41 weeks and a pretty long labour, DD2 was 42+2, but a lovely easy birth.

Olissa · 15/08/2009 16:10

I'm afraid I was:

DC1 42 + 1 induced, 22 hour labour start to finish, ending in emCS... 12 hours 15 minutes classed as 'established' labour

and
DC2 42 + 4 spontaneous VBAC, 13 hours established labour.

So according to the hospital at least, my second was later and took longer. They were both back-to-back which probably accounts a bit for the slowness...

DC3 due January. Think will tell everyone due date is three weeks after it actually is.

Good luck!

MamaMimi · 15/08/2009 23:37

Probably true for me but I'm a bit of an exception to the rule with the whole process.

dd1 was 8 days early

dd2 was 2 wks 5 days early

I'll never really know how long my labours were as I don't feel contractions, was about to be induced with dd1 when it was found I was already 7cm dilated. No urge to push that time either.

But 2nd one probably started with waters going at 8:30 pm and dd2 was born at 2:12 am next morning. Pushing phase, which I was aware of this time, was a couple of contractions that I breathed through which got her out without need to push.

Peridot30 · 15/08/2009 23:48

Baby 1 was 40+10 and labour was 6hrs something
Baby2 wasw 40+11 and labour was slightly shorter!! NOt sure exactly how shorter but think it was around 4hrs.

Both induced

1dilemma · 15/08/2009 23:57

1 day later and much shorter
however the third was completely different again

my midwives tell me it is frequently like this!

Oumasrusks · 17/08/2009 08:17

DD1: 10 hour labour in total, but 3 hours of that was the pushing stage. She was a failed ventouse - forceps delivery and I had a 3rd degree tear.

DD2: 20 hours of contractions, but mostly manageable. Was a very easy birth though, and only 15 minutes of pushing. Only needed gas and air.

thunder2006 · 17/08/2009 11:16

1st baby 36hr labour, drips, every drug on offer, stop, start! 6 days overdue

2nd baby 12hr labour, Pethidine & Gas/air, gel induction 14 days overdue

3rd baby 1hr labour so fast born in living room delivered by paramedics without any pain relief

All vaginal deliveries without any tearing etc.

PinkTulips · 17/08/2009 11:23

dd: 4 days early, 18 hours labour (plus several days of stop start nonsense)

ds1: 2 weeks early, 18 hours labour

ds2: 5 days late, 6 hours labour

go figure....

claireybee · 17/08/2009 11:29

DD 39+6 7 hour labour (2 hours pushing)

DS(2nd child) 40+0 4.5 hrs established labour but had been having on off contractions for 3-4 days. Only 15 mins pushing though

bruffin · 17/08/2009 12:23

Ist induced at 38 weeks 24 hour labour ending in theatre for cs if forceps didn't work

2nd - spntaneous labour at 37 weeks - 4hrs with 20 minutes pushing

cazzybabs · 17/08/2009 12:32

not true in my case...and true to birth dd2 is a lot more awkward than dd1

exasperatedmum · 17/08/2009 14:43

DC1 - 32 hours labour, 2 days late
DC2 - 4 hours labour, 10 days late

maxbear · 17/08/2009 19:59

dd two days late 5 hours established labour, easy birth

ds three days early two hours established labour, fairly easy birth but hurt more as he was a lot heavier with a much bigger head

dc3 will hopefully be two weeks early cos at 17 weeks I am already extremely uncomfortable and hate every minute of being pregnant. Don't care if labour long as long as the baby is early

MinnieMummy · 17/08/2009 20:04

DS approx 18hrs start to finish
DD approx 50hrs start to finish, sorry!!

But then I had a S&S and there is a school of thought that this made for a slower labour...

Was much better though. Second stage two pushes and about 5mins.

StealthBearWipesBumOnDailyMail · 17/08/2009 20:09

glad to see the answer tends to be yes, but strange that so many second babies seem to come later - thought it was the other way round!
I'm due in September and hoping this is the case.

What's an S&S?

Schulte · 17/08/2009 20:31

My second was bang on time (DD1 was 5 days late) but the labour was much worse - she was an undiagnosed breech and I ended up having an emergency CS! So make sure your baby is the right way round

suiledonn · 17/08/2009 20:37

Do NOT convince yourself of this. My dd1 was 3 days early - everyone said it was unusual for a first baby to be early. When I got pregnant with dd2 I thought there was no way I would go overdue the second time round so told everyone I was sure I would go earlier than my due date.
DD2 was a week overdue but by that stage people assumed I was WEEKS over and were driving me insane.

Second labour was a lot quicker though.
DD1 - 4 Hours
DD2 - about 1 1/2 hours

MinnieMummy · 17/08/2009 21:08

Stealthbear - stretch and sweep. Doula thought it started things off, but prematurely, and that if I'd left things be then perhaps the whole thing would have been quicker.

Obviously we'll never know!

Also - DS 5 days overdue, DD 9 days.

Olive11 · 17/08/2009 22:47

DS1 - 38 weeks, 8 hour labour, 1 hour 20 mins of pushing

DD - 36 weeks, induced with gel, 1 hour but never really had to push, she was small and very easy

DS2 - on due date, 1 hour 30 mins and about 15 mins pushing, quick but painfull as much bigger than the 1st two
