Do you have to pee with a nurse in the room after you give birth?.

Is it true that a nurse of Midwife will want to be with you when you pee for the 1st time after giving birth to your baby?( I heard it's to make sure you can actually pee) I can't pee in front of anyone, I have to make sure the door is locked and water is running so no one can hear( I'm a bit shy about peeing for some reason) I know it seems mad considering they will of seen my fanjo having a baby come out of it but tbh I just don't think I could pee in front of anyone. I get stage fright haha.

Any experiences etc?.

My midwife told me to tell her when I'd had a wee, but didn't come in with me.

Though to be honest, after squeezing a baby out of your fanjo into the waiting arms of your midwife, I think peeing in front of her really won't be a big deal!!

No!. I had a catheter with dd because had an epidural and my peeing ability wasn't scrutinised. Was asked if I had, and that was that.

With ds I was home within a couple of hours and I don't recall being asked.

Ditto with poo. Was asked how things were going (i.e. whether I was) but that was it. Compared with a pee, the first poo was.... interesting.

lol fircone.

I had to use the hat thing too, to hand in my wee for measuring. Unfortunately the midwife hadn't told me soon enough, and I'd just enjoyed a huge wee . . . had to wait several hours before I could produce the required amount again to be allowed to go home. so well done for being so prepared and asking the right questions now.

And very best of luck with the delivery! It's not as bad as everyone makes out. Honest After all, most of us have gone on to do it again

I had an epidural so needed a catheter - when they removed it they gave me a big plastic jug and said I needed to wee into it and then show the midwife. I did that but was told it wasn't enough as they wanted to see a full jug Managed to produce the goods a few hours later after much water drinking. They basically want to ensure you are rehydrating and drinking enough - a woman near my bed was 2 days post-CS and still hadn't filled the jug in one go and they kept telling her to drink more! So I doubt they'll be in there with you but they just want to know you are drinking and weeing enough.

First time was a hospital birth and DP came with me to help me pee and shower afterwards (helps to pee in the shower too)

Second one was a homebirth and I remember getting up for my first pee in the en-suite and shutting the door as I was embarrassed that the MWs would see me pee considering they had just seen everything and wiped my poo up silly really

Third time my friend waited outside the door in case I fell over bless her.

I have never demanded to "see" someone wee! I would ask you when doing a postnatal check if you had managed to. You often get dehydrated in labour so it can take a while to have a full bladder anyway. Added to the bruising and the fact that you may have already emptied your bladder whislt in second stage then I think demanding you produce a wee is a bit harsh . And all this you can't leave until you have weed is poppycock, after all would a midwife sit round all day at a woman's house after a home birth waiting for her to wee, no she would advise her of what to expect, to ring if she had any problems and would visit the next day, same as your community midwife would be doing when you leave hospital.

I had to wee in the shower, with an HCA on the other side of the curtain saying "Have you done a wee love?"

Normally I would have been mortified but I couldn't have cared less at the time.

BigBadMouseInHauntedHouse · 14/10/2008 10:06

With my three they just asked and didn't require any evidence to back it up.

As an aside I have had three epidurals and never had a catheter - for some reason it was the one thing I really put my foot down about at the time. I'd had so many needles stuck in me and I wasn't going to have another ()

i thought i was meant to save my pee in the container they gave me. they laughed though when i showed it to them!

cafebistro · 14/10/2008 20:11

No one came with me when i had my first wee.
No one came with me when i was in advanced stages of labour and the midwife told me I had to have a wee as my bladder was full and it could impede delivery. My DP waited outside the door though...apparently the midwife said, " Make sure she's ok...we've had more than one born down that toilet!"

waitingtobloom · 14/10/2008 20:21

No one checked me - in hospital or at home. Saying that I had a natural third stage and whilst standing up to try and push the placenta out I peed on the midwifes hand. I didnt even realise, she laughed and so did I - didnt care by that point and found it all quite amusing. She also came to the toilet so I could have a wee during labour as she was carrying my gas and air - didnt care then either!

Later found out I actually taught her daughter - really glad I didnt know that beforehand lol

Had catheter at some point during labour and have vague recollections of having to wee before they'd let me go home but can't remember anything about the wee hence it can't have been anything special!!!!
