Do you have to pee with a nurse in the room after you give birth?.

Is it true that a nurse of Midwife will want to be with you when you pee for the 1st time after giving birth to your baby?( I heard it's to make sure you can actually pee) I can't pee in front of anyone, I have to make sure the door is locked and water is running so no one can hear( I'm a bit shy about peeing for some reason) I know it seems mad considering they will of seen my fanjo having a baby come out of it but tbh I just don't think I could pee in front of anyone. I get stage fright haha.

Any experiences etc?.

They weren't in with me. Although when I had my shower I had to have DP in with me but that was for safety reasons in case I fell. I wouldn't worry about it tbh

No this didn't happen with me but you will very likely feel all wobbly and faint the first time you get up - ie to have a wee or a shower and so the midwife or your DP will need to be there to help you. You really really will not care!!

Also you are unlikely to have much control because your bits will be all numb - took me a couple of weeks to recognise the normal 'need a wee' feeling. (it does come back!)

They weren't with me but I couldn't have cared less as I was bouncing off the walls I was so dizzy. I had one with me another time and honestly you really don't care when you are all over the place. But anyway, if you're like me you are sat there for about 20 mins trying to pee anyway Anyway, if they were with you they would stand probably just outside with door ajar, facing away. I nearly asked one to come into bathroom with me while I bathed but DH came instead.

You really really wont care, you will want clout attention.

But i remember thinking it was weird after my c/s to have someone watch me shower.

It's nice now to think you are just looked after and not left. I would indulge, they know what they are doing, think of yourself as the Queen, she pays people to watch herself piss. Just make sure you ask for cushoned velvet fanjo paper.

Don't worry if you can't pee by the way, I started crying (because you can't go home until you wee) but I was ok in a few hours to let some flow - seems you cannot 'push' it out after birth, you just have to relax and let it come in it's own time But don't worry, I was ok on 2nd attempt

no- but after a c-section they check you are weeing, to make sure you are drinking enough and passing enough fluids- you have to keep your pee in those lovely cardboard 'hats' and hand it into nurse's station- nice!

Eachpeach - I had to do that last time. Had to carry my little wee filled cardboard hat dwn the corridor the the MWs for measuring And note down everything I drank. That was after a catherter, think there was a problem with it, some of my wee went AWOL.

and seriously, after giving birth you wouldn't mind if they watched you doing a pooh either, because they've probably already seen that

i had to do the same in the cardboard thing as they had placed my drip wrongly and i had 5 litres of fluid pumped straight into my body instead of into my vein, but the midwife did come to check if i had a poo after emcs, very embarassing!!

I got dragged out of bed and packed off by the midwife at 7am in the morning, once my epidural had finally worn off and told I had to have a wee even though I didn't want one.

I managed to produce something but the midwife just wanted to know I could do that - she didn't want to watch. Not sure it is standard procedure for them to go with you although they do have alarm bells in case you have trouble.

i think its to make sure you can go and that the op has not damaged or compressed your bladder.

Didn't with me. DH came with me when I had a shower after giving birth to DD, but I got to pee by myself. I am a little like you when it comes to pooing rather than weeing. But after giving birth, I really wouldn't have cared who saw (or heard) any bodily function of mine!

You'll be fine & good luck with the birth!

I had an em cs. Nobody came to watch me pee. I was given a plastic jug and told to note down the volume on a piece of paper myself. I also showered alone a few hours after the op. But, and I stress this, my postnatal care was atrocious. I stood in the shower wobbling, crying and losing clots, wishing dh was there. I only had a shower because they told me I needed to remove my dressing whilst showering or they'd have to pull it off dry.

If it means decent care, I'd accept them watching me do just about anything next time.

After having a baby, you'll be lucky if you can ever hold wee in again.

No one watched me, or wanted to know that I weed either. I had to take myself to the bath and get in and out on my own too (actually my doula ran the bath, and waited outside the door for me as I'd had a PPH and was very wobbly, but the mws didn't care)

They didn't with me and they didn't ask for evidence either. A nurse stood outside the door whilst I had a post emcs shower. They asked me if I had a poo before they would let me go home but again no evidence required.

You honestly won't give a fig after going through birth. I'm really prudish and wouldn't have cared if the entire hospital were watching by that stage. (I have regained some dignity now though)

I wasn't watched after any of my 3 babies births.
Well the first 2 were hospital births. I think I begged MW's to come with me to the toilet because I was petrified of going on my own!

But with all of them I can honestly say, I couldn't have given two hoots what they did or didn't see.

At my last birth (ds4, homebirth) a mw came into my bathroom with me, watched for a bit then turned her back.

I lied because she was annoying me and I wanted her to go home. I probably shouldn't have, but about 2 hours later I hobbled (crawled iirc, whilst dh snored ) down and used the loo fine

I went by myself. It wasnt too bad as I was still numb 'down below' from the anesthetic!

I have never heard of a mw joining you to the loo!

Not that I recall.

Had a bath while they bustled in and out, straight afterwards, but no-one there when I went to the loo.

No. I was asked if I'd had a wee, but they did not require the "evidence". Same thing with having a poo, they wouldn't let me out until I had produced one, but they didn't ask to see it on come into the toilet with me!!

On the post-natal ward you were lucky if you saw a midwife, let alone one who had the time to go to the toilet with you!

I couldn't wee at all during labour - my bladder nearly burst when I was having DS1 because I wouldn't let them catheterise me but I had to give in in the end! It was the same in both my subsequent labours. But I don't remember anyone coming to the loo with me after I had given birth any of the three times. In fact I'm sure no-one did.
